The other thing is to use surfboard resin as it much clearer than normal laminating resin. if you already knew all this shit just tell me to shut the fuck up...

nope... don't know any of it! happy to hear as many tips as you can give.

I'm using good quality epoxy resin (west systems) that apparently it the bomb shiznit... so i think that should be fine.

It pulled out alright this morning (there was a pool of resin in the middle, which was hard so i figured the lot must have been hard.)

It had all cured, however as i suspected there were some voids at the edges, as well as some bits towards the edges which didn't wet out properly. I'm thinking that i may have to vac bag it, just not so sure how it will go with the complex shape of the mould. I might even cut it in half (at the connection between the chain guard and actual hugger) to make it a little les complex, then just re-join it after both halfs and done.

Pictures to follow tonight.

Use a nice flexable bag with lots of surface area ,you'd be supprized what bagging will do. For race stuff/special order extra lite stuff the Vac baging helps keep the resin volume to a minimum. And UV light cured res helps with the process.

well here is how it turned out... lots of voids, but all in all not terrible for a first attempt.

I think bagging will be the go for sure.

so... carbon aside right now as my headlights nearly falling off has taken precedence :P

Got a lovely dash today from Kav at VCM (for nothing cause he is a fucking legend!) so first was trying to find where to mount the fucker.

in the nook:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/xacoupe/My%20SV650/2011-09-23191719.jpg

or on the stem bolt:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/xacoupe/My%20SV650/2011-09-23191604.jpg

I then started playing with headlight ideas and the dominator without the back mounted up pretty easy to almost exactly where i want it (with the clutch cable relocated OVER the triple... this will take some testing to make sure it doesn't fuck with shit.) and a bit of a screen, which also helped decide where the dash should go.

I need to kick the screen out a little more at thhe bottom but it was a little hard to hold in place like that.

Looking good trav that light idea has definitely grown on me mate I reckon it will suit your build well as for the dash I reckon it looks good on the stem nut

here's where i'm at after today:

Headlight mounted with some more lattice work. (that isn't quite the final position, i moved it a bit after looking at it for a while)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/xacoupe/My%20SV650/2011-09-25151219.jpg

then mocked up the little fairing again. chopped a bit off the sides to make it a little less BAM!

And here is a photoshop of the kind of paint i'll do on it (make it out of CF, then paint a white number plate on it... or maybe just as a vinyl and one for the tail as well.)

That looks tops mate. How would you go cutting off the front of the top triple and relocating the ignition barrel else where.

Thinking i might just buy a new top triple without the bit for the SV gauges and whatnot. Id probably be better off that way (this to triple is a specific design for SV's with Gix forks so you can keep it looking pretty stock)

Anyone got a recomendation of somewhere to get a nice top triple... and maybe a bottom one too? :P

Just an idea for ya trav but I thought that maybe you could use this for a mould

something more like this... i like it. looks heaps cooler. I think i'll just make the shape myself though out of steel first rather than buy the bit off ebay. Looking at pictures of yz450f's it looks like it would be a fair chunk bigger than i would want.

When I was in hossie I spent most of my time drawing headlight designs and I will say it's fucking hard to design something that suits every bike I got bored with doing that anyway but I have a book full of ideas that I will use on my future builds

well the headlight is staying where it is for at least a while... i actually quite like to so :censored: the haters :P

i have also finished hooking up the new dash. just need to sort some warning lights and a temp sensor.

and no.3 i have started working on some carbon side covers.

Thanks to Cam (AKA Tuckabag) i have a pristine set to play with.

I have mounted/waxed/PVA'd/glassed the right hand one for a mold.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/xacoupe/My%20SV650/2011-10-02170855.jpg

Should pop out nicely tomorrow. I used a bit of chapped strand for the tighter areas.

lookin good mate. once you get the hang of that carbon, you'll be making all sorts of trick parts.

the mold came out really well. just waxed it up and PVA'd it ready to try some vacuum bagging CF tonight!!! i'm well excited!

vacuum bagging is the bomb!... well it looks like it is so far anyway :P

Here it is all bagged up.

This first one is JUST after starting the vacuum

off the shelf eats a dick! :P

Got CF?

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/xacoupe/My%20SV650/2011-10-04083328.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/xacoupe/My%20SV650/2011-10-04083336.jpg

I'm so happy with how this came out. The only voids in it are just near the screw hole, so maybe on the next one i will put a little cross cut in the CF near there to allow it to pull down better (i also put some extra little pieces of CF on there to re-enforce it, so i'll do that again)

Only other problem is that my peel ply stuck to the CF part a bit. i think i might use a couple of layers of it next time.

xa-mont

i ended up getting the peel ply off the back, and got it trimmed up. It actually fits on quite well with no pins on the back. I will play around with this one and using some sticky closed cell foam on the back to make sure it doesn't rub on anything.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/xacoupe/My%20SV650/2011-10-04174347.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/xacoupe/My%20SV650/2011-10-04174337.jpg

1 corner cracked off when i was removing the peel ply (was really stuck on).

Some lessons learned for side cover version 2.

1. use some resin with silica to thicken it for the first coat and let it tack up properly before laying carbon (there are a lot of bits that have just enough resin for the carbon, which is good for weight, but not so good for prettyness.)

2. 3 layers of carbon would be a good idea, it is a little see-through in some bits.

3. i will cut a cross over the mounting point on the main carbon bits and place some reenforcing on the back of it.

4. a couple of layers of peel ply would be a good idea.
