Well after much pondering and patience I finally found a great TLS.. I thought hey gotta get Pete to paint the R1 (Soon Pete - Hopefully), orrr buy My favourite twin in the world, despite there widowmaker rep and the wacked out rear rotary dampner I love em..

So with the worlds most awesome Missus.. and despite having the R1 Fighter (http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=18028) project still in progress (when aren't they) and the XR Motard (http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17339) taking up the other side of the shed.. Mrs Gitzy (http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr292/Gitzy84/attachment-27.jpg) pushed me to buy a TL before we tie the knot and start procreating Little Gitzys.. So one not to argue I said sure sweetie I'll buy one lol..

So I picked her up today..

1997 Black TL1000S
15800kms
Log Book History
Immaculate Condition
Stock as a rock except for Magnum Carbon Pipes (Got Stock pipes to)
Couldn't ask for more than that..

Not Sure If I'll fighter it [B)], I love the bulbous fairing heaps, always have.. maybe just a little bling here and there not sure, just give it some good rides at the moment.. I'll keep ya'll in the loop anyway..

If anyone has any info I haven't already thoroughly researched on these things feel free to inform me.. Didn't you use to have one Crazymofo??

nice buy gitzy , my mate chrimsey whos on here sometimes has a 97 model too , have had the pleasure of riding it a few times and they are a hoot thats for sure , brenton has owed it for years i know he has done the clutch a few times and put a million k's on the clock and hes never had a problem with it other than the big twin loves to eat rear tyres

Gitzy

Cheers Guys..

Quiet Pete don't temp me lol..

Mrs Gitzy rocks Sko..

Def Dan should be fun, gotta learn how to ride it first.. its soooo weird I've only ever had 4's

I'm happy as Scotty, I've read a whole lot bout the 97 models being a little problematic but I'm looking forward to many kms of fun..

Nice bike Gitzy. Always liked the look and sound of the TL so rode a demo one in 97/98. Great torquey motor and brakes but the steering was a bit strange. For some reason it was running about 2 metres wider through the corners than my ZX9.

my mate had a tl just like that one it was a 97 and after 40000klms she went boom due to an oil flow prob

Lol Love you too Joe.. Soooo I think I'll need some Salter Engineering Rad guards me thinks..

As tempted as I am to fighter it lads I'm thinking something along the lines of Des's blingy TL.. nice and clean..

Hmmmm the rate I ride Rod if thats the case i got 25000kms before she goes pop which is about 10 years for me.. lol.. seriously though I hope that doesn't happen hey..

hey gitzy chrimseys one has done over 60k and he rides the bastard hard and its still held together , im not sure if its true or not but the early ones aparently were more agro than the rest , maybe the later ones were detuned to preserve them maybe

crazymofo
12-02-2011, 10:28 PM
the 97 was the full power one, i had one and loved it. only problem i found was the glass gearbox.... i stripped 4th gear dogs doing a trackday.

i still regret getting rid of it. if i ever return back to road riding, im buying one.

late model front ends bolt in easy as pie, id seriously reccomend an ohlins rear shock and an after market steering damper. once the ohlins is on the rear, it'll be a brilliant bike. mine had one, and i still regard it as one of the best bikes ive ridden. so stable, so fast, yet did it so easy.

i want one, but i dont want to track it, and i dont want to road ride any more, so i get that gutted feeling everytime i look at one. it is by far my favorite roadbike of all.
and im the same, dont streetfighter it, they look fucking awesome with the half faired imo.

they are not without their faults tho (theres quite a few) check under the seat cowl/pillion seat for silver stickers to show what recalls it had completed, it should have 3 (if it doesnt it doesnt mean the bike hasnt had it either) one recall was a ecu remap to dumb it down, fortunately mine never got that one lol, another recall was to retrofit the steering damper.

go to tlzone.net and be prepared to give up all your time and money to the tl gods, you'll be rewarded with the best road bike one could own.

oh and todd, your still a cunt [:P]

cheers.joe.

Lol.. peer pressure may kick in guys, especially with the missus hounding me to fighter it..

