3 reasons i ask this, im sure most members here would be interested in what other people do for a job. you never know, maybe another member near to you has a skill you may be interested in using maybe we have a photographer here and your getting married soon or your doing up your bathroom and need a glazier or maybe you need something delivered from Sydney to Brisbane maybe someone works for a transport firm. the 3rd is employment, ive just helped Myron get a job where i work and they are still looking for more workers. so maybe you have a job vacancy where you work? i just thought if we could provide some sort of database it may be helpful.

I work for ADI(Australian Defence Industries) Ltd. We produce ammunition for the Australian Defence Forces. Anything from small calibre rifle ammo to 2000lb bombs for the air force.
Before anyone asks, no I can not bring bombs home from work, and yes the job does sound alot more exciting than it really is.

This info is fairly usless I know!

10-01-2006, 06:26 PM
So! the Iceman knows how to make bombs! Wanna come down to Cronulla with Rexxie and I mate[?] [}:)]

I'm a geek, programming, databases, and systems analysis, mainly large scale corporate systems. [:I]

Not real fuckin useful unless you want to get into 'project scheduling' for you're next fighter project. [:o)]

Believe it, or not, it actually makes a difference, don't spend as much time waiting for things you didn't take into account, or wasting money on unnecessary bits. :)

There's a lot of very well paid IT work in CBR at the moment if anyone's looking

Fitter/machinist/welder by trade.... years in small shops doin general and engine machining... then had a go at a few years of mechanical engineering but I'm not a theory for theory's sake person...
So got into the mining/construction side of things and ran a workshop/toyshop on the side..

busted my leg in prang and can't stay on it for the hours needed on site so I work part time doin warranty work on gensets and compressors and repairing air tools

and part time in my toyshop ... although i'm just about to step it up a notch and go all legit... do all my own head work and most engine work ... only farm out boring ... got an AC/DC TIG so I can weld most things ... as soon as the gixxer is sold I'm buyin a new lathe and mill... that's why I gotta step it up a notch ... gettin too much outlay for a toyshop and I'm gonna have ta start makin a livin out of it.... hopefully that wont kill ALL the fun

From uni, too many years working long hours for stupidly low money as a Maintenance/Project/Facility Manager in Manufacturing & Construction.

Seven years ago got retrenched and fell into Technical Sales after a year being paid hang out at the beech/cafe streets & ride a vespa scooter with advertising trailer.

Spent the last 5 years attending company funded junkets, lunching & drinking lattes/beer (err sorry that should be "selling really expensive equipment that puts black shit on white shit"). Pay for what I actually do is very happy. As an aside, how's this for what a wonderful place I work - in November the company bought both me and LSG a $850 Rossi replica AGV TiTech each as a thankyou for the 4 months I spent commuting Melb-Perth to help them out during the year.

As of Monday, I'm a "Indirect Channel Manager" - not sure what this really means yet but I think I now nag other people in country Tas, WA, NT & QLD into "selling really expensive equipment that puts black shit on white shit".

It's a tough life....

Well you lot appear pretty bloody busy.
I am a "luthier" for want of a shorter, more accurate job description.:D
I repair stringed musical instruments, usually guitars, but have repaired double basses, to violins, to bazukis. I also repair guitar amps, and general audio related equipment.
When I'm not doing that, I play in a rythym and blues band as a guitarist, or tutor would-be guitarists at a local music school.
When I'm not doing that lot, I'll repair your paint job, service your car,or rebuild a bike.
I've had a lot of jobs over the years, but guitars and bikes seem to be the main themes.:)

Ah. I didn't know it was a work history thing. In that case I was a gerneral shit kicker in many factories, but managed to pick up a few skills as an upholsterer (but that was many years ago and we have Brett for that now so don't ask). Then I got my arse into gear and got to college as a mature student (well aparently that's what you are when you're 21) and followed my first love, guitars. (Benzine reminded me). I then did a bit of session work at a local studio, became a sound engineer, which then moved onto music videos where I then became a cameraman and eventually assistant director on mainly shite low budget crap back in England (like shit with the "Gladiators", fuck that was bollox). Somewhere in between all of those contracts I helped a mate out in the parts department of his Kawasaki dealership. Then I came to Aus and had to start scratch. Won't bore you any more, ended up being a graphic designer. How's it happen?

I run my own business mate. It's all up to what you want to acheive I guess. You'll end up doing a lot more work though, but at least you get the satisfaction of knowing you're doing it for yourself. As Chalky says, look into a gov grant to start up, but you will have to make a projection of your first year to show it's viable. I didn't do this or do get a grant, I just went the hard way and built slowly but surely. Still just ticking over, but that's all I ever wanted.

I sell industrial vacuum pumps. If anyone who does vacuum forming needs anything vacuum related, give me a call. We also sell vacuum pumps for applications ranging from pneumatic conveying through to oddball applications like removing starch from corn & supplying vacuum to the machine which puts the tiny holes in cigarettes - and everything in between.

Foxy
13-01-2006, 04:05 PM
Hey Popcorn. We do a fair bit of vac forming and are relocating hopefully mid year which means we may be upgrading so I'll let you know.

I am a designer.......I say that 'cause I started as a graphic designer and ended up an industrial designer and a graphic artist ......and get me on the piss and I become a bullshit artist (also a qualified signwriter).

I work in the sign industry and design and manufacture everything from digital printing to CMC files to pylons tooling and anything else sign related. Good fun cause everything is designed and made inhouse so I have heaps of toys to play with as well as work next to a scrap metal joint.

I started as a film planner in printing before computers took my job away so went on to general printing shit like guillotine, platemaking, running a couple of old Heidlebergs and envelope printers before scoring what I thought would be my dream job for a tree lopping mob where I raced around Sydney on a motorbike checking trees and powerlines. They got rid of the position after a fortnight...bastards.Back in printing now learning CTP but spending lots of time driving around Syd doing deliveries.Other items on the resume would be:Postman, roller of 44 gallon drums of oil into containers, lawnmower, builders labourer, housewasher, tennis court cleaner, vacuum former, party hire delivery driver, forklift driver, postie again, office accounts wannabe (lasted 2 days in an office),full time stay at home Dad (2 years) but at least I've never drawn the dole.Hopefully, if all goes well at the next grading and I don't get flogged I'll be able to become a MA instructor and start teaching kids.Oh yeah...also streetfighter builder in my dreams.

Rod,you've worked for Stegbar for 14 years(14 FUCKING YEARS).Thats one sad story.I'm in the trade mate and i've been a sub contractor for them installing all their shit that was too hard for them to handle and i've never come across such a poor quality, over rated product as what those cunts turn out.Award winning quality my arse.I was fitting a frameless baluastrade and pool fence for a customer today who'd used them for his showers and robes, when i asked him where the rest of his shower screen was he said"It fell apart and blew up,and the robes were insalled with broken mirrors". Bet ya glad ya got outa that circus mate[:o)]

But oddly enough many of us used to be die hard Kawasaki men. Like many, I got sick of the piss poor service and lack of actual spares at my local dealers. As my bikes have been my only transport up til recent years it creates great difficulty when they have to order spares like brake pads , clutch cables and such in when Suzuki stock them over the counter(for Kawasaki). It's a shame as they are nice bikes. Less hasssle, easy parts availability , ease of maintenance and good customer service from the dealers it's little wonder people are turning to Suzuki & Honda for their next bikes instead of another Kwaka....
