Yay some updates, im still waiting on the brackets for the zx7 frame to mount the zx10 engine.
Wile i was waiting i thought i would make my carbon parts wile i have the time off, good thing about this is that if i prang the bike i can always make another, here is the seat unit, i preped the seat to 800 sandpaper then apply on the mold releae after a few coats it was time for the flow coat then a layer of matting.

Here is the mold end result, bit of cleaning up before i make a copy, all in all i am really happy with the way it ended up.
In hindsight i would have waxed the seat unit a few more times but it still came out nice.

fuck i'm loving this build. the zx10 motor transplant is perfect. your fibreglass skills are up there. is that what you do for a living or is it just something you've picked up.

Its just something i picked up over time, i best way to learn is by doing it your self and making mistakes i guess, so far i haven't buggered anything up yet haha, most of it has been from images of people using glasswork in different ways and i try and apply that to the bike, i dont have the patience to read through massive tutorials online.

the brackets should be here today, once thing i can say about fiberglass work is that you must take your time and finish each step 100% if one step is left with 50% effort then that will show through later, work is probably where i get my patience from, i hear it all the time when people see what it do.

i really like how you have mounted the gauges in the tank, im considering doing the same thing on mine with the ace-well dash was it hard to do?

mr.zxr

My tank is a aluminium tank and i can't tig weld. I made some tubes and cut the holes for the round guages but EXBEN milled out a bucket for the acewell and welded them all in, then i filed and sanded to make it all pretty again.

i am not 100% happy with them, but they will be painted over in the end anyway.

as for the carbon fiber seat unit, you will want to go over the mold a few times with 180grit, find any bumps or air bubbles in the gel coat and sort them out then sand some more then check it again and spray a guide coat over so you know where you have sanded.

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/20120403_111323.jpg

In between this you will need templates for the first layer of carbon fiber because this is seen, im going to do it in to parts and hide the join within the main edge you will never notice this unless you are looking for it, i have seen it done on many complicated parts and is an industry practice.

What i found worked well was a sheet of baking paper and spray the mold with water and place the paper on like you would the carbon fiber and mark edges that will be cut, make sure you keep the cut line in with the mold edges that way you will have less warp and more uniform carbon as the end result.

Are you planning on making your own Pre Preg ? If your doing carbon fiber for more than just the look its the best way to get good consitant coating on CF (reducing air bubbles/voids) without vaucuum bagging. Especally if your doing a shape with compound curves. Use a slow set catalist so you have lots of working time. Using Vac bagging will reduce your weight by a significant amount and increase CF density. I work with around 30% by weight resin to CF with vac, hand lay up/roller etc its more like 70%. making a 1.3 kg part increase to 1.7kg.

No cameras where I work , not allowed . A green back got reamed the other day for taking picks of a new toy the company I work for is pulling to bits. Started setup at home all will be revealed at NFR if all goes to plan. Atm starting a buisness from home , cryovac almost done, test pieces came out a little retarded . Need a better vacuum pump (old freezer compressor didnt cut the mustard) Need to get down to -25 inchest of merc pump did that fine but doesnt have the flow to keep up with a mould with as many air leak points as a wheel outer.

No use showing shit off , till its right with this project.

No idea, not trained as I keep getting told at work "Your just a Trades Assistant, thats why we pay you shit wages" But its supprising what you can work out for yourself, when the trained people earning twice what I do keep fucking shit up and you end up fixing the mistakes. (hence the grand plan to work from home, plus an hours travel at 110 one way every day is getting a little old) .

Have rubbed sholders with a few peeps over the last 2 years that really know there shit, boat builders now working in CF building mudgards for sexy little trucks using cryo's as big as a lounge was a turn on. 15 kg of plastic put it into orbit and fucked the muddies but only cracked a screen. I wonder how much it would cost to get windscreens obrian to fix a star the size of your palm in 8 inch bullet proof glass ? lol

The stuff I produce gets sprayed hammered and fucked , its not respected. Doesn't have to look to good, my finishing skills are below average but getting better. Most of my projects are ment to be ruff n ready , this one is the best or not at all. Enought of a thread hijack, good luck with the CF Achtung.

You will find that pre preg does not give you the best look, hence the finished name "dry carbon"
Epoxy is generally a slow set on its own, unless your doing bonnets to boats i wont be needing a slower setting catalyst, as for removing air bubbles a simple heat-gun will suffice it will draw the bubbles from the underside, as for the weight difference between the 2 for anyone doing their own fighter project or home job is not going to matter, neither is the bag method. with pre preg you need to heat set it anyway and who is going to fork out for that just to make some cf bits at home.

Im posting up the simplest way to be doing it cost effective so others may follow suite.

To get a nice finished look all you need to do is brush on some epoxy onto the mold 1st and let it sit for 4 hours till the point of tackiness then you can lay up the 1st layer. after that 1st layer it doesn't matter how rough you lay it on because it will never be seen.

For small jobs requiring a nice finish, for a "Dodgie" (job for something other than work related whilst at work) I make pre preg out of scraps using regular room temp setting epoxy with a slow cure . Wet out mould then use pre cut pre preg, layed up with lite rolling. Would work well at home , might not be as good as vac bagged but its close.

yeah thats similar to what im doing, a peice of granite or glass and wet out the carbon sheet, that way you control the fraied edges and cut the template out easy.

