Something different..
I thought I'd share some images of billet escape hatches we've been doing for some Australian navy ships.
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1279134743.jpg

The existing cast ally ones just arent cutting it.
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1279123887.jpg

They start out as a 73kg block & end up as a 17kg part.
That's a case of beer worth of swarf in every one we do :D

Seems too nice to cover in anti radar grey paint doesn't it ?

Nothing anti-radar about it mate, it is just regular 2 pack paint, I use it all the time at sea (well I used to use it all the time, my boys do now).

Should make them a shit load lighter though, good for fire fighting maybe not so good for actual fires though.

I'm surprised we are using alluminium after what happened on Westralia.

Just calling the paint what I was told. Maybe you could save weight by not applying the paint with a spatula, fuck its thick. If it were up to me I would have made them lighter ( more beer money for me[8D]).
What else do you reckon they could be make from ?

Yeah, but it kills their fire rating ;)

badly corroded after just 2 yrs service & if you look at the first pic you'll see where the arms like to snap.
The one in the pic is the best of them.

6000 or 7000 series Al.?
You could make them out of Ti to make them lighter, the Navi is paying so it should be fine:D

Nice work guys, how many are you making? Are you doing just one ship or have you got the whole fleet to do....

Please tell me you put BXP on it somewhere....

I don't know a great deal about metals Ben but something more fire proof than ally would be good I would imagine, what were the instructions you were given? Just make something better or make it out of ally?

Oh and that looks like devron (non-skid paint) and it it is a motherfucker to get off and it goes on real thick.

5083 Better strength than 6000 & better corrosion resistance than 7000.
Even the Navy couldnt afford to make them out of Ti.
No BXP unfortunately.

If you're talking about those big crosses in the deck Ivan Red is correct, they are for tie downs and chains, they have these things on the end of them we call elephants feet because that is what the look like don't know what the proper name is but they pull into one of the corners of those crosses (we call those crows feet) and take the load of whatever you're lashing down.

Get a new recycler Ben,you should be getting at least 2 cartons of TED's for that much swarf.I'm gettin 2.05/kg up here for clean extruded offcuts and swarf,56kg = 3 slabs from Dan Murphy's.

EXBEN
16-07-2010, 09:23 AM
Fuck $2.05 thats good, we get $1.35/kg for solid & $0.55c/kg for swarf. That's typical of Sydney tho...:(

Ben here in country Vic were the fokes are dumb were getting $1.85 K and you'd prob do better with a regular deal of clean billet solid/swarf.

I/m not an expert on ship fires, but I'm guessing when the aloyminum starts melting the humans are already rendered down?
