I raced speedway (cars) for quite a few years and heard lots of stories of guys driving to the track (back in the 60's) in the family sedan, taking out the windows and lights and racing all night. At the end of the night they'd put the lights and screens back in and drive it home again.
If the car got 'torn up' in a prang they'd be fixing it at the track before they could go anywhere. I heard a few stories of guys that would end up camped in the pits for a few days because they had to wait until Monday morning to buy parts for their damaged cars.

Now that's passion!
