k boys and girls this is the build of my wife emily's zr zephyr 550
she has been rideing for over 5 yrs but as she is lets just say short(shut up sharky lol)
most of that time was on her hated but low vt 750 shadow
one day i was doing some work for the bloke that did her q ride
he was back doing bus driveing and didnt need his old 550 (read shaged from learners)
for my work i took home a bike for her 2 rebuild.. she has allways been onto me to let her build a car
so i said y not a bike ...gee y not she said she loves old sckool mussel cars and bikes so the look of the 550
is to her likeing and she has allways had a soft spot for them after learning on one
well as most things i do they never get started and wife was getting the shits rideing from ispwich to west end (45 min)
on the shadow . we went out and paid 2700 for a stocker and i mean stock 45 k on the clock for a 91 zr 550
i had some parts put aside for her more work for parts thanks russ but still no go as we waiting for power to the shed
well long story short well shorter russ was moveing back to bisbane something about ipswich people smelling....
and being the lazy fucker he is he kindly left a fixed bike stand here at my place.. that is all it took bike on stand
wife out in the shed at night by leed lights telling me to keep my hands of her bike she is doing it lol
we are well into our first stage mock up

this is the stocker as she is rideing it

emily has what u could call some atitude well she has softern after or son was bone but still lol
so the breff was simply old sckool looks, short and tuff
1st part have wife strip front and back off

then machine swing arm to fit(as posted in tec setion) grind and file some clearance for back of motor

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/1290596969.jpg

she had to chose between the zx6r conven forks 2002 or the 750 93 gsxr usd that where for mine(told she could have them and busa brake if i was allowed radial lol)
she took the usd ,the rims are off a 95 gsxr 1100 put it all together for a idea and smile with a beer in our hands
she is very happy twith the way its going but emily has made it clear what she likes lol
but how could u not get a giggle out of seeing a bike go from a 4" rim to a 5.5

all up with coct of bike and parts we should be around 5 grand unless she does something silly like want the gpz 610 kit in it
not bad value i think for the bigest tyred 550 i have found on net(some 1 else prob done it but i havnt found)

Good work so far Lynton, I 'specially like the swingarm narrowing tool - simple but 100% effective.
What colour is it gunna be?

mle has been looking at that, she is farly shore that red panel and black rims with red rim strip
and most else blacked out, makes it a bit more work because i was tring just to swap parts from shiter
to runner but i have to say i think she is right. the tool got a hard work out on other side its x2 the wall thinkness
as one shown, a bit of chatter happened but played with load and speed and it came good...
thanks 2 rod and others i have been so long not building i had forgoten how much i loved it lol
it really should work for her she is only 5 foot tall and on the zephyr looks like a much bigger bike
im really happy with the way the proportion of hight, bike and tyre are working well and u dont realise how small a bike it is till u have a closer look .we have had a 190 tyre just sitting in there and if i really pushed could make it work
but the 180 fits well makes it easy should still handel well and looks the part without being silly so it got the nod.

Nice one Lynton! I take it u got plenty of chain room around the frame with the wider wheel yeh? How much of an offset sprocket do u think u will need?

hey fella i had a thread some were /see your bike jack; i made them welded together so you wind up both jacks together

ozzy1100
25-11-2010, 07:19 AM
thanks lance there is a lot more than i thought there would be
i might just be able to turn the standard back to frount gains about 3 mm
or a gpz 750 turbo one has a offsset in it or make one but there is enough
clearance on frame to use the 530 chain off rim or keep 520 stanrd it was something i looked at before i started
but ill have 2 wait till i rmake the collet inside the arm pivit to the 18 mm bar of 550 as it is still 20 id from the zrx 1100
at the moment it is dummy up. i could just drill out the frame to 20 so i could use the zrx bar but id like to leave frame as standard
as i can. when its solid and i cheek centered ill aline the chain(still going to be a shit load of rim drive tho lol)

yer pete that is where i got the idea from but i left them because by useing 4 i can adjust in diff planes
ie i can put a didgy level on the frame side ways and get a datum of zero then set up others if needed
it alows me to roll the frame to where i want it ..... oh that and im lazy i just screwed them to the stand and zip tied to the frame when i build my lifting stand out of the 12 mm plate i have here ill do the same but with screww jacks and i can just weld them where they need to be.

