im working on a dyo drag bike. Im after a powerplant 250-750cc
im on a limited budget and would like to keep the motor as simple as possible, ive been looking at the early eighties air cooled donks
what im after is a readily available powerplant with a proven rep for reliability ,simplicity thats backed by the aftermarket and has spares readily available. does such a thing exist or am i better off looking at later model engines.
im not out to break world records im just after a cheap strong well backed engine that i can learn the basics on and have fun upgrading as cash becomes available....thanks....
are gpz 750 turbo donks hard to come by?

anyone got suggestions on any donks between 250-750cc regardless of age that may be suitable ? maybe a favourite motor of yours or one of your mates that has a bit of a rep as a performer?

try the oil cooled gsxr 750, seem that every one is taking them out and putting in 11' so should be a few around and always plenty of spares avalible at a reasnoble price

Hope this helps

I have a standard-ish GPZ750 for sale at a killer price if you are after one.

the Z motor definately. my gpz750 motor is rock solid and a good base point with decent support. You can get big bore kits still to go from 738 to 810. you can use a 6speed tranny from a 550 motor(as long as you arent pushing super high HP). The old air cooled kaw motors are good.

Another note, i also have a late 70s cb750 motor and they are pretty solid too. I think if you more or less restrict yourself to a 550-750 aircooled motor from the late 70s to mid 80s you will be fine. Out of all of them id say the gsxr brand would have the largest parts following but thats here in the states anyways.

ps, 750turbos i dont think are the easiest to come by. Not as cheap as you will find some NA air cooled motors anyways

Suzuki : GS750 (76'), followed by GS1000(77'), Followed by GSX1100(79'), followed by GSX1135(84').

Kawasaki : widowmaker (750 triple stroker), z900(73'?), z1000 (77'), GPz1100 (80'|81'), GPz900 (84')

any of the oil cooled 750's are a good start although the long stroke ones ( 749 ) are more abundant so more spares, you can pick them up for less than $1000 compleat, but have to be patient, having said that any of the motors suggested will do the job as well, a bloke at the drags has an gsx 1100 motor ( standard ) in a very nice dragbike chassis and has run mid 10's with it.

initial thoughts of developing an air cooled ,250 or 500 with turbocharging are rapidly being replaced with the thought of running a stockish 750 of suzuki origin
