View Full Version : Who owns a trail bike?

Large

A mate just purchased a '10 YZ250FSE. Nice bike but it lacks a bit of grunt. Thinking about getting a CR/YZ/RM/KX 250 (or 500 if I can find one) probably about 2002-2006 model.

I mostly want to do dirt drags and a widowmaker we're going to build at the YZ250FSE owners place.

What have you got?

What can you recommend?

What to look out for?

I had a 2001 Husaberg FC501 for a while, had bucketloads of power.
I am a pretty big bloke & I struggled keeping the front down.
The older ones are a bit temperamental anything younger than a 2005 is good.

Had a KX 250 as well nice bike to chuck around.

Had a few others.

large you already have a good big bore dirt bike, just get a 2nd set of rims made up for the ttr..

Large
19-05-2010, 06:48 PM
Nah it's got huge power but it's way too heavy to pick up all day and the widowmaker may have turns/berms.

I just want to show the n0Ob that 2 smokers are better than 4 strokers.

Anyone got a Maico 700?

If you want it for the drags I would go for a CR500, or even one of these!!

I have a 1974 TS185 - and a 1979 model as well.
Both are old rusty and probably useless.
I Don't know why, but I don't like any of the new shiney shit. so I'm pretty keen to get my hands on a 450 or the likes early 90's.

if I went out spending a shit load of cash I reckon I'd give one of these a go..

Mate, you're to big of a unit to even consider anything below 500cc. If you're after a 500 smoker, go for a KX over a CR, the Kwak has a powervalve so they're a lot more tractable off WOT.
Yam WR 500 would be an option if you can find one.
I think Jeffery Honda in Ferntree Gully are importing the Service Honda 2/5 now. [:p]
Or a Husaberg 650 for the ultimate thumper, very light & the most horsepower (but not torque) of any mass produced sickfiddy single - simply awesome to ride.

I bought a CR250 off the bay of gay. Pick it up tomorrow and I'll let you know how it goes (It's gotta be fastewr than a 4 stroke 250)

I've got a 00 yz250 with a 286 kit, fmf gold and some fly wheel weight on it and luuuvvvvve it, also recently bought a 05 wr450 for some high cuntry touring and to motard,
the 2 smoker is just as fast if not faster in a drag but lack the out right top speed, i cannot EVA make it back to the car on a ride on the 2 smoker on fuel..

Looks like I actually bought a CR85 big wheel with CR250 stickers -

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1275260552.jpg

It turns out that some people's idea of "mechanically excellent" is "it hasn't broken yet so I'll keep fanging it"

Luckily the previous owner had hardly used it and it came with its original spares kit, so I've replced the piston/rings/trans oil and put on a new chain and sprockets. Now it really is scary fast. Anyone who reckons I needed a 500 is fucking crazy.

Took it for a run up the bush, not much fun getting up a hill that the TTR managed quite easily, but great fun on the loose sandy stuff.

good choice in bike large.. the 2 stroke likes a really good rear tyre
for best grip and best roosts.. once there half worn its just wheel spin.. if you decide you want to make it a 500 let me know and i will put you on to a guy who makes the required parts for the frame to do it..
put some heavier springs front and rear to suit rider and it will handle so much better.. a full white plastics kit for these is only about $220 if you get sick of the red..
