Tuning individual cylinders (Updated 10_7_09)
Some of you may remember the AFR Tuner I fitted a while back.
Well I got an expansion unit for it some time ago that runs 4 wide band sensors and will self tune individual cylinders.
I've had a single sensor in the mid pipe for long enough and I can't imagine the fueling being any better than it is.
BUT... I'm told the difference is night and day by a mate that's done this to a few bikes in Germany.
I was also one of the ones that hassled Tamas (designer and builder of the AFR Tuner) into making it run 4 cylinders individually after seeing some custom tuning on some race bikes with Motec ECUs.
The short story .... You can have excellent A/F Ratio in the mid pipe but it can be any combination of rich/lean cylinders that give you the right average over all.
This expansion will custom map each cylinder while you ride.
Now all I need is a welding guru to weld the fittings on and wire this bad boy up.
I know it's a sickness but I'm really interested to see how much difference there is between cylinders.
Not sure it'll make more peak power (would be cool if it did) but the part throttle and mid range is where I expect to see improvment.
Will try and post some more "installation" photos as it progresses and some results.....

Woah, radical idea! Let us know how this actually works out mate as it's a new idea to me and I can't imagine your bike being out by much, if anything.

Alot of race boats do the same thing and most if not all our engine dyno's go out with the gear to check each pot.. The big horse power guys at summernats even go so far as to tune each exhaust temp so they are all the same...
Id like to see the AFR of each cylinder next to each other before you tune it and an after shot too...

Squaring up the heat on individual cylinders is normal practice in blown, injected or top-end naturally aspirated engines.

How many grams has that added to the beast Stocky?

Adds nearly 900 grams all up for the expansion unit, wiring, sensors, mounts etc.
Once all the cylinder offsets are stable I'll be able to go back to a single mid pipe sensor to monitor the tune.
Got the sensors mounted and it all going tonight.
Will go for a ride tomorrow and start the mapping......

How's the mapping going, have you felt the differents in the throttle as of yet mate?

Mapping is going good. There are huge differences between cylinders.
The difference isn't consistent across different rpm and throttle pos either so it's not just differences in injector outputs.
It's still getting better all the time as it maps more but I will admit it's redefined "good fueling" for me.
I thought the fueling was pretty good. This setup has taken it to another level.
The best part is that it's not about peak power or full throttle. It's the smaller openings and lower rpm when you are just fanging around that is soooooo much better.
There is just so much more grunt and clean acceleration it's mad.
