I went to the Shrine the other weekend to see one of my rellies Victoria cross and other medals he won/earnt during the 1st world war.
I hadn't been to the shrine since I was a kid in school. Everyone should make the effort to go to their states own Shrine or even a statue in the middle of the main st. If for no other reason than to say "thank you", not on any particular day. Say it because you mean it.
I know there is quite a few of you guys on here in the armed forces, you are the people that let me sleep soundly and possibly fart and snore to my hearts content.

So it is to you guys who are, those who have and those that will provide that security, I say from deep in my heart,

"Thank you, I will remember you."

I went to the one in Greenmount just south of Toowoomba with my Mrs on our date the other week. we both spent half an hour reading the names of the fallen brothers, fathers, uncles and paying our respects to these men who we'll never get the chance to thank in person for their efforts.

It's always good to know you have those genes. Nice write up and piccies. I visited Vimmy Ridge, Somme, Ypes and others during a history trip when I was 14. It certainly is humbling and I'm planning a trip over there again in the next year. I don't know if I lost any family in the wars. My mum's dad was a child when they fled Italy and walked across Europe to get to the UK. My dads's mum's cousin was Barnes Wallis. My auntie would know.. really should look into my ancestors and their (mis)deeds.

I just spent a week at the United States Naval Academy and I was absolutely gobsmacked by the support and respect that all serving members get from civilians over there, makes half the people in Aus look like ungrateful fucks.

Americans show their patriotism a lot more than Australians...they also start more wars than us....and their win:loss ratio in tha past 50 odd years is pretty shithouse.

REALY BLOODY ANGRY when fuckin prats like the opposition leader didnt visit our lads cause he "didnt want to be jet lagged"WHAT AN INSULT..let me repeat VERY PROUD ..MATE..

My Pop was a Gallipoli original. One of the few that made it there and back. He never spoke about the war except to say (about the Turks) "they were just scared young blokes like us, doing what their country told them was right - during times of cease-fire we used to go over to their trenches and swap cigarettes with them".
That statement has always made me think about how bloody stupid war is and how much we owe to the 'pawns' that are sent to fight them.

R.I.P Pop and here's cheers to no more bloody wars.

Near RAF Lyneham where they bring back our fallen heroes, the small town of Wooten Bassett all turn out, lining the streets to show respect to the deceased as they are driven through their town. http://www.woottonbassett.gov.uk/

And then you have fuckers like this lot who wanted to have a 'protest' during one of the repatriations http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/onthefrontline/6931015/Wootton-Bassett-march-Gordon-Brown-warns-it-would-be-completely-inappropriate.html do you have such groups out there who do this in OZ? I think the UK stands strongly behind our Armed Forces but most of don't agree that they should be out there dying without enough equipment and in the case of the Iraq war - a questionable reason to be there. We still support our troops even if we don't support the governments reason to have them out there.

The wars aren't started by the military Rich that is the Government that start them then sends the military, they go whether they know they are going to lose or not as it's their duty.

Oh please.

Look up the meaning of "jingoism" and you'll see a great example of what's wrong with seppostan.

I really don't want to fuck up such a respectful thread...but if anyone honestly believes that Americans can teach anyone else how to behave ...they are fucking deluded.

Just because Australians don't all have flags in their front yards or on their cars, doesn't mean we don't love and respect our armed forces.

It isn't just the flags Rich, I even told the Americans that they go a bit overboard with the whole patriotism thing, I am mainly talking about the respect that they outwardly show to their armed forces. Me and some mates did a Guard in Melbourne a few years ago and we couldn't be arsed going back to the ship to get changed so we went out in uniform, not only were we asked why the fuck would we wear uniform to a pub as it is like going straight from football practice with your training gear on but we were refused entry into one pub because once there was a fight in that pub between sailors in uniform and civilians and the bouncers even told us that it was started by the civilians but they didn't need the heartache.
