    04 R1 fighter build

So the Mrs has finally come to her senses a few months back and realised that the VFR lack power to be god fun. With the new front end I put in it handles and feels a million times better, but it lacks the punch of an inline 4 sports bike. We'll be selling the VFR but she started to keep an eye out for an 04 R1 at a good price and finally after a few months one came up that we wanted to go and check out. I wanted to reduce (crazy I know) the number of bikes to actually make some room first as it's getting a bit over-crowded

Pics are a few months old, but you get the picture, lol. The CBR250RR is pretty much done now so that will be selling soon and the GSXR600 has found a new home too.

Anyways, picked this baby up about a month ago off a guy who is your typical insurance statistic and the reason why premiums are so how. What do I mean...
    • R1 was his first bike, just waitied long enough till he could buy it.
    • Crashed the bike near his brothers house
    • had no gear on at the time of the crash
    • Lost the back end, panicked and took a handful of front brake and lost the front
    • Hurt his shoulder in the accident and is now 'Off' bikes
    • Had negotiated a higher excess to be able to get lower premium, meaning he didn't want to fork out the excess to repair. - His loss, our gain.
Inspected the bike and all the damage is purely cosmetic and a broken front fairing stay, so was a no brainer and loaded it onto the trailer

Finally had a chance this weekend to start stripping the bike down and removing the excess weight...

Damage was to the RHS of the bike

The Oggy knobs too the grunt of the slide so made sure to check the frame when we inspected the bike. All good, just a damaged knob

Also ame with a set of sexy pipes!!! Bonus!!!

    Started shedding the weight...

Will be at least a 6 month project, deadline from the Mrs is that it needs to be done before the wedding so we can have both the fighters on the day for pics. I can live with that....

    So let it begin.... again...

Good score! I guess that's the upside of idiots buying fast bikes.

there seems to be a fair bit of extra cables up the front end to run a couple of headlights, so will see what i end up doing here. might chop it up a bit and just fit a simple plug depending on the headlight we go for.

You've got plenty of room. Park the car outside...

Oh and great score. The upside being he didn't claim on insurance which makes you the winner!

So 2 months on and not much has happened. I promised this wouldn't be the fastest build. But I do have a deadline that this needs to be completed with paint for the wedding in July... so best get cracking.

I have been fortunate enough to be allowed into the shed of wonders at Ozzy's place, so no reason to delay now.

Subframe off, fairly happy with the minimal amount of wiring that Yamaha have in the subframe which is awesome news for me.

And good old Jesus holding up the new tail to be grafted on so we can get an idea of what it will look like...

This will be the approximate placement, which means that the subframe will be slightly extended (as they are a short unit) and some of the void underneat will be filled in with the undertail pipes

The tail is wider than the tank but I think we can make it work as the lines and angles of the tail match the tank. Once mounted then the handlebar and choice of headlight i think will tie it all in together.

On my K4 Gixxer the steering damper is at the bottom. With the headlight I used that actually worked better for me
