I mostly lurk here for motivation and inspiration. I figured I might as well post up my pile of parts. Love the site, there are limited options for decent 'fighter sites in the US unfortunately.

So here is my pile.

I picked up an ex-trackbike, with a clean title, for a decent price. Not the prettiest but I'll dump most of the bodywork so not much of a concern there

and it will get worse before it gets better but here it is currently

I'm waiting on longer clutch and throttle cables. I already have longer brake lines, just need to get them fitted and routed. We've had a cold snap recently and it's just too cold to comfortably work in the garage so I probably wont do much for at least the next week. I'll try to update this thread as I go forward.

here is a shot from the saddle. You can see how tight the throttle cables are. I think with the airbox and tank back on the bike it would have just barely reached, but I didn't like how tight it was. I ordered some +5" cables for it that should fit much better.

I had my 03 gixxer fighter and used the standard throttel cabalels fitted and had no troubles as did Stevo another member form townsville, but the longer cables would make life easer

It's hard to tell just how dirty the rims when I go the bike. The previous owner pretty much never cleaned them. They had left over adhesive from at least 3 different sets of wheel weights, and lots of duct tape residue from taping said weights down.

if you look close you can see some of the dirt here

http://www.cjvcook.com/images/fighter/progress/1.jpg

here they are now, which is as good as they're gonna get.

the transport home from the purchase was in the rain, and the rotors grew a wonderful rusty look.

Those rotors will clean up as soon as you use them again mate. Just make sure there's not too much shit on there to chew through your pads.

if you compare my last two pictures I already cleaned them. i know 99% of it would have rubbed off quickly with the first use, but I'm pretty anal rententive about things. If I'm going to break the bike down I might as well do my best.

Ok, just about finished now. just need to double check all my bolts, do some safety wiring on it, and hit the streets. Bit thanks to ASF for giving me a place to lurk and get ideas!!!

You've done a great job there Chris, it's come up nice and tidy. Have you thought of shortening the muffler? You can't beat a shorty can.

Vcook
01-05-2007, 01:13 AM
I have thought of shortening it, for 2 reasons:

1. shorty cans look nice
2. in its previous life as a trackbike it was lowsided on the can side and the lower edge of the carbon fiber is chewed. I think I'll take about 5 inches off it, removing it from the bottom.

The only fear I have is it might become too loud.

Iceman

There's no such thing as too loud! lol.

I had to make a baffle for my first shorty can, coz we gutted it as well. When I first started the bike in the shed, everything was vibrating, there was tools falling of benchs, but it was too fuck'n loud.

Noice work Chris - but shorten that can now! (http://www.streetfighters.com.au/ASF_HT_shor_can.asp)

Are you running a remote ignition?

Mate looks great. Did you do the paint work yourself?
If I had to change anything (apart from that can;)) it would be paint your radiator and oil cooler black and change your head light... its just not right... its very WWII...
Unless of course you wanted the cyclops look [:p]

Other then that clean and tidy - top stuff.

Vcook

I should clarify some items. I did not do the paint, I paid a friend to do it and it came out ace. The pictures don't do it justice.

I had planned to paint the radiator ends at least black but ran out of time, riding season is here. I figure this leaves me something to do next winter (along with powdercoating anything still silver)

as for the headlight I had planned to use 2 of those, ala speed triple, but in my haste I chose to mount one as it was sooooo easy to mount just one. I kind of like the single look but I think I need to move to a 7" headlamp. Regardless, it's legal for now!!

deep paint, you can clearly see all the clouds in the sky, it's like a mirror.

Looks great, just need to sort the Head Light. I like the single round light, bu8t that one just doesn't seem to blend in with the rest of the bike

Paint looks nice n glassy

Looks nice Vcook - have you thought about pissing off the front-mounted damper & getting an aftermarket top mount one to clean up the front end a bit more?
And yeah I'd black out the rad & bottom yoke, but as you say that gives you something to do NEXT winter...!!!!
Good job.

Vcook

I have thought about getting the harris mount for my ohlins damper, allowing me to mount in front of the tank 916 style but they're not cheap. For sake of the budget that part will have to hold off. Here is my to do list

1. cut down can (and maybe debadge it)
2. change oil
3. consider new headlight options, leaning towards a 7" single

I Like it mate. Nice work. I think the one light is cool too - the head on shot does it for me. Being a deviant, I'd cut a V shape in black adhesive vinyl and stick it into the top of your light to give it less of a "surprised" look .

I think the general problem is the amount of weight at the back and the lack of weight at the front, making the light look a little wimpy. Get around that by cutting the can down and reducing the size of the back end, make all the silver parts black (as already stated) and if it was me, take the gold parts into be coated black as well and coat the engine cases black. That thing would look stealth as. Nice ride mate.

shorter is better. Didnt want to go too short as I didnt want it to be crazy loud.
