Been lurking on the forums for too long now so its time to get my bike up here
Bought my 2000 zx9r about a year ago already naked but with little scented candles for headlights.
Ran alright but changed the headlight out and got some bar end mirrors and it stayed pretty much the same for a couple of months.
Always loved the ducati sport from Tron and didnt really like the balance of the ninja tail without the front fairings on so after much procrastination ordered a fibreglass tail from Airtech and got to it. Found the guy that made the LED tail lights for the Tron bike and he wanted 450ish US for the standard ducati kit or 550 for a custom kit. Found where he bought his LED arrays from and ordered straight from them for 110
Took about 3 months for the tail to arrive but the workmanship on it is amazing. Highly recommend their products.
Tail arrived while I was away at work so got the missus to sit it on the back and send me a photo to keep me busy scheming till i got home.
Ripped the old tail off as soon as i got home.
Then it was out with the good ol angle grinder
She sat looking very naked for a while till a plan was formulated.
Did a test run with the lights to keep the motivation up.
couldnt come up with a good idea for mounting the tail for ages till a buddy came over and suggested that since the cross member on the subframe had mounting holes for the original seat just chop that up and stick it to the new tail so did a little test fit and it worked out sweet. two bolts in the seat area and the old seat base to support the rear/hump.
Managed to keep everything in pretty much its factory spot apart from the reg. Havent had any heat issues as yet but i might drill some breather holes at the rear of the tail baseplate to get some airflow through there.
Decided to go with a new colour instead of the factory green so chose Midnight Pearl. Its a honda colour from the NSX / s2000. Its just a rattle can job and havent cut and polished it yet but it turned out ok apart from the orange peel on the clear coat. Left all the little dents in the tank for some extra street cred
When I was doing all the test fitting for the tail i had already pulled the tank off and sanded it back and primed it. This of course meant taking out the rubber grommets for the tank mounting points which meant when i had it all done ready to put back together everything was off by about 20mm. many beers later and some left over sponge padding from the seat pad and all was well. the seating position is a bit lower than the standard seat and the sponge seat pad is a lot grippier so not as easy to change positions but Im loving the extra support from the hump.
Still need to set up the magnet for the acewell speedo. It was on the list but I havent ridden her for almost 6 weeks now so as soon as she was all buttoned up it was out for a ride
Ive got a Danmoto xg1 exhaust in the shed too and im tossing up which one ill go with. the danmoto with the baffles in sounds better than the stubby, not as boomy, but the bike loses some top end. take the baffles out and it screams but im sure the local constabulary will start hunting me down.
Also looking at different headlight setup. Vrod? mt07? Id love a huge moto headlight but not for 500 US
