    Deseaming wheels

    OK so this is not a question about whether it's safe or not to deseam wheels it's about asking for help to deseam my wheels.

    I'm using old Bandit wheels on my build and want to get rid of the ugly seams running along the ID of the wheels cause they look shit.










    Problem is my compressor just isn't up to the job of running my die grinder and (at the moment anyway) only have small grinding wheels but no cutting tools to use.

    My query is has anybody got a big compressor that I can use to run my die grinder on so that I can do the wheels myself or can anybody suggest an alternative way to deseam them that doesn't require a big fuck off compressor. Failing that does anybody know anyone that would be prepared to do the work for me. I live on the outer East of Melbourne by the way. Cheers people.

    Never of thought of removing them, they are a bit shit aren't they?

    I've got an 11 or 12 CFM compressor that runs my die grinder no worries, you're welcome to drop by & use that, I'm in Altona North though.

    I use a carbide burr for removing bulk metal, heaps better than a stone. This one:

    Bit $$$, but they'll last forever if they're looked after.

    That rib/seam is the parting line of the casting & is critical to the strength of the wheel. If you take the rib right off, the wheel will probly crack in half.
    Just bite the bullet & get some spoked wheels for it.

    I ran deseamed ZXR 750 H1 wheels on my old GSX for years with no problems. I've heard this debate go on for years mate with differing points of view but as I say I ran my old bike with deseamed wheels for years and know many people who have too with no probs. I'm hoping that after deseaming if there's 5mm or more of metal left then I should be OK and if not Bandit wheels aren't that expensive.

    I had a thought that a jigsaw or airsaw with a metal blade might be the quickest way to get ride of a lot of metal, then a cleanup with the burr or stone... But yeah, offers there if you want.

    I use them as educational tools Trav, it's easier to show stupid/lebo/wog/banditrod people the difference between wheels & rims when they can be separated.
    If they still don't get it, a rear hub to the head helps clear things up.

    I've had loads of mates that have deseamed GSXR wheels without any issues, ....but spokes would look cool hey?

    OK so back to thgis thorny old debate. For all the metallurgists out there I measured the thickness of my wheel rims. The back wheel is 6mm thick and the front is 5mm thick. I'm thinking that these thicknesses are OK to go ahead and remove those yucky seams unless you want to donate some spoked hubs TK?

    De-seamed GSXR wheels were trendy back in the 90's/early 2000's - didn't hear of them falling apart regularly. I'd do it on 90's wheels. I however wouldn't do it on something like a current model-ish GSXR/ZX/CBR or Triumph 675 wheel... (incidentally, the 675 wheels are the lightest OEM wheels on the face of the planet - the R6 wheela are only s fraction heavier on the front, and a half kilo or so on the back).
    ZX10s had collapsey wheels from factory when they first came out...
