No I don't mean your balls rubbing together when you go commando...

I'm thinking about the next SF project and wanted to build a twin.. but don't know which make to go with so I thought I'd throw this out for a bit of feedback.

Advise on the pro's and con's of the bike and building of SV1000 vs' VTR vs' TL etc would be appreciated. :D

Open to all suggestions Kev. Just want to get some info on peoples experience in building the different twins - so looking for stuff like limitations on build, issues faced, performance of the bike etc.

The buells are nice Kev,but hard to streetfighter, unless its just a custom paintjob!

Side rads on vtr's are a pain unless you get one like what nudie has mounted on the front of his, sv's are gutless compared to the TL the only downfall with the TL's in my book is they need some suspension work to get them to stop trying to kill you but that's just my personal experience

If I was buying a twin, and thank god im not...[:o)]

It would have to be a TL1000S.

Most of the others are fragile, overpriced or underpowered and
the SV is just the soft-option. A lot of folk have spent a lot
of time sorting out the TL's "interesting" side and there's quite
a few ways to fix it.

Yeah, TL1000S unless a real bargain TL1000R came along.

TL1000S had a rotary style rear damper fitted,
the theory was there wasnt room for a conventional
spring/shock behind the motor with the geometry/wheelbase
that Suzuki wanted.

Didnt work well, some folk lived with it, others didn't live for long!
It was know to cause tank slappers and had a few riders off.
The one's I have ridden (stock) were fine but I wasnt pushing them hard.

There are MANY options to convert it back to a more conventional system.

This gave them a bit of a reputation for their "evil" handling
but I wouldnt let it put me off. Most have already been modded.

:D Me likes it too Mate..

Hmmm If I were ever to fighter it, I would do very very simple mods, My favourite bike ever, and the whole reason I love TL1000S's is this bike, Nathan Evans' Purple TLS.. First seen it when I was a learner and loved it since..

All I would do..

*Stock Tail
*Polished this polished that
*Nice Paint
*Nice Pipes
*Twin Dominators <----- ridiculously overdone, but I love em..
*Bling here and there etc..

I had a '99 VTR, wrote it off and a few weeks later bought a '99 TLs.
Being a Suzuki man it is hard to say but the VTR shat on the TL.
The VTR was bloody quick, handled welll and was a dream to ride. The TLs was underpowered (in comparison), snatchy, rattly, bulky and always felt heavy (and I had to get the frame replaced because it broke...). They were both used as commuters with occasional weekend riding and it was easy to ride the VTR anywhere but it always felt like a battle with the TL.

Given the opportunity again I would buy a VTR and fighter it. Slap on a set of USDs and front-mount a rad ala Nudie and it is job done...

Trade still has not been negotiated, but I am sure they will offer bugger all, they may also put it on consignment for me. Selling on Ebay is better for me because someone gets a rego'd TL at a pretty good price and I get cash to throw down on the deal. Just gonna let it ride and see how the week pans out 8)

TLs issues are
somewhat frail gearbox if your a stomper and thrasher.
rear rotary shock is useless, bin it for an bitubo or ohlins.
some have had frames crack.. usually been replaced by now, most were done under recall.
the newer the model the softer they were. 97 model is the pick.
charging system is suspect at best, simple 10min wiring job to correct.

if the above is given attention they are fantastic bikes, i honestly woud have trouble choosing any other bike as a road bike.

vtr's main issues are
weak suspension performance when pushed.
small fuel tank on older models
brakes are ho hum

ive ridden the vtr's a few times love them, again great roadbikes... but no where near as good as the TLs

TLr is fat heavy version of the tls, with a poofteenth more go the then s.

SV 1000
fixed all the above probs of the tl but motor lost some go in the process.....
easy to change, tl cams and a fiddle with the heads and airbox, combined with a tune brings the ponies back,
with more torque to boot.
gearbox issues are sorted
suspension is conventional design, meaning upgrades to late model 3 way adjustable sportbike shocks.
gixxer front ends bolt straight in

for me.... a passion purchase is thr TL a sensible and better choice in the long run is the sv1000

the SV out of the box does all the right things, but with tweaking becomes the best of the lot with ease.

cheers.joe.

Just a quick update. I have been offered a trade this Saturday for my TL and the trade is only a 400.00 short of the minimum I want for the bike. If anyone is genuinely interested from this forum .. they can hit the buy now for 3500 on ebay and mention ASF in an email to me and I will do it for 3K flat. The bike will go into trade Sat if I dont get the $$$ for it and I would rather see it go to someone who is going to love it than the wholesaler. Thats with near new tires and 6 months rego.

chase,
I was going through a similar debacle recently and went for the SV in the end because they're undesirable, this makes them DIRT CHEAP. Simple. The TL is a 20% better sportsbike for 50% more cash because they're a cult bike.
I bought my '06 for $3800 as a near undamaged rep write off with 8700k. As has been pointed out thus far near everything you need off many gixxer models bolts straight on,which I've done. True the stock SV is hardly a pick up line but take it to the pub and get it laid for a carton of the right bolt on factory parts and you'll hose any stock TL.
SV's have a better thought out frame, more sophisticated fuel injection and weigh less. So gixxer the front and rear bung on a straight though system and that's it. Cheaper than a TL of the same condition.
Mines copping a rotrex blower,Dymag wheels and fabricated back end along with the said factory parts.
True enough SV's are shit fuck boring standard but don't take much waking up
