albi, i used a heavy cleaner i got from my old work, its the best degreaser iv ever seen, that and a toothbrush, then i just used normal prepsolve, etch primer, pant and clear is 2:1.

i did not bother rubbing the primer back either.

then two coats of white and 2 coats of colour, then 2 thick coats for clear, but another thicker coat on the leading side of the engine.

had to do a bit of stuffing round with the rearset spacers so the rear brake master would clear the swinger, go it sorted though. i had to space the right side out 10mm further than the left, but the left had been moved out 10mm anyway as a result of the chain releaving work on the frame so now they are even anyway.

i also have to mount the m/cylinder on the outside of the bracket, ill cut a few hex heads short and screw them in from the outside to dress the holes up a bit

you can see the spacer between the brake lever and the bracket

wat brand rearsets are they ? speedking?
ive never painted an engine in 2k would have thought a solid is the best?
have you ever had probs with cob on engines beofore ?

chopiesel
13-01-2011, 09:14 AM
iv painted heaps of car engines with 2k over the years both metalics and solids and never had a prob.

the reasets i got from ratedr 4 years ago, just a generic design but the brackets are thicker/stronger than the really cheap thai ones you can get from ebay.

gitz over time it might flake off, i painted my gemini motor like this years ago and the same rubbers for the cam bolts lasted 5 years without coming off till i sold the car.

if i have to undo any ill just cut around them with a blade first.

the front sprocket is just sitting there, its just the standard one, it basically sits flush with the end of the shaft (5/8 offset)
the front sprocket would normally be covered by a standard frame.

goto figure something out for the rear brake support, the stockers have a bar that runs from the caliper to a mount forward on the swingarm,

im thinking of getting some 20mm round bar and putting rose joints in each end and mounting it to the caliper then on the inside of the swinger, that way i can adjust it as i lengthen or reduce the wheelbase.

anyone see any probs with my idea???

i had it drawn up by an engineer today,

chop, could you modify the brake caliper carrier to not be able to rotate, horizontal bolts or something (or weld it to the swingarm)?
its not like its a super-high performance build so a little rear brake squat wont be too much compromise

the other thing i was thinking of doing was bolting an alloy block the the carrier that would sit up against the under side of the adjuster block, and would just slide back and forth as i adjust the wheel, the only prob i could see was there wasnt much "meat" in the carrier where i would have to bolt it. welding is another option though.

ALBI
14-01-2011, 07:14 AM
the same as an fireblade would do! it uses a alloy block on the inside of the swinger

chopiesel
19-01-2011, 01:09 PM
iv always known them to be called nutserts. i usually get them from wurth but im pretty most god metal centres have them. is there a good nut and bolt supplier down the coast?

wasn't there another fat tyre TL being built on here ages ago?

what prep do you do on the moteur before paint?

fuck that's shiney!!

fimpBIKES
19-01-2011, 09:37 PM
chop, you can always get the nutsert tack-welded in one or two places
probably wont get too many vibes out there though

MDM
19-01-2011, 10:21 PM
I'd be a bit uncertain about using a nutsert for the torque arm.... would rather have a welded-in threaded boss for security. Wouldn't want the nutsert coming loose and have the tporque arm flapping around and jamming in your spokes...

Dynomutt
20-01-2011, 02:31 AM
I'm with MDM here, a nutsert would be unsuitable for the forces involved with a torque arm. Get a proper threaded boss welded in, the ally the nutsert sits in is only going to be around 3mm thick, the torque arm exherts a lot of force trying to stop the caliper rotating with the disc when the brake is applied. I would not use a nutsert myself nor reccommend it to one of my customers in this particular application. Nutserts are predominantly used in lower stress applications, mounting chainguards and huggers etc, and smaller non safety critical components.

The only issue I can see is the staggered pinch bolts, you may have trouble getting them both to stay tight. Personally I'd have the bolts inline, and narrow the pinch area

i thought about that, i thought 1 could always just have the set of three as short dummy bolts and move them to the outside if i really wanted to have two rows, also the pinch area from the base of the recess to the gap is about the same as standard

The main prob with polished alloys is if you don't use the right clear (pqr15 I think it's called) it will turn yellowish after a while especially with heat

Nice work in Inventor. I've never been much for precision but work in 3DS Max. Still, Autodesk make some nice products.
Also liking option btw ;)