Cheers for the Info Joe, I just checked I have no stickers, tool kit but no stickers.. Buuut I have some thoughts, date of manufacture is DEC 97, Rego Papers say 1997 Model, but 2 things, the log books have no recall notification, and the steering dampner bracket is 2 pieces. from what I have read on TLZONE the Recall 97 brackets were one piece and the 98 onwards were two piece.. indicating maybe mine is a 98 Model maybe??

My 09 Street Triple R was manufactured in 08 labeled 08 but was released an 09 Model as thats when they came out..

Can anyone shed light on this.. I'm only going on the bracket and no recall stickers theory in guessing its a 98..

Dec 97 build would usually be a 98 model going off new year models arriving late in the old year.(if thatmakes any sense)

nice bike btw Todd

Cheers Lads.. I'll be putting a new front tyre on tomozzo, rear one is spankers front one is shot, although I think its original.. while I'm at it I'll put some new spark plugs in and fresh fluids and filters me thinks.

Took bagster tank cover off today revealing a very clean fuel tank that hadn't seen light of day for prob 10 years.. lifted tank up and checked air filter, could do with a blow out but I may aswell get a K&N or BMC or other.. very very clean engine, its so tidy, I'm enjoying playing with something unmolested for once..

I think I'll get some KMs under my belt before I judge the rear rotary setup, but everyone who has ever recommended an Ohlins or Bitubo can't be wrong.. so I'll start saving now me thinks..

Gave her a bit of a tub today seen as though it wasn't raining finally.. This thing is in exceptional condition after a lot closer inspection. I really can't fault it, other than the mishap with the standard gigantic blinker (bugger, was going to change anyway) and the magnum pipes need a little polish on the stainless section it really is in impeccable condition for a bike that is nearly 14 years old.

95% of bolts are untouched and not corroded.. It even has the white paint on most of the fasteners, all the warning stickers are still there, the paint is still in great condition, the decals have a little residue around them but I'll clean around them tomorrow, There isn't a single stone chip or other on the forks, the chrome or the fender and the screen has no fading/hazing/yellowness, barely even a fin out of place on the radiator..

So Far..

Did Oil & Filter Change
New Front Tyre
Spark Plugs
Wheel Bearings and Seals (didn't need doing but I had got em free from work so I thought why not..)
New Brake Pads

Done a couple of hundred KMs today, everything is so tight and smooth it almost feels new, Purrs like a kitten and pulls like a 14 year old..

I was looking at the AFR list the other day and it looks like I'm the only one going from Sydenee. I thought I'd get lonely, but if you central coasters/Newy riders are planning to meet at Windsor, we should have a good run up to Bathurst. Maybe if he head to Lithgow then out through Oberon or Jenolan Caves Rd

Nice Gitzy, they will sound great and what a good price.

That bastard code enticed me to BGW also to give the credit card a nudge. It never ends :)

Make sure you cure that stuff the right way mate, otherwise it will blister and chip off real easy. Also best to start from bare metal and remove what ever coating is on the stock headers.

Aarrrghh Luke I've been thinking about coating them since your last post ya bastard ;) and there is a Coating Place like 20 mins away, so I'm tempted. Two things are stopping me, first the headers on the TL literally come off in 5 mins so there is no trouble if I change my mind after I paint, and second I got the R1 pipes sand blasted ($20) and painted them VHT Black ($20) and followed the curing to the letter and its some seriously durable stuff.. done prob 6000kms a NFR & an AFR and there is not one blemish on them... Hmm what to do, well the pipes are off and sitting in shed so I think I'll email this coating mob and see what I'd be up for before I decide :D

I can tell you now, that if its over $250 for the proper job, its to much. But if you have had success with the VHT, do it again. Mine on the GSXR is still going well and looking like new still. Just a shame Ive got to do it all again soon.

Finally got around to fitting the pipes, I also stripped the headers and gave them a freshen up with some good ol VHT Flameproof..

These things are LOUD, I put the baffles in to quiet them down a little, but I'll prob take em out again.