I use some 12mm shop front glass on rubber feet (to stop it slipping on work bench) . I've been doing a bit of work using Vectran (special ultra high density crystal polymer, used as sail cloth on racing yacht's) It doesnt wet out very well (is resistant to most chemicals and similar to kevlar in physical propertys but lighter)

I use some painters plastic sheet layed onto a flat bench then a layer of plastic over the top. Then put template over plastic slightly damp with water to make it stick to sandwich (mist with a pump spray bottle). Then cut out using kevlar scissors (serrated for amarid fibers, makes it very easy to cut out complicated shapes with little to no fraying). Wash scissors in acetone !!! (forgot once and made a mess of a $100 set )

Peel of layer of plastic one side and lay up. Would really like to try some of the embossed plastic made for the job as its ment to peel off much better. But from what I have heard it only comes on huge rolls and work doesnt use it.

that motor fit real nice. have you thought how you're going to fit the top rear engine mounting bolt. it looks like it's behind the frame rail or you could use 2 short bolts maybe?

mr.zxr
05-04-2012, 03:28 PM
The other thing is frame bracing. The zxr750 factory kit manual has plates than can be welded onto the inside of the frame up near the steering head and gusets where the frame rails meet the rear cross member. i don't know if it's really required but i did need frame bracing to get through engineering with the turbo setup. Don't let me put you off though cause it looks like you know your shit.

Im going to notch out the other side of the frame, its sits half way off the bottom frame just a half radius should work well, there is only about 13mm in it, i want to try and retain all the standard zx10 engine bolts and spacers, they are either titanium or magnesium, the spacers that is.

As for bracing, i will worry about that if i get a defect notice as its still registered atm, i guess i will need to permit for the motor unless i get crafty with the engine number haha.

Starting to get the shine, i am at 800 grit so far, probably finish it at 1000 and wax it over the next few days, probably 7-8 times with overnight curing. its the most important step of all, if it sticks i have to start all over again. you dont need to bother with pvc release agent because it doesn't leave a nice finish in the work, your better off waxing it over a few days because the wax sets, if you try do all 7 in 1 day your basically just spreading the one layer around.

Some more nice parts to go on the zx7, turns out the r1 wheels i had machined fit the 07gsxr, so i swapped the wheels out, sold the gsxr and now i have a set of nice wheels and brakes for the fighter.
The galfers have the buttons replaced with a lighter set, there was a 50% difference in the 2 weights.

Looks very interesting that does. Get yourself some titanium disc bolts, they make a big saving compared to the OEM or stainless ones. I have titanium M6 engine cover bolts on my new build which weigh in at 83g compared to 202g in stainless. The titanium disc bolts I have weigh 140g for the full set of 15, I haven't weighed the stainless ones or OEM items to see what difference there is. Interesting to see the other one is running carbs instead of the injection system. I'm running TMR40 roller flatslides on my 06' Z750/1000/ZX9R hybrid motor with a Dyna2000 instead of the FI system, which should be ready for me to dyno in a few weeks time.

Fuck Yeah! Looking awesome mate and glad to see this build again. As for the brake calipers V's rotors, can you get 10mm machined off the the caliper mounts at all? Surely this will bring them down to the 310mm you need. Or is 10mm to much?? Im just spit ballin an idea.

Brembo do a 320mm race disc in later K series fitment. If you had the earlier K series wheels it would be a simple matter of using Busa/TL/SRAD 320mm discs, but as the PCD of the K5 onwards discs are different you'll need to go down the aftermarket route. I know for a fact that Brembo offer them, I would imagine AP Lockheed, and possibly PVM may also offer a 320mm disc in late K series fitment.

All that is left to do is mount the dash, brake lines, make the carbon parts and the under bike exhaust.

A shame to break up all the work you have done

From what I see the frame & forks are actually ZXR750 93 - 95, I am after a set of ZX7 (96-03) forks but im sure the forks you have are ZXR750?

What condition is the ZXR750 swingarm in & do you have any pics?

What exactly was done to the R1 swingarm to make it fit the ZXR frame & what rear wheel were you running on it? Will a stock ZXR750 wheel work in the R1 swingarm & what rear shock works with this setup?

Where abouts are you roughly?

Do you have the front wheel the disc's are pictured with? If so, I maybe interested in that at the right price.

How deep is the scratch / gouge on the right side where the muffler has hit?

Also are you keeping the snazzy muffler you made? Did you end up finishing it?

its just some cobweb, it doesn't have any gouges in it, its been sitting under the workbench some time.

if you want you can have that muffler, i will give you the pref tube sound deadening and extra material for $80
cost just that in material alone. you can finish it off just needs pipes inserted and packed then weld shut, i would put it with the belly pan tho because i shaped it to suit that.

im pretty sure they fit k5-k8 range, you will have to google it, or you can run the k7 wheel on the front.

The bike has all sold except the frame, i couldn't just let it sit there so i decided to give it another go, i know this forum is about streetfighters but some may appreciate the custom work involved so i will post it in here.

2007 Kawasaki Moto GP replica, i am working on the fairings at the moment.

Definitely appreciate the work going into it; looks like it'll be mint when its done!

To get the same tank and seat shape you might be able to use a J or K model talk as they cut off lower on the frame?

On the pictures of the old bodywork it looked like you'd shortened the tail unit or is it just my eyes? They still for sale?

I still have the old tail unit with custom frame and under tray. don't think ill be using it, shoot me an offer and i might let it go.
As for the tank i will look into that i might even just cut the sides out to match. i cant get rid of this tank because its been changed to house fuel level sender and fuel pump inside.

After hours of shaping, i am getting somewhere, just the vents to cut and shape, ignore the tank just a stand in, the original one is being modified to match the real bike, also a custom swingarm is being made because i cant find any that are close that will fit the frame.

If the chain side was the same as the brake side i would snap that up, looks close to an R6 swingarm.
