View Full Version : Handlebar Dilemma :( Advice Needed

Hey guys, got my Renthal bars and risers from B & C Express the other day, wnet out this morning to put them on and the risers aren't tall enough to clear my forks coming through my tope yoke.
My risers have an offset bnolt hole so I thought could I possibly do this ( photo below ). Have my bars mounted in front of where my forks come through, it'd mean a tiny bit of the riser wouldn't be on the top yoke, but the bolt hole would be in a fairly meaty area of it. Or should I just buy new risers that will bring me up over my forks...
I wanted to mount the bars upside down and the sweep coming in towards me, putting them in a similar position to the clip ons.

Can you modify your raisers so they come back on an angle then your bars sit behind the forks not above them. Exben did mine for me as you can see in the above photo.

Have a look at any dirt bike shop near you, there should be raisers of all shapes and sizes, also there are add on parts to make them taller and to tilt them back or forwards varying degrees.
Most have a single hole mount into the triple clamp, the duel hole mounts are next to impossible to find!

Or pull the forks down to suit?

If you did that wouldn't it change the rake and trail affecting the bike's handling?

Yeah, but your not racing Stoner at the weekend.
I'm guessing your building a weapon to act like a spastic on it?
Putting the bars on will affect the handling anyway, but your body position is adjustable to accommodate that.
If your going to pull them down find a mate to help as you as you will have to hoist the front end of the bike up to allow the forks to slide down. I used a rope and the carport roof the last time. Unless you have a front stand that uses the frame as the lifting point.

sorry mate id be very carefull with this type of move from exp
i can tell u even small amounts can make a big change in this case slow the stering down but u prob knew that
more to the piont it is a compermise to the handling of the bike
that can be easly over come by other methods so y should he put himself in the same leage as 300 rear tyres and huge rakes(aka choppers)
where how good the bike rides comes second to how good they think it looks as they ride past their pofter mates
just my 2 cents

Yeah, no worries ozzy. Of course we want the best for our bikes and the more you put in the more you get out. But sometimes there is going to be a compromise when we fiddle with the original design. Depends on what our friend is looking for? He may be just doing it for "the looks?" He may want to put a set of bars on and not want to replace brake lines, throttle cables etc
Good luck with the build rod. Whats your plans anyway? Is she a Gixxer?

Its not a compromise its what he want's, thats the point of building a bike instead of buying one.
If he wants the bars over the handle bars by raising the front he will need to raise the rear to correct the handeling but will have a slightly highter CG this is not always a negative depending on rider weight etc.
My personal choice would be to make my own, or if you dont have the facititys (drill press if your really doing a back yard job) pay someone to make them. And or just get some taller ones out there and modd them if needed. I found really tall ones for betty as I wanted a very upright seat position even had twin bolts, instead of a single.

fair pionts boys
but sorry red its not what he was asking to do it was some thing that lee pionted out
but yes u are right build it like u want etc .....
and yes lee u are right as well
but in my and i say my apinion its a shit option that i would only use as a last resort
and to be onest if he just went ahead and offset the mounting like he first asked and most
of the riser was on the yoke and it didnt compermise the monting he wouldnt have a prob and it would be by far the easiest to do
so like i said in my opinion he should just do what he 1st asked .

Agreed Ozzy, I didnt make it to clear in my previous post (not good in my brain at that time in the morning). I would mount the bars behind the fork tubes, if not for anything else just the conveniance of being able to move them up or down if needed.

"Just" putting a set of bars on can be a stinker of a job. No matter how many times you've done it but for me a streetfighter aint a streetfighter without the obligatory Renthals.
Take your time Josh, Its hard to do a tidy job. The fairing hides alot of crap.
Just before your first test ride be dam sure the cables have enough slack and are in a position where you can steer the bloody thing without the new bars pulling on the throttle when they are turned.
Study the route of the cable making sure it cant snag on anything!
Oh, and a test ride starts at walking pace with your gear on. To the top of the street and back. Not with your mates going a run in the hills.
Keep her Lit!
Good Luck again Rod!

i did exactly what red said ,i used a k9 rear shock to raise the rear of the bike after raising the front 4inches,to fit the risers n flat bars,no handling problems at all,http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/188949_1580529965334_1598225439_31189251_4789225_n .jpg

If that is the only reason for buying the K9 shock Pete you waisted your money, as Ozzy said and I've been hinting at, all you have to do is off set your raisers so the bars sit behind the fork tubes.

Going cheap, I haven't rode on the roads in a long time.

Hey Lee, that mob you use for the photos don't want people linking to them that's why they wouldn't load. I had to fuck around a lot to get them. Maybe use another photo host mate?
Also, it's says you're from Aus in your profile but they are very English looking photos mate!

Cheers for your time.
Your good! Are you FBI? Was it the chimneys that gave it away?
The GPZed is in Sunny Ireland. I've been living in Seaford since 04.
I've been lurking on here for a while. Mainly on the classifieds. Thats where I found the Gixxer I think? Or was it Ebay? Anyway the previous owner was Docktor he used to post alot on here.

Ah, Doc's old bike. I remember. Yea mate, the chimneys.... or was it that i was brought up in the UK and it looked like my old street?
That old Zed's pretty radical mate. Whatever happened to her?

Cheers, She's still lying in my parents garage!
I left with the intention of posting it over but as time went by my interest died down. I'm off back home on a working hol in June (TT!)and might just see if I can sell it. Its a sin just having it sit there. I was a Streetfighter nut back then but have moved on to different bike interests.
