you may recall my introductory post showing my bike and stating my intention to get it looking a bit more like this:

Johnnay

Hmm farking pics are too big - gotta figure this out and I'll continue..[V]

22-02-2007, 04:54 PM
You need a set of side cover badges from over here mate, where they were a GSX 1100. Those ones you got look like it should be a shaft drive unit

Johnnay
22-02-2007, 04:58 PM
Anyways, back to the story - got the bike stripped down and installed new bars:

Johnnay
22-02-2007, 04:59 PM
Chalk, those are the stock badges here - I'll have a lookie for GSX ones, but the badging doesn't really move me one way or the other...

Johnnay

Oops, the grinder slipped...[:0]

Now you see 'em

Johnnay
22-02-2007, 05:08 PM
Now you don't - no turning back now, it's monoshock it or mount it on the garage wall as art :D

Johnnay

Choice of swingarm is between this:
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/50460225571134.JPG

Johnnay
22-02-2007, 05:13 PM
And this - it's a honda unit pro swinger, where the upper shock mount is attached to the swingarm itself - only need the pivot and the lower mount on the frame. This will be a lot harder to fit than the GSXR swingarm, as it's much wider, and I don't know if I can mill it down enough and still have room for the chain by the upright part of the upper shock mount. will measure some more and see...

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/50460225577169.JPG

Johnnay
22-02-2007, 05:20 PM
so now, on to my questions for the gurus..
1. how to fit the honda swingarm, as it's 35mm wider than the inside of the frame? Too much trouble?
2. Fitting the GSXR swingarm is much easier, but is it possible to bend this back without breaking it?

Hey, that's a cool fueltank you got there J. [8D]
We don't get GS or GSXs with that tank shape in Aus. (or do we?)
Keep the pics of the monoshock conversion coming too mate, I'm sure I'm not the only one here who's interested.

22-02-2007, 05:23 PM
That shape was on the first 6 months in Australia (ET model 79') and is by far the best looking tank, and the model I would love to get my hands on again. More like the GS1000 tank.
They changed up to the more bulbous, larger tank for the Castrol 6 hour of that year.

i'd go the gixxer arm

TurboKat
22-02-2007, 05:46 PM
Well, I stand corrected then. [:I]
I'm looking Ebay's way for that tank now ;)
I hope you're not pulling my dick (again) Chalky [^]

22-02-2007, 05:51 PM
No straight up mate, and the only place I've seen them is in wreckers (apart from a couple of bikes in the 80's, including mine), where most of the staff wouldn't know the difference.
They were only available for the first 6 months, so there probably isn't that many left anymore. If you perchance come across 2 let me know.
TBH I don't know what the difference is between them and the last of the GS1000S's, they could very well be the same.

Is that a reference to nerds at train tracks

or trouble making drug fiends? :D

TurboKat
22-02-2007, 06:00 PM
Nah, I've got a coupla GS 1000s here & they were all rounded tops, I swear, I thought all GSXs had the "Breadbox" style tank. [?]
Johnnay's looks like a hybrid GS/GSX come to think of it. [^]

Hey Si!

Can we have a frame and engine number forum for these two anoraks please?

:D:D:D

22-02-2007, 06:08 PM
Yeah, the breadbox (24 litres) was just an enlarged 'real' GSX tank, which is 19 litres. It would have resulted in too many fuel stops during the 6 hour, and since that was the profile that was promoted for and after the race Suzuki stayed with it, in Australia, the Europeans may have gotten the 24 litre tank straight up.

The manuals for the bike do list the US as having the 19 Litre tank, so it looks like they didn't get the volume increase, might be a better place to source a tank from.

Go Johnnay, take the bent bit off and use that.Your bike will look great with the new tail and monoshock set up.
If you see another of the "GS1100" badges, give us a yell,I wouldn't mind one as a piece of exotica...ooooh,there goes the 5.15 from Central to Blayney, all aboard!

More update pics of the conversion thanks Bud.

Hard to tell from the pic - try heating it and you might be lucky. Otherwise get it welded back on (DUH!)

BTW - noice work Johnnay!

Gix11
22-02-2007, 09:27 PM
I'm no pro,but I wouldn't be relying on anything that has been bent and stressed. Get it cut of and welded on again. As for milling the other arm down to fit, Ben might be able to answer that as he has just milled down a VFR single sider to fit in the TL. You there Ben?

For mine definately the Honda , looks heaps better BTW big change looks nice

zx12argh
22-02-2007, 10:11 PM
ooohhh measure twice cut once is something I go over and over in my head as I'm doing anything like this... Good luck putting it back together mate!

Johnnay
23-02-2007, 03:10 AM
Gix - I hear ya on the integrity - I may just cut it off, since I don't even have a rear stand!

Huey - I like the HOnda one too, but 35mm would have to come off it, mostly (all?) on the brake side of the pivot - would leave that side dangerously thin, I think. Sadly, I think I'm going to go with the gixxer. Paid big coin for that headlight, so it's staying!!

Johnnay

Johnnay

From the rear - I dunno, I hope that swingarm is straight - every time I look at it I think it's bent - how do I tell for sure?
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/92252282636406.JPG

24-02-2007, 11:59 AM
Stringline it from the front wheel. measure from various points along the length arm.

Tone
24-02-2007, 12:27 PM
Mock up or not...it looks fuckin ace now johnnay.

Johnnay
25-02-2007, 02:41 AM
Chalk, what i've never understood about stringlining is how you know if the two wheels are straight relative to the frame - it will show if they're straight relative to each other, but isn't it possible that if the swingarm is tweaked, then the bike could be "crabbing" down the road?

Tone - thanks mate, I"m liking it too!

25-02-2007, 09:43 AM
Measure frame points to string, if the frames bent the figures from one side to the other will vary. A more modern way of doing it is to use laser beams (not pointers though). 'Fix' the front end square to the frame and move back from there.
It's also a handy way to validate the chain adjuster marks, as a lot of 70's 80's bikes factory marks were woefully inaccurate, including on many GSX's.

Gix11

Finally able to post an update on this...

for those who are interested, did a monoshock conversion thread here:
http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=108909&highlight=monoshock

Anyways, lots done so far:
- GSXR rear monoshock and front end conversion
- simplified wiring harness with new switchgear
- shortened rear end
- custom aluminum fender and battery box
- custom seat (almost done)

pics next...[:p]

I reckon your exhaust as gotta go tho mate - looks like you've got plenty of clearance to stick it under the bike ;)

Johnnay
12-08-2007, 10:44 AM
Thanks guys - I cut the can in half, but the zorst still looks kinda long and pokey with the shortened tail. It actually interferes with the shock linkage, so it's not fully sorted yet. Can't decide whether to just shorten it some more, do one of those pointy-forward jobbies, or something completely different.

Thanks for all the comments! Still sorting out a couple of issues - need to add spacers to the pegs, as I can't downshift without fouling on the kickstand - looked like a dickhead starting off in third.[:I]

Same problem on the other side - brake lever fouls on the exhaust mounting bolt - only on hard braking - yikes!

Other than that, I'm surprised everything works as well as it does. Still need to figure out a steering damper before taking it up to ridiculous speeds, though. anyone have ideas/pics on how to mount?
