get real you silly cunt the NBN is a white elephant
Australia could piggy back off one of the current military comms satellites and have 100x broadband to the 10% who aren't currently covered

Laying miles and miles of fibre channel is a fucking expensive joke, and that ranga bitch is going to spend all our lovely road renovation funding on it........and on the repairs when the fucking fibre cable snaps - which it will

do you mean the military comms satellites that we rent?... the ones that australia does not own? those ones? (I was a COMMUNICATIONS and information systems controller in the RAAF for 4 years)

I'm not sure that fibre-optic cable snaps very often.
Broadband doesn't have to go via fibre-optic, in many instances radio propagation may well
be a more viable alternative.
I imagine they would be costing it all up.
What, not every-one's happy with the due process?
At least she didn't get in to power, and then lie, go to war, pull in allies, etc on some dodgy
vote count in Florida and some legal bullshit.

they'd be the ones. Heaps of bandwidth available on them and some we rent which have no data passing through them. I used to work for a data storage company and have seen TB bounced over military sats to sync SANs for a Govt agency to save somebodies arse.
I also know somebody in a satellite comms company rolling out over the pacific islands - much less spend than the NBN

So how much is sat time and equipment to get 100mb/s to 99 of the country using satellite then?

Now now, let's not get into a paddy xa-mont. After all you young chaps do get hot under the collar.

after 4 years punching buttons for the <s>Navy</s> RAAF you must be a bloody expert on high end project costings?
Certainly my 16 years in the IT industry selling costing and delivering high end projects have taught me to smell a lemon when I see one.

And 10 years accounting experience before that have taught me to see when a project is massively over costed.

And BTW why do we need cpoverage for 99% of the Australian land mass when most of us live on the cost (something like 90% of Australians live within 100kms of the coastline) and the other 10% are spread thinly around the interior?

Oh and the coastal area can be covered by current infrastructure if Telstra get of their ass and deploy the right gateways at the exchanges?

I'm pretty sure i never suggested that i was an expert. As far as I am aware neither of us are experts. You may have experience in the IT industry with large projects, but that isn't what i am questioning here.

What i AM questioning is a comparison of apples to apples. I BELIEVE (i dont 'know', this is just an estimation on my part) that delivering the same level of broadband that will be available through the labor governments NBN to the same percentage of the population would cost more using satellite technology.

Also... i'm not here to argue with anyone about how shit Telstra and their monopoly are...

I believe the NBN in concept is a good idea
but the proposed execution is a waste of money and possibly cheaper by satellite, definitely cheaper methods are available

Waiting for Hos to jump in with some conspiracy theory!

Hey Bubble Boy, have they closed your local hospital or downgraded it yet?
With a lot of rellies living in the bush and getting older, I am well aware of the inadequacy of medical facilities west of the hills in NSW.

If you believe that there was a winner in the election, you're dreaming. One mob lost: Australia. There was no clear winner. Why the fuck can't we have 'first past the post' elections? Fuck the preferences.

The Chaser crew hit the nail fair on the noggin.

Why not just have Party A or Party B....you vote for one or the other...
You then have one vote to put against an outsider/independant party.

The thing that shits me here is that I have to, by law vote,..even if I don't believe in any of the parties....and if I spoil the paper they put the vote to the standing gov ?????

Reality I think is that there both fucked and both do as there minders want them to do (big business etc , at the risk of being hos like)

If you wanted a decent system the country would be run more business like, BUT pollies would be held accountable for there fuckups by the people in a court of law , IE break a core prommis JAIL time ! Pay on a performance basis etc . Will never happen is a pipe dream but till it does the country will continue to go down a simmilar route to shit-topia.

As far as fiber optic/sat debait goes once the fiber is in the ground (and yes its a big $$$ investment) but its pritty much ok in the ground if some random fucker cuts it easly reparable the exchanges can even tell you how far along the line it is cut to the centimetre! And the whole bandwidth bullshit doesnt float worth a pinch of shit, light transmition has a bandwidth of infinitly larger data capabilitys and its only the exchanges that would need to be updated for the power of 1000 fold increases in current fiber optic data rates. You cant go up and swap out a sat in space for the kind of cash you could do every exchange in Aus for ! Rent them is a fine idea IF you can find someone willing to rent it (unlikley at best Usa is far to interested in looking for binlarden etc lol) And what happens when Hos's solar events turn up (they might not be cataclismic like he pradicts but a good solar flare can take out several sats permanant (exchanges are sensitive to this in extreem events but fiber optic is immune !)