btw a big thank u to russ over this , it was his job that scored me the parts
that insired the look, the stand he gave us and with beer in his hand all his shit over when we would start
oh that and not getting to upset every time i tell him to move something on his gay mobile......

up date . this bike has just been sitting there looking tuff till i got the lathe up and running so nothing happened to it really .

but we are make head way , some nice new shiney things

http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n493/ozzy1100/001448x600.jpg

and changed to a gell bat for her rider that all the bits are going on to

http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n493/ozzy1100/lyntonsiphone029448x600-1.jpg

when i get a chance ill get emily to pull of the whole back end and we can start makeing bushes and such so we can bolt up prop allso when i orderr the 7075 ally for my head stem i happen to order a meter lol so ill make a ally stem for her front end as well prob wont make it adjustable like im thinking on mine..

thanks boys picked up head stem bearings yesterday for this one so ill draw up the new stem
i wasnt going to make it adjustable for offset and rake but i think ill have a look at how ill do it on this one
while i wait for bearings for my 1100

ozzy1100
07-08-2011, 03:48 PM
ok so have been given some shed credits over the weekend
drew up the new stem and made it out of 7075 (fuck its light even solid)
made a dust cover for bottom bearing
the top yoke washer and bolt
and a front stand adaptor(didnt want to drill the ally stem out to over 16 mm) that fits into the recess i left in stem
nothing that isnt that easy or that new but gives a smile on my face

http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n493/ozzy1100/lyntonsiphone006600x448.jpg

http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n493/ozzy1100/lyntonsiphone020448x600.jpg

http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n493/ozzy1100/lyntonsiphone017448x600.jpg

and incase any 1 noticed the bottom bearning isnt tight i ground out the old one so it would just slide onto stem so i could bolt it all up and make shore it worked.

ozzy1100
08-08-2011, 03:37 PM
ok so work has been shit and means fuck all money lol but on the up side no one home to stop me in the shed lol i mean i should do the dish's or vac the floor but did the right thing and striped the swing arm of mle,s bike lol
had a look at what spacers and bushed i need to make to fit arm to the frame and looks like i dont have a 16 mm drill so that can wait.
in the mean time started to look at how i will center the rim etc
simple plum bob spun up on the new toy just need to make a plug for the old stem and use it to hang the plum bob line the two up and i have a center line sweet.
i have no idea how this sort of thing is done norm as this is the 1st i have done but makes the most sense.

hmmm.. interesting... im liking the way you have done it, but one thing tho.. whats to say the swingarm pivot is centered on the frames center line? a few bikes come out with an offset swingarm (R1's come to mind) for various clearance issues, so i would cross reference the swingarm pivot center line by, dopping the plumb bob down from the inside faces of the foot peg mounts marking where they hit the board, measureing between the 2 points, half way and seeing if it matches with the line you have now.

great work so far... i wish i had a lathe....soon. soon i will ;)

cheers.joe.

ozzy1100
09-08-2011, 11:34 PM
Lack of lathe not hurting yr style mate sweet as but fuck u will love it lol
And yer yr right Joe , i have thought same thing
It's prob fine on a frame like this one but I'll still check center but also thought
That I'll check square as well by triangulating center line at bench off stem
to points equal distance out side frame along bar running through pivot
Like I said this is the first chassy changes I have ever done so I'm just
working though ways I thing will work easy but on a engineering
level be sound. If I was checking head stem alinement as well I think
I would make a bar up to run though head stock and triangulate top to bottom across
the bar though pivot at same points out side if that makes sence lol

Looking great Lynton, what do you think of the Gazi shocks? Been thinking about a set of these for my 1100.

