View Full Version : Fitting a steering damper ?

I picked up a new adjustable steering damper from a local bike shop going cheap. No fitting kit and no instructions, just the damper.

What are the general rules / guidelines with dampers?
Its got to bolt to the steel tubular frame somewhere and maybe realistically the underside of the bottom yoke.

Its looks tight to get it in and establish the correct angles, reach, clearance etc.

ive recently researched the topic Colin and wat i found out was: it should be fitted just about perpendicular to the forks and parallel or a tad trapeze to the bike's longitudinal axis
you'll have to work out front mounting bracket below or above the bottom yoke with apro 60-80mm center to center distance /forks tube to dampeners mounting bolt/ or straight to the bottom yoke side /the decision i dont actually like/ and the rear mounting bracket located so as to allow the same turning angle to the left and right without hitting at any part of bikes or riders body when turning, both bolts should be located in the same plane vertically
hopefully it makes sense or i'll make a sketch on monday - my cameras left in my work

How long is it? the stroke length will determine how the damper is mounted, generally a long 150mm+ stroke can be fitted to mount off a braket on the frame and a clamp round the fork leg. A shorter 60mm stroke will usually be mounted 916 style across behind the top yoke, or onto the front of the headstock and fork leg like the GSXR K series fitment.

I`ll check the length of stroke and come back...

I dont want to have the bottom yoke full o holes while I try and find the best position. ;)

The full stroke length is 90mm or 9cm.

I have had a bit of experience with these and I find the best option is to bin it and grow some nuts muppet arms.

On the other hand I was fucking glad I had a White Power damper
on my old GSXR1100M with the way it slapped like fuck overtaking.
