View Full Version : Bored With 'Fighters- Building A Chopper

The locals are all riding motorised bicycles to and from the bottlo, so I thought I'd join them.

Started out with an original Jesse James West Coast Chopper frame that used to look something like-

Cut off the fork tube and raked it a bit...

Bought some stainless tube to extend the forks a little...

It's looking pretty close to the bike I had in mind

Looking for a mtb front wheel (26") if anyone in Syd has one and working out if we can make a disc wheel for the rear.

Then it just needs a 49cc moteur and it's GTG

I think even your nymph like weight might be a bit much for those forks mate.....

I love the mentalness, but that rake might render the steering totally obsolete. Please prove us both wrong as this would make for some great Large video footage.

Ben reckons they'll be fine....I recon a fork brace might be next on the list tho'

Still thinking about putting a pivot at the wheel mount and making a springer front end

Steering is way down on the list of things it needs to be able to do.

I had the idea of fitting a shorted kart axle and making it into a trike, which would totally unrideable.[8D]

I reckon you should use a 20" BMX wheel up front.
If you get a hub of a MTB with a disc mount it would be easy to use the smaller rim, make it a single speed by using a couple of spacers and 1 sprocket.
You will have to widen the rear to fit it in but thats easy... You have a press don't you?

I'm thinking of going the other way and fitting a three speed hub to help the moteur out a bit. Naturally it will necessitate a suicide shifter to be fitted.[8D]

Also the plan was to use that wheel but like certain members hereabouts, the rim has taken a massive pounding and its integrity is suspect.

I built one 5 or six years ago with rake and forks about that long...put on teeny front wheel and apehangers. Flat black with red oxide primer rims and details. Wouldn't say it steered, the wheel just kinda flopped from side to side, and you'd be lucky to be able to even pedal it. About all it's good for is hanging on the wall in the shed... :)

Both rims on the bike are pretty much fucked and spinners are cheap enough to buy-

I like it does the rear axle double as a tyre changing tool and I can see that it could do so much more like stand up wheelies using that as a rear peg wow I know you have already thought of all this and that's why it's like that, right?

Picked this up on egay for the wheels/seat/brakes etc...just waiting for LL to pick it up..

Also did some research on rake and trail and found this mob-

60" over forks seem to not be a problem if you get the geometry right.[8D]

I was also thining about a pushie that I've got at home. It changes gears automatically. It has two weights that sit on the spokes and as your speed increase the weights are linked to the gearset and slowly move the shifter across the gear cassette.

If you could make that work with a motor it would be unreal.