ozzy1100
12-08-2011, 09:35 PM
thanks geoff as for the gazis that is the 2nd set i have got but as yet havnt riden any bike with them on
they look good, feel nice and if they do anywhere near as good as they sound they sound be greay
talked to the bloke who makes them a few times and he knows his stuff makes it simple and the choose easy in my book
with in 10 mins on the phone had spring rate and lenghth picked just told him bike ,that i change the angle of the shock
as well one rider small female at under 60 kg turns out a close call but one rate softer(looks like there is basicly only 3 rates used by 95% of all twin shock bikes)
and the short shock(300) with extenders that if u ask for u get at same price and come in good range of lenths but is no issue because theyare fuck all to order in other sizes
as well if u wish to change the spring rate just send it back to him and he will change over to next rate u wish only charging the cost of spring labour is free
like i said havnt ridden them yet so cant say on how good they work but for just under $800 and all u get simple with what else is yr option in that price range
sharky has a set on his and is a lot closer to finish so i quess il wait to hear from him but prob is he rides like a girl lol
txt me ill run you tho them if u like

lol but dont think enough people are looking for what i am teaching myself and none with the money to make it worth while because if u want to spend it go with the top people like ben or id have to work so hard to make it work id end up not loveing it as much.
no fear in shore that there is allways going to be projects for my wife and me, she is allready hitting me up for a darg bike that was shown to us lol

made these boring bars to machine the spacer tubes i need to space the 17 mm zephyr pivot axel to the 20 mm size of the zrx
took about 2 mins to remember why i fucking hated them some much.
these are made on to s/s bar but really 4140 high tense still moves and flexs to much aka sux arse and machines like shit will be fine for plastic and ally but found a 2nd hand 43/64 (17.1)reamer in the uk to my door for under $20 au so will wait for that to turn up to finish them

I've got one of them, make sure you put this coffee in it mate: http://www.eacc.com.au/BuyCoffeeOnline.aspx - it may cost a bit more than most, but fuck me, you'll soon work out why! He's a good mate of mine so mention you're from ASF and he might sort you out. Also, if you want a real buzz try his BLACK MAGIC - you won't be sleeping for a while on that stuff, it's the highest caffeine rated coffee in Australia (even comes with a warning!): http://www.mtcp.com.au/bmagic.asp - ask Fish (ASF member, not swimming creatures) how strong it is!

If you can find a swingarm for a ZRX400 it will drop straight into the 550 frame and looks the same as the 1100 other than having the torque arm mounted on top rather than underslung The ZRX400 caliper and hanger will work with a 240mm disc, and will take a wider wheel, I ran a GSXR1000K4 wheel in mine, although I shaved the sprocket carrier a little to move the chain line inboard. The eccentrics from the 1100 will fit the 400 and allow use of a 20mm spindle rather than the 17mm of the 400.

Thank Si One of only two machines under 1000 bucks worth using
but prob is wife works for blackstar coffee ( 3rd wave style )
and I have at times worked on his 50 yr probat , naked portafilers
(Btw if u have not done it yet I can do it for u mate) and as such spend
a far bit of time around his L M machine(12k) and maza grinders and I
Want a ex comershal machine.
Might give yr mate a go for something diff I'm lucky I get free fresh coffee
It's funny if u don't get the whole good reall coffee thing you can't understand
why the effort is worth it lol

We didn't get the 400 over here mate but good to know mate always like to remember
Stuff like that
I'll be using prob the busa rear caliper I have laying round with the 5.5
Gsxr rim and im yet to see how much I need to take of the rear carrier
And split the the diff with how much I can and want to offset the front

If you ever have a hang over have one double shot mug of Black magic and you'll forget about it. Have two and.... well, it's a bit groovy.

The organic stuff he grows himself in his plantation, very smooth and a big seller and he ships it all over the world as custom orders. Even Paul McCartney has orderd some.

lol might try that mate, i only make double shots and that is in 125ml cup
smooth thats what i love 3rd wave works on that as part of its style i wont bore u with the details lol
the more i got into coffee i found its like bikes and the audio work i have done u never stop learning
must say tho a few doule shots with suicide commando blasting out the sound system is a reall buzz
so i can see what groovy might be...............
