Thread: VFR 800, my first build

  1. #221
Set of 8th gen headers arrived, fits perfectly with the VFR400 setup. You can see why they went back to this design with the 8th gen, makes much more sense than the side rad setup.

Rads went on pretty easy, made up a couple of aluminium brackets and it was all good. I have heaps more space above the front cylinder bank now to fit the wiring in as well which is nice.

I also managed to leave a 120mm X 90mm space between the headers and the sump so I'll probably try to find a small oil cooler to fit in there.

EDIT: If anyone knows a mob who can would stock an oil cooler that size or could make a custom one, please let me know.

Nice work. I always wondered if the vfr400 rads would work.

Engine is finally getting some much needed love.

Still need to strip and polish the side cases.

    Happy Easter all!

Starting to come back together, got some more front end bits and pieces arriving after the holidays which should resolve a couple of the issues I was having.

Does anyone have a recommendation for rear shock rebuilds in Melbourne? I'm looking out for a used current gen ZX10 shock but failing that I'll need to get the 929 shock I have resprung and valved as it's way too soft.

Thanks, black was nice and easy but the red was a huge pain to get looking good. Took me a few sanded back coats but happy with the result now.

New forks arrived on Tuesday, yes they are conventional but should suit the VFR much better.

Added a new bit of kit to the collection today

So the subframe will be going together tomorrow. I also whipped up a rear hugger/chain guard out of a spare for the R1 and part of the original guard.

Welded up the subframe mounts, will grab some more pictures when there is a little more light so you can all shit on my first attempt at welding

Figured it was about time I treated this project seriously instead of rushing it and half assing things.

Super happy with my progress so far, I'm getting through it quicker and cleaner.

My plan is to get it done before November so I can attend the ride and make space for a mates cafe project which he needs help with.

    Tail-lights sorted

Picked up a box of Ducati S2R parts from which I scavenged bar risers and a front cowl.

Next on my list is extending the front wiring and figuring out where in the tail to mount all the components.

Thanks guys, any thoughts on front indicators? I was going to use bar ends that match the rear ones but I can't find any bar end mirrors that will work with them.

Also picked up some 4 pot Nissins of a ZX9R which fit perfectly and match the master cylinder reservoirs:

If you're chasing any VFR parts let me know as I've just bought the VFR that I had built for the Mrs a few years ago. I will be stripping it down and selling it as parts
