You're gonna have to excuse the oncoming rambling in this post, this thing has been in the works for a long time and I work away at sea so I'm getting more and more excited about it as the chopping block closes in. I lie awake at night on the ship every night dreaming and scheming about what this bike is going to be, so I'm gonna get it all out of my system here.

So yeah, I'm 22 and this is my second time fighter'ing a bike. My last bike was my first bike, a 2009 LAMS SFV650 (gladius) that I think I did pretty well with, all pretty cheap(ish) cosmetic changes which in the end actually turned it into a real head-turner (gladius' are fucking ugly bikes, imo) and a pretty mean looking "lamb in wolf's clothing" streetfighter (won SV of the month over at svrider.com >> here's a pic
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs455.snc3/26053_429430389988_512214988_5374675_6438694_n.jpg

I got rid of that (I'll miss the v-twin noise :( ) and got myself a 2005 zx10r, the computers here at work wont let me upload pictures so out of interests sake let's say it's more or less exactly identical to this except for a different yoshi pipe and different tail tidy:
http://www.tedvernon.com/itemimages/2bikesandtruck-017.jpg

(a pretty dumb move going from a LAMS 650 straight to a ball shredding machine like this, I mean, when I first got it and rode it out of the delivery depot I was thinking "HOLY SHIT THIS THING HAS GOT FUCKING BALLS" as it screamed off down the West Gate freeway howling between my legs... and I am still trying to get rid of the erection.
So I hear you say "idiot! that bike is too much for yoU!" but hey, birds learn to fly by being thrown out of the nest... and I want to fly... so nyer [|)])

The reason I got this bike was a) because the CBR1000RR I had my eye on got sold and b) I saw this picture on customfighters and knew what I had to do
http://www.customfighters.com/forums/imagehosting/301949dba95bd147d.jpg < I saw the raw sexiness of this thing naked and knew that it would be the perfect place to start, and all the past year or so of browsing forums and drooling over other guy's builds will soon manifest themselves into the dream fighter I want to make.

So I've already started getting parts in, I've ordered this alien mask from streetfightersinc

http://www.streetfightersinc.com/images/ShowyAlien2small.jpg

I'm about to start looking at ordering some of those KOSO gauges (unless anyone has any better suggestions...?)

Also emailed outlaw about ordering some of those serrated brake levers.

I'm going to keep the clip-ons, I don't know what it is but the upright bars thing has just never rubbed off on me. I've seen some sexy as fuck fighters with uprights but they just dont do it for me, and I love the down, aggressive racing position from clip ons. I still have a young, unbroken spinal column so I'm going to get the most out of it while I can.

Once I do everything I can do I'll take it into bikecraft and get the trickier parts like wiring etc done (my electronic skills leave a lot to be desired) and any machining/cutting that needs to be done. And while I'm at it, I may as well ask this:

***According to a guy with an 05 ZX10r over at customfighters he said he had to "shave" off the front of the RAM air intake between the forks to get his mask to mount nice and close and still be able to turn... do any of you have any objections to this?*** I casually asked a mechanic and he said "logically there shouldn't be an issue but the sensible me should really say you should never touch the frame of a bike, but essentially all you're doing is shaving off the end of a pipe so there shouldn't be a problem"

do you tend to agree with this? I couldn't see much problem if it was done professionally.

So yeah, essentially that's what I'll be doing. Mask, bar-ends, get a nice little rad-overflow bottle fabbed up, thinking just a simple stainless bottle, get those serrated levers, if the bellypan already on the bike doesn't work with the fighter look I may have to look at ordering another one but it looks like it could work with the main fairing removed, already has a radguard, tail tidy is pretty much done, the gauges, eventually when I get a new job I'll start looking at chucking a buell tail on the end and see what I can do about arranging a single sided swing arm but that's still a while away yet, I'll just get over these first smaller steps first then start working on the ass end later on.

Anyway... thanks for letting me vent out... I got told I had to before posting elsewhere... hopefully you can see where I'm going.

Great site guys... lots of great looking builds on here and I look forward to building my dream.

cheers

hey man,

I remember seeing your gladiola on the front of SVrider (dont need along memory... it was only like a month ago) and i gotta say, that is the best looking example i have seen.

Good luck on the 10, both with the build and the restraining yourself from killing yourself on it :P I love the look of the ZX10 and like everybike, it'll look better as a fighter :D

Also, i agree with ya on the clipon thing, bu like you i am young and (semi)flexible as well... so no aches from it yet.

