I need a program to rip and burn dual layer dvd's.

It needs to be simple to use and ignore copy protection so I can back up the dvd's I got for Christmas. Otherwise my darling children will have them destroyed in a matter of weeks.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Oh and free is good too! :D

Here we go with a free version, does heaps of shit, will make 1 to 1 image (ISO) of Dual Layer DVD no loss of quality

I have downloaded all my DVDs to my hard drive using Bit Ripper and just use Nero to burn to a DVD from there. I can put them through my TV using a media player. Copyright, what copyright.
http://www.bitripper.com/ Its free and easy to use.[8D]

As far as I'm aware encryption hasn't changed on DVD's

Yes, it has, dvddecrypter will work on about half of the latest ones, dvdfabdecrypter is pretty much the same thing, but is updated regularly to cover the new encryption routines.

This is the best for a simple solution.

Will that give you an image that can be burnt to disc ?

I like dvddecrypto cos the burning part is included and accessible from the one interface......

Mind you this discussion is purely academic

How much are dual layer blank dvds?

Picked em up for $2ea at Wow sight and sound.

Cheap enough when <s>Blockbuster has cheap movies</s> My kids don't look after stuff no matter how much trouble they get into. It's cheap insurance against having to buy new dvd's.

Seems my issue is the burner itself. Brand fucken new and won't burn on my laptop or the old man's desktop. Won't even burn using the software that came with it.

Oh well back I go for a refund and different brand.

Any recommendations? I'm using an external one so anyone got brands they have that have worked for them?

I use an LG external burner and never had a problem with it in 4 years. Had a few different name brand internal burners in the last 12 years and all worked well. You were probably unlucky with this one.

Anything but Sony will do.

I've been told that external burners are notoriously unreliable when it comes to programs such as DVDshirnk and DVDfab, YMMV.

Is there a reason you cannot use the old mans desktop (with an internal burner) to burn your DVDs?

Just that he's a half an hour drive from me and can be a pain in the ass depending on his mood on the day.

I'd rather just buy a new laptop with an internal DL burner and be done with it! Saves having to deal with his changing moods. Worse than a Pre Menstrual woman.

ROFL I'm hearing ya mate!

Does your laptop have a TV out? Or alternatively, does your TV have a monitor in? I've been running my TV as a secondary monitor for years now and don't bother burning DVDs anymore. If I want to watch my legally stored home movies etc I just keep them all on the HDD and play them directly through the TV.

If you've already got the equipment to do the job then an external HDD is a cheap solution.

My tv does have the option to become a monitor. The Mrs cracks everytime I hook up the 52inch and use it as a monitor. I don't see the hassle myself. And tbh I hadn't thought of the external HD for storage option. considering 2TB is about $140 its probably the easy option.

The big screen does make for good watching when VLC player is in full screen mode though..

52 inch? It must be a pretty modern TV then, check and see if it has USB input. If it does then all your problems can be solved with an external HDD as it will plug straight into the PC for transfer, and then into the telly for viewing.

It has a HDMI input so I run the PC on it and use it as a monitor.

So I can do it that way. Just need to get me an external HDD and rip everything on to it.
