ok so im faily back into building a project my wifes zr 550 zephyr
its her build and she is learning how 2 build we have striped the back and front ends and mock fitted the forks(gsxr 750) arm(zrx1100)and rim and tyres(5.5/3.5).
this brings me to why im posting i was going to ask if it was ok to scribe aine on ends of the pivet housing and gind the clearance need for the arm 2 slide into place or that was it best to machine...
i had preety much thought that it was only cleance and the clotet was only thing that would need machineing.
had a think and come up with this ,only took a few mins to make up and would be easy for most people to come up with something same
all i did was find some bar at the same size as pivet axel, i was lucky and found some percision ground bar(just means ground 2 be really 20 mm not 19.85 as norm eg) measered the colet bore ( 20.1) so really a nice fit( no slop but fluid free movement) but any bar would do

i then just put in drill and put a 8 mm hole in it with a 6 mm grub screw in it to hold a peice of tool steel(a old twist drill ground right would do as well). the idea of this is to just put my drill on the end and use the bar 2 glide the cutter so it is square to the pivet housing and just cut till i have my clearance(still have to measure)

i have only posted in case this is any use to any of you, i havnt tried it yet it might work like shit but with low revs right presure there is no reason
it shouldnt cut nice and have no chatter .when i get a chance ill try it might find some good grinder work still best lol but prefer better fininsh if i can and like i said only took under 30 mins work

not quite sure what your up to ozzy

is this just to scribe where to machine, or is it meant to be doing the machining?

Id say that is to do the machining, i've seen one before.
That looks to be HSS (i hope its HSS) thats ground up to be a facer.

I'd like to see a video of this in action.

Should work fine, may have to watch your speeds and possably load to stop chatter, i made a similar cutter years ago for lowering valve guides when using big cams on my speedway cars and it would chatter a little leaving a serrated look to the cut area, no prob for what i was doing but your going to want a finer finish

I've seen the photo...its a cleaner cut than the stock arm was before he attacked it...

yer fimp it is for machine faceing the ends and latheboy high speed steel it is all the way.
have given it a go and it gets the thumbs up......
yes booster low speed and a far bit of load is the key cut very nice
like russ said came up a good finish

Good job.
Just a tip, you can make a spacer that goes on the cutting shaft that'll stop against the bearing, the other side will be against the HSS.
Doing this will give you the clearance you need and be spot on.
Thats a bit of the guess work out and you can do it once.

If you find a ZRX400 arm it will drop straight into a Zephyr, and will take a 6 inch rim, although they are a 17mm spindle a simple eccentric swap with the 1100 allows a 20mm or bore it up for a 20mm spindle.