Thanks fellas. When I first got it and started riding it and would walk outside in the morning I started thinking "do I really want to strip this? It doesn't look so bad as it is but I soon grew some Fucking balls again and pushed through my Nancy faggot sportsbike episode and realized it HAD to be done. Anyway here's a pic of the bike as is, wit yours truly mounted on it for the very first time. It looks small on me but it's just the angle.

Thanks guys l.. Gitzy cheers for the tip I did see that mask but it doesn't suit what I want... I wanted to be reallyspecific with whati wanted and make no compromise.

Do you see a problem with shaving off a bit from the ram intake so I can fit th alien mask close?

xa-mont
31-08-2010, 09:54 AM
i reckon there would have to be a way to make it fit with the ram intake still intact. you may have to remove some material from the back of the mask though.

Where abouts are you in melbourne? If you need a hand with anything let me know. I'm no pro at anything but i'm always happy to play around with things :D (helps me not spend so much money when i can play with someone else's stuff as well :P

I'm in st kilda east at the momen but moving In the next cpl months. It's getting a roadworthy check done ATM (also I need to find a cheaper, better place to get these things done)

after that I'll take it out to point cook to start shredding you're more than welcome to have a fiddle (with my bike)

ive had a look and it doesn't look like it's gnna work without cutting some RAM off but I'll leave that to an expert

I couldnt see it being a drama, would shave the absolute minimum off it but rekon it'l be fine either way. the length of the ram inlet shouldnt really change the ammount of air it can suck in...

Hey Buddy, if you're in town on saturday, pop in and meet some of the Vic members. Can't miss 'em, look for ASF shirts and hoodies.

Welcome Alex,
The only problem i can see with cutting the RAM intake, is the fact its a tune lenght component and needs to be open.
By covering it you will have a negitive effect on your mid to top end power because the air isn't being RAMMED in.
Its something that could be fixed else where with pipes and shit (technical speak)
The ZX9's need some work to overcome the ram tubes being removed so maybe Timbo or TK will have some words at you.

hi alex, as latheboy said, putting that mask on( i did 1 last week) will effectivly block ur air flow, the zx i did last week was also fitted with a custom zorst and PC3, had it retuned on a dyno and came up great(the mask was a gemo unit with projectors and no shaving was required. BTW i work @ BC)

Hey scotty! Thanks heaps mate, I talked to the owner of that black 05 with the red frame over at cf.com (can't link on iPhone) and he said he lost a few ram hp at the top end but barely enough for him to notice
how much would I be lookig at to bring it into u guys to do all that for me? (mount mAsk, tune etc)? Brad said $80/h but can u give a rough quote?

Edit: no dramas I went for a cruise and had a chat to brad@bc and he said it's not gonna be an issue to get around it so that's sweet. And it's all going to cost a lot less than I thought so i'm pretty stoked with that! It's all coming together nicely!

Also got my craft fighter helmet today :) thing is mental! Love it

Hey dude that may well come in handy actually as te place in point cook I only have very basic tools (and I only have a very basic knowledge) but I might take you up on that I'll let u know. Also won't be able to make it to the shindig as I'm on the ship till Monday now :(

I did a quick (really shitty mspaint) mock of what I'm hoping will work, just demo'ing the lines I'm hoping will work from this mask with the lines of the bike, let me know what you think (should I move this to the build forums? feel like I'm polluting the website, i have too much spare time on my hands)

niice dude! cnt wait to see that headlight on!

ketse
09-11-2010, 02:55 PM
it really is a sex headlight, looks a lot better than I thought it would from the pics. I got it from streetfightersinc, and according to them the delay was due to the manufacturer moving location or something... ideally i would have liked to have had it before spring but what can ya do.

i dropped it into brad @ bikecraft (sorry dyl i don't have the means to be travelling to mornington often enough to help out and i don't mind spending the $) and threw my ideas at him... hopefully it won't take too long. i would have liked to have done it myself but i don't have the know-how to be fucking around with wires and whatnot. absolutely hanging to see how this turns out though!! i've been riding around this tupperware-covered nugget for too long now (and was starting to question whether I should do the conversion... but glad I made the decision)

hopefully will have pics for y'all soon :D

i saw a guy on a black 08 zx10r out marysville way a few weeks ago on a sunday ride with the same mask but he had upright bars (i'm keeping the clip ons) any idea who that could have been?
