Just trying to decide on whether or not I should take the plunge and get one of these things?

I am seeking all feedback good and bad on them to help make up my mind.

I wish I could test drive one for a while first to see if it lives up to the hype but apparently you can't.

mate I love mine as an ipod and it's great for when ur on the shitter and haven't got a book to read ,you can play games but as far as a phone and being that I live in the country (apparently Coffs Harbour is country) It is absolutely useless I reckon. My car broke an axle about 1 k out of Toormina and couldn't get reception and it's only cos my mate knows my temper that I still have it.But if you are in a city you should be right.

I have an iphone 3G, up until about 3months ago I loved it. What changed my mind was when I update the software through itunes. Since that update my phone has become slow and unresponsive at times, it also retored the factory settings, deleting all my pics, apps and media files.

Besides that one fuck up it has been fine. In saying that, I am due for a new phones now and am not sure if I will get another iphone. I have heard good things about the android software that most other smart phones are running now. My misses has a HTC Desire and it can do pretty much everything the iphone can and runs android.

If you want a phone with fixed memory an irreplaceable battery and one that requires a bloody stupid cover to actually make calls then an iphone is for you!

On the other hand you could buy an android phone that has zillions of apps (just like the iphone) but has the added bonus of working, then have a look at the many that are currently on offer. You will also get expandable memory, replaceable batteries, a choice of handsets and real video calling (not a video with no sound that requires an internet connection to work)

Just so you know, I fucking hate Apple and their bullshit marketing machine. I liken them to Hardley Davidson. Rubbish products with fantastic advertising and a moron born every minute that wants to buy one.

Dan, you took the words right out of my mouth.....

What i hate most is the wankers who get an iphone always have to tell you how good it is to justify owning it, the problems well thats nothing to worry about.

i second the android phone thing as per cc above

i also hate apple, never owned a fuckin ipod and never will
last apple product i owned was an apple IIc in the 80's [B)]

anyways, i took the plunge and bought a used motorola milestone off ebay a few weeks ago ($300 with some extras)
http://www.cnet.com.au/motorola-milestone-339300221.htm
its fucking sweet, full qwerty keyboard, 5megapixie camera and its BLACK (like all proper hardware should be!)
oh, and it plays MP3s
so you dont have to convert all your music to some shit iphone format

there is a version 2 of the milestone coming out any second now, so there will be plenty for sale with all the super-geeks upgrading ;)

oh, and when it comes to plans i would stay away from one that has a "free" handset
you pay an extra $10 a month or so over a "bring your own phone" plan, so the free phone thing is marketing bullshit
im on a vodaphone month-by-month plan now, so when they change their plans in two months time i wont be locked into a redundant plan for 24months ;)

I'm a pretentious cunt who's never needed to do anything that my iPhone can't do, and don't get me started on the whole gay rainbow thing lol!

My advice is to research the capabilities of the many options out there and decide yourself what you actually need the phone to do - I don't need Microsoft Excell documents on my phone. I don't need to make video calls. I need music, phone calls and GPS. My phone does those things well.

For coverage, IMO look more to the service provider to blame than the hardware. I've got a 3GS with Three and actually live out in the sticks. There are only a few places in my area where I don't get coverage.

Another trap with all data phones regardless, is that data included in your cap may not include country areas (roaming).

The only issue I am having is that after a year of very heavy, all day use as an MP3 player/phone/GPS (we're talkiing 4am - 8pm here!), my battery has gone from charging every 2 days to charging every day and a half. But then again, when I plug it into iTunes to update my music collection of a night it charges anyway so it's not that big a deal to me.

Although I haven't researched any prices yet (androids weren't on the market when I bought mine) I will definately be shopping around in a year or so when I expect to upgrade, if a cheaper phone can do what I want it to do just as well, I'll switch.

I put in another vote for Android.

I have had a HTC Desire for about 4 months now and it is awesome! It has all the pluses of an iPhone with the extra's of replaceable battery and memory, a lot more quality FREE apps, a standard interface (not a proprietary POS like the iphone, though there are a lot of accessories for the ipod/phone interface) and it is so much more customisable.

I have also converted a few of my business clients to HTC Desires in stead of the iphones that they were using and they are loving it!

I had an iPhone 3GS from work and swapped it for an HTC Desire and am bloody glad I did. I hated the iPhone. It crashed heaps, battery didn't even last a day, can't look at any websites with flash (so no motogp streaming while on the train), etc.

With the HTC everything I try and do, just works.

Oh and you don't have to fucking use itunes! I hate itunes. I just want to drag my fucking MP3s onto my phone and they work.

I've got an Iphone 4, have had no problems with it, don't need to use the case for reception (and let's face it who uses a good phone without a case anyway) as for fixed memory mine has 16gb and I will never use all of that so it isn't an issue. Mate of mine has a phone that runs android and he is happy with that too and from what I've seen of it I don't mind it either but I don't hate it just because I have an Iphone it is just a phone. I'm a bit like Jup in that I like the Iphone because it is also a very good mp3 player. I find it odd that the Iphone haters seem to be a lot more passionate than the ones who have them.

