    the Vmax Lives.....

Okay so I know I've been harping on about "the vmax"
but finally I am going to get it back from the mechanics workshop
the engine has been fixed and just to recap here is what is done and what is planned.......

    Things done so far:
    • Goodridge brake hoses for front brakes
    • R1 calipers and master cylinder (gold spots)
    • Cam Sprockets have been slotted and the Cams dialled in
    • Heads and Carb Intakes have been flowed
    • solid engine mounts
    • new barnett clutch
    • total engine rebuild
    • crank welded and balanced
    • stainless engine bolt kit
    • 7/8 to 1" fat crosser bars
    • lots of black paint work done
    • Engine cases powder coated satin black
    • New battery

shit to do when sanity and cash return:

    • YZF 750 front end transplant including 6 pot calipers
    • brace swing arm
    • change swingarm spacers to allow 180 back tyre
    • new headlights
    • frame brace
    • YZF master cylinder for clutch and goodridge hoses
    • flat slides
    • shorten tail piece
    • rearsets

    and the long awaited pictures

so go on then - let me know what you think

    so will take pictures then.

And once again I will repeat..... the tail piece has to go, so please don't bag my for the crappy duck tail.[)]
It's standard Yam at the mo'
thinking about shortening the tail to match the length of the pillion seat.
    something like this......

Okay so next installment of the Vmax Saga

When we left off I had the bike the sun was shining and the world was good.

Took the Vmax for a thrash and found that it was running on 3 cylinders
    joy
couldn't find the problem and the dyno jet kit was making it run so rich I smelled like a servo when I pulled up anywhere. So back to the workshop and start looking
tried everything and eventually found that the plugs were wrong and the jetting out

So everythign back together and she goes great.
    Next job was the tailpiece
    utterly horrible

so found myself with a sunny day and having a smoke looking at the back end of the bike.
I thought the tail piece looked naff but the tail light had some merit in a funky kind of way. It looked a bit like the tail light in an RD 350 LC. Out came the mudguard and underskirt and a couple of holes and no reflector later - voila

    and in profile

so all in all I like it. Short and makes the back tire hang out, and was cheap as. Just dremeled the number plate hanger off the old mudguard liner and screwed the tail light to where the reflector was mounted. Looks just like a bought one
    [8D]

next was the fly screen that broken by some clown at a dealership letting the bike fall over.
    not happy jan
It had snapped the blade but the rest of the screen was fine.
I glued the screen back together and then bogged the cracks and sanded them back. I figured if your glueing a screen then either you're painting it or you're starting at glue. So fill sand and paint is the way.
    Looks like this now

I've trimmed the height by about 7cms and reshaped it a little, but when painted should give a sporty cafe racer type feel

next is going to be stripping back the donor YZF and getting the carbs off. 38mm flatslides are just what the doctor ordered.
And a seat recovering and foam trim job.
Or if I can find the right fork leg I will put the YZF 750 front end on. From there, a radiator transplant from the YZF and tidy up the handlebars.

Given I'm ending up with a lot of bits from the yzf and from the vmax, I'm considering building a second bike which has a yzf engine vmax forks and short saddle...... maybe

    Update on the tail conversion

So a piece of sage advice for the young and fool hardy.
If you do a conversion job and bolt everything to a plastic bit as a 'temporary' finish, then make the metal very quickly.

I had bolted the tail light to the plastic beaver tail......
several weeks later the beaver tail, tail light and number plate came adrift at around 110 and bounced all the way down the road.
    .....BOLLOX

so have now made a metal number plate holder and beaver tail out of 1.2mm plate mild steel, and it fits beautifully. Even took it for a blast and nothing fell. Just ahve to find some new indicators for the rear and fabricate a fender eliminator.

It was always going to be temporary.
It was always going to get done 'soon'
I was always going to make it happen.......

what is it they say about the best intentions of men?

It just came off sooner than I thought it would.
Still the steel plate version is incredibly strong and just needs tidying up.

next is the carb conversion and the back wheel.
need to get an xj900 diversion rear wheel

Oh yeah and have the dyno reports back form the mechanic.
Now getting 164bhp at the rear wheel.
the vboost is almost ineffective with the top end tuning job so when the carbs go on the vboost gets junked.
All it does now is cause the power to drop off rapidly when you close the throttle.

and if anyone wants to know how to make a brake mastercylinder perch out of 1.2mm steel plate then just drop me a line. It's a piece of piss for sure

Wouldn't mind seeing those dyno charts.......

    Neither would I!
I don't have the charts and possibly won't see them.
I know the bike rode well as standard and had the bike dyno'd ages ago in Sydney. It came in at 135bhp, 9bhp down on standard.
It pulled like a bastard and when the vboost kicked in turned into a banshee.

Now with the cams dialled in and a top end flow job/dynojet kit it feels like it pulls harder from all the way down with the top end of RPM feeling less asthmatic.

I would reckon that the bike in current state makes at least 9bhp more than the old bike before the rebuild, revs much more easily and gets to speed much quicker. If anybody has a spare dyno kicking around and wants to test the bike to prove me wrong I'm more than happy to drag it along and see what it is actually putting out.
(And again after the flat slides get fitted)

Took it out at the weekend against a friends ZRX1200 and it more than kept up.

Have found and paid for some new YZF750 forks so once they arrive the front end transplant can begin.
This should be a very interesting exercise if only in finding ou just how m,uch of the ineternet is BS!

okay so guess what finally found an XJ Diversion rear wheel in a breakers yard and cheap too
so now to get a new tyre fitted and work out spacers]
just working on cutting down a YZF belly pan to make a fat sporty look instead fo skinny cruiser
tail light conversion is finished and next is a 350LC head light graft
also managed to find some excellent bar end mirrors too
