View Full Version : Why Shouldn't I Buy a Buell ?????

OK this is your chance to flame away and to save me from the perils of the HD motor. But before you do the Buell Ulysses XB12XT is the current choice as a two up distance tourer (first trip Brisbane to Melbourne) and trying to meet my requirements this is what I have come up with. Here are the guidelines & must haves :-

1. Must be V-twin (have never owned one, got to get it out of my system) NO cruisers !

2. Factory panniers or has a Givi pannier system available in Australia

3. Light & sporty for those roads along along the way. Around the 200kgs is enough because with 2 people & luggage it all ads up

4. Relative upright seating position with factory screen to take the extra wind load off the pillion

5. Budget around $12,000

Did I mention that it's got factory heated grips ?

I love Buells. So i won't say, don't get one....but.....
If you were to change the V-twin,to a Boxer twin, It would be fuckin hard to be a BMW1150GS Adv!!!
Best bike i ever had,for those things your lookin for.
I could do 1200+ks a day on it,get off at the end, have a shower and go clubbing!!It was more comfy than my car!!!
If you could stretch the budget abit more,1200GS.

Just get a V-twin later.

You should buy a Buell Mono..

Old man bought a XB9 Lightening City X in 2005ish. Brand spankers.. top bike, top engine, plenty of grunt even though there numbers aren't real high on paper.. Oooh that ZTL rotor was awesome, build quality was superb, excellent riding position.. beautiful note with an exhaust.

You won't be dissapointed mate, and hey your hands will be warm too.

Aren't they a rotax moteur?

12000 seems a bit steep. New buells were less than that when they were closing buell down a year or so ago.

Just ride it First Mono, two up on an extented test if you can or rent one for the weekend if available..then you will know for sure..

I test rode the Ulysses back to back with the 1200GS a few years back. The Buell was awesome. In comparison the Beemer was crap. Didn't take them off road though, so can't comment on that.

The only problem I see with owning a Buell in the long haul is parts availability. The engine parts will be OK (they're HD), but other running gear bits may become unobtainable.

For the same money though, you could probably get a brand new V-Strom.

A mate has a Ulysses with a Drummer pipe fitted and loves it. He's done at least two trips from near Dalby to Phillip Island on it. Previous bike was an 03 R1 and I've never heard him say a bad word about the Buell. I've not ridden it so can't say what it's like. As a touring bike I think it's comfy enough but the fuel range is nothing special, about 280km he reckons.

you could get a really nice TLS for 12 grand, would be much less vibey than the buel for touring

Wouldn't a VTR1000 with panniers tick all of those boxes and leave some change for tyres? fuel range could be a problem though

That is my other choice ,it's just the v strom is so magna.
Still can get a new one 11999 with 100ks on the clock, and can be taken on dirt short cuts.

why shouldn't I buy a buell?

Because for a few K more you can get a Triumph Tiger 1050.

Bris to Melb is a serious trip mate. My only advice (from my experience on the strom) is to test ride at highway speeds before buying. Buffeting is a real PITA, and something you'll either get, or you won't. There are aftermarket brackets that fix the problem (if you have it), but a little research will make the trip far more comfortable in the long run.

As for the potential sore wrist, a throttle rocker fixes that right up. By the time you're starting to feel aches, it's probably time to pull over anyway

As an ex owner of an XB12S in 2007, I would say not for distance work.

As a back road scratcher, they are a lot of fun !

For reliability nope.

They shake and vibe like hell even on tickover !!
The vibes on long distance stuff will make ya parts numb.
I hope the seat is better padded than the XB12S cos it made my crutch ache ! :(

You`ll need a new tool kit for the garage because they arent metric fastners on it anywhere.

Great bikes, masses of fun and hooning.
But as a tourer no way hose.

I had an XB9R for a while and know a heap of guys with XB12X, they all love em.

No speed machine but the X has a great seat, a mate just went from SQ to Cairns and back and didn't have a bad thing to say about it.

I bought a new Tiger last year and hated it. The standard suspension is rubbish (even worse when ******** get their hands on it), the wind noise of the screen was deafening and after coming off a 1050 Speed Triple I was disgusted what they did to a great engine(felt gutless). Also couldn't see a fucking thing when doing wheelies because the fairing sits out a metre from the bars and is impossible to see over [:p]

That was one bike I just could not get along with but hey, maybe I'm just special [^]

Guys you had me sold at my last post and that was 24 hours ago. Since then a lot has happened. The deal has been done ! Driven to Sydney & back. Picked up my first ever V-twin. I was looking for an all rounder. I know that they are definitely not the most powerfull tool in the shed , however there is already a B King in the shed for kicks. But back to the tourer, didn't want something with too much fat on the bone, not knocking FJRs and GTRs etc, they have their place and one day might go down that road. But for now once the luggage is removed from the Buell you could even slip in the odd track day or do the NFR day ride and still mix it up two up because the pillion seat will always be taken. So if all goes well this will be an interesting little venture and hopefully with no tears, but after 55 bikes including 11 GSXRs, just had to do something a little different.

So here she is....a 2010 XB12XT, 2600ks, factory Pirelli Angels, just couldn't pass it up at the price and I have never been known for buying something main stream. Fightered my third Blade back in '98 so i'm used to strange looks [:0]

So thanks for the comments from everyone and the tips from the experienced Buell owners (drip tray ready) :D

See you at the MOTO GP

Had a 03 XB9R Great bike to ride but you need to train yourself not to expect alot from the engine. It flat out wont rev and the limiter cuts in early. On tight stuff you can find yourself never feeling like your in the right gear.
Also in summer in traffic it'll bake your nuts.

I havent ridden a rotax powered one though and if you were paying anything around 10 it'd want to have everything and be mint.

HOS

Yes I must admit that during the summer the cooling fan that cools the rear cylinder never stopped after the 1st mile or two.
Mind you it was brand spankers ;)

I found a very different riding style to Jap multi cyl bikes I`ve had all my life.

On the Buell you keep it in top gear, the throttle wide open and don`t slow down for bends [:p] [:o)]

Worked for me.

With low weight, monster torque in the 1200, massive spensions, ooje chunky forks, low CofG, short ass wheelbase and Pirrelli ultra sticky rubbers on it, they are a full-on idiot bike !!!

Leave ya brain on the kitchen table when you go out.

If you have never ridden the 1200, do so if ya get the chance ;)