Clint I had a 3G as well and the problem is that the updated OS is made for running on the 4 which is a lot faster yeah they probably should have an OS for each but that is monopoly for you.

BTW fimp Ipods/phones will play mp3s itunes will even let you convert your music to mp3 if you want to it just isn't as high a quality as the native aac. Not that I can tell the difference mind you.

And that's the catch with fancy touch screen phones. If you're a plumber, don't buy an iPhone (or any touch screen phone for that matter)! As I said before, and rod alluded to so eloquently, buy the best phone to suit your needs.

I'd still be running my old nokia 6110 if some opportunistic prick hadn't stolen it.

I have a HTC Desire and the wife and son have an iPhone, the iPhones, both of them, have been back to the shop a couple of times, I've had no trouble at all with the HTC.

Looking fairly at both the apple seems to have a slightly smoother interface between screens but is a shit phone and just changes it's setting whenever it feels like it.

The HTC has a bit of trouble connecting to my laptop via the USB cable but the Bluetooth works fine, got me fucked.

I basically hate all things apple so I was never going to buy an iPhone anyway, I hate the way apple always hijacks everything, so the HTC was an easy choice.

I picked up my Nokia E71 the other day and it felt like stepping back to the 80's compared to the HTC.

This is all very gay, but I will join in as there's just a couple of things to add. I have the HTC Desire as well and it's never missed a beat, a very capable phone. Had Sony Ericsson up until then and as trivial as it sounds the only thing I wish the HTC had was voice recognition dialling and per-contact-ring-tone-allocation. Why? Well I use the phone in the Ute as a bluetooth device through the stereo for hands free but without the voice dialling I now have to pull over and actually go through the contacts to make a call out where as I used to just be able to press one button and say the name for it to dial. (Incoming is obviously fine). ...and as for the allocating your own tunes, well fuck, the bullshit that comes standard shits me and I get that many calls where I can't answer but would make the extra effort if I knew who it wa,s from a distance (by the ring tone).

Oh, and as for the original question: Iphones suck balls. One of the lads at work has to restart his phone every time he sends a message.

Ok, gayness over.

Si you can do both actually.
Choose the contact you want & halfway down the screen is the choose
rintone button.
As for the Voice dialer go to the android market & search Voice dialer, there's heaps of apps.

Gix11

See Ben, that's why you're on the big money.

Cheers mate, The "choose ringtone button" still uses the default tones instead of loading up your own as far as I can see, but the voice dialler thing is News-Gold to me. Cheers again!

go into the music app and listen to a song that you want as the ring tone then hit "menu" -> "set as ring tone" -> "contact ringtone"

Gix11
04-11-2010, 01:36 PM
Cheers mate, that actually seems easier than the voice dialler thing. There's hundreds of voice activated shit that wants me to do all sorts of stuff other than actually dial a contact through blue tooth! I'm usually switched on to this sort of stuff but the wank factor has stopped me being interested in wizz bang phones and so now a simple thing that was always availbe on every other phone is now s fuckin' effort to get hold of and the wank department has bitent me on the arse.

Just been doing a bit of research. HTC announced this in August:

"Voice dialling is only available in North America due to the limitations of the voice recognition software database that our phone uses. We are researching the possibility of expanding the coverage of the voice dialling feature but we are still analyzing the feasibility and currently have no schedule to relay to you now. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

I updated to the latest Android 2.2 operating software but there's nothing new in it to help.

Looks like I was right after all and Ben should have a pay decrease....:D

If anyone knows any different I'm all ears....

This shit is pissing me off. I have for a long time now hated anything Apple makes. I just hate the way they seem to create shit and then try and convince you that you cant live without it!
Anyhoo, my Nokia N95 (love that phone!) got fucked up on the way down to PI so I put it in for repair, they told me it will take an age for the parts to fix it, so they will replace it instead. They offered me an N97, an N97 mini or an iPhone4. I thought i'd see what all the talk is about and have accepted the iPhone4. It wont arrive for a couple of weeks, but, now I hear the Nokia N8 is to be released soon, DOH!
Good news is, i'm due for an update on my contract in January. So if im not happy with the Apple jobby, i'll get the N8 in a few months anyway and will have a genuine chance to compare as an everyday phonethingy.

The bigest prob i see with all the phone companys is written into there contracts, look hard at what you sign ! If your dumb enough to go for a fixed 2 year contract with aphone included (standar pushed by most if not all phone companys) there is a clause stating they don't even have to provide the service there selling you and/or can change the details of said contract at there discretion without even notifiying you !

Then they push a phone that has services you prob dont need on a locked in contract of 2 years when the phone manufacturer states specifically the phone is designed to last 12 months maximum (nokia recomendation of 12 months, I use to service them) and the phone goes out of production on average every 8 months the new model is released (phone companys by internation law are ment to supply parts and service for up to 2 years but dont) effectivly forcing most people to update to a new phone.

I have an old nokia 5100 model that is as old as the hills works great and has gone through 6 batterys (I have used different batterys and a 12 vold adapter to maintain its use as its used in a back to base alarm system that calls me when activated so i can come pay a visit to who ever chose to risk there life entering somewhere they really shouldnt have.)
