Hey folks, long time no posty. Been busy as but all is well. My mates and I have decided to ride down to the Island for the GP so unless I'm ridding the chook chaser (and want to vibrate my scrotum up into my anus) I had better get the 12r back on the road. The roller is back together but as you can see a whole lot is left to be done with not a lot of time.

Still need a tail and reset the exhaust. I used to use tail lift brackets but that is so 2005. I've modded the sub frame to get the look right but now need to do a new seat and tail piece.

I'm detouring from my original headlight idea so will be flogging that and a couple other parts in the trade section. Keep the final look under wraps at the moment. Everyone likes a surprise... I hope.

Custom triple set by yours truly. They still need a good polish but for now they are set.

Like I said the exhaust needs a rework - just a longer bit of pipe with a bend in it will fix that.

PC wheels and brakes came up pretty good I think :D

Progess update time. Chain and sprockets fitted, risers fitted but found a problem with the triple set thats going to need a little more machining. :( No drama really but because I don't have access to a mill anymore (at least one with a rotating bed) I'm going to have to pay for this to be done in the short time I have. I have almost every part I need now (or at least in the mail) to get this puppy done so touch wood I'm on track for September rego.

Most importantly tho I got the old girl running again. Fired up almost straight away after sitting in storage for over a year. Gotta love EFI :D

Anyway working on custom tail piece. I was going to carve one from foam but then I remembered I suck at arts'n'crafts so decided to model it up in 3D with the subframe and then build it like you would a model airplane - cut it into slices print it out in cardboard and build it from there.

Here's where I am. Comments?

Hope to get it cracking this week.

Nice work Pete, I love them triples mate, are you going to fill the void in at the front lower part of tank with anything?? GSG make some nice frame cover for the ZX12, but there over 300 squid..

Hey Gitzy - thats a bit rich for a couple bits of carbon. Looks the goods tho. Might fab something up myself but no plans at this stage. I'm going for a minimal look so the less plastic the better but I'll see how messy the front end ends up looking.

Hey Wacky, I use Solidworks, I've been using it for about 5 years now. Its a pretty good package, powerful but quick and easy to learn and use.

Lovin the look of that tail pete! Way cool!

zx12argh
24-08-2010, 12:01 AM
I know it doesn't look like much but the tail is taking shape. Got this far tonight. Tomorrow I'll give it a skin of tape to give it its curves then work it from there. All up its taken about 9 hours to get to here including design time. Learnt a few ways of speeding up the process so if I ever do this again it'll be a lot easier.

I'll put $20 on the fact that something will fall off.

HD foam would have been a lot quicker Pete. A lot messier as well, but definitely quicker. That's your engineering background coming out there hey?

zx12argh
24-08-2010, 10:29 AM
Its about time that degree started paying off ;)
I would have used the HD foam Si but I couldn't find it cheap enough. The local suppliers were charging for the stuff like it was gold. So far the total cost for the tail piece is just $20 and my time :D

i went the foam route with the rg tail i tried to do
i think the cardboard way of building up the layers would have its merits

i got so fucking sick of foam LOL

i guess if you are 100% confident with the shape at the end you need from the models the cardboard's the way to go
depends how much shaping you want to be doing towards the end eh?

think its looking great mr zx12, smash it out already :D

lol - I've actually hit other riders with bits that have fallen off my bike.

I've filled in the gaps with Tape, the next step is to cover it in a coat of resin to give me a solid base to work off. After that I'll cover it in a thin coat of plaster to fill in the gaps and dips and build the final surface that I'll fibreglass over.

Got a few layers of glass on the tail, it's coming along well but needs a lot more work. Bars and controls are all sorted and I've shortened the wiring loom. I've replaced the stock master cylinder with a later model GSXR version for a cleaner look on the bars. Hopefully my headlight and indicators will arrive early next week so I can get that on. Most of the pieces are coming together well. I'm also waiting on my RFID components so I can get cracking on the keyless start.

I'm worried the end result will be a little rough in the short term but if I can get through rego then I'll clean it up in the couple weeks before the Island. I'll upload more photos tomorrow, hopefully will have the tail done.

Yeah - new plan. The tail piece isn't working out as planned. I'm thinking a new simpler tail out of heat formed acrylic. Something like this.

Can I take a wild guess at the cardboard and tape leaving a mad prune like surface? Might be worth trying again in foam mate, but I guess time is short hey?

zx12argh
30-08-2010, 03:11 PM
That was just me fucking around with cardboard but yeah Si your right. This time I'm going to use an aluminium sheet as a template. This tailpiece is going to be dead simple and rely on my using a stainless ecu box and tail tidy to keep things neat. The other tailpiece would have worked well if I wanted a surf board...

zx12argh
08-09-2010, 02:00 PM
So I figured my tail was looking like shit so started again. Used a basic form for a simple tail. Worked a seat base out of the same shape as well. Needs to be finished but I'm pretty happy with the shape and lines.

Cheers guys, heaps of work going on behind the scenes to make this bike happen. Not a lot of time to get things shot and uploaded here. Trying to keep a record of the progress tho.

Thats pretty much stock rake Fimp (within .5mm). Exhaust goes on this weekend and hopefully get a chance to finish the body work as well.

zx12argh
10-09-2010, 06:15 PM
The seat is almost done - just needs a shaping and a covering. no time tho cause the bike is about to go into the van and off to get the exhaust sorted. Took a minute to mock everything up to get a good look and I think its really coming together. The photos don't really do it justice. This bike looks fat. Opinions welcome ;)

After a week of busting my balls in the garage I've finished and rego'd the 12r. A huge shout out to the following people for which their help this wouldn't have happened.

Rob (Kroosn) and Turlough for constantly being on my case to get this finished and for the help in the shed. A special mention to Rob's dad who got me the road worthy... ;)
My machinists Mike, Brian & Don.
Joe (Crazymofo) for the sweet laser cutting.
Rus (Sharky) for the idiot lights.
Big thanks to Si for providing this forum. The community wouldn't be what it is without you mate. Cheers!

I've still got heaps to do but its now ride-able and street legal (ish).

Good luck with the run to PI next month Pete

Thanks guys. Yeah Rich, the mufflers are what I had lying around and are on the top of the list along with the seat to get some professional treatment. I'm thinking similar style but a couple of stubby carbon cans terminating just after the swing arm. Don't hold your breath for this year tho...
