I did a ride day at Marulan the other day,and there was a junior session for kids on these type of bikes.
Wayne Gardner was out there with his kids.
Pity you don't live closer to that track, coz it looks like they'll be running a junior session at each bike day they do now.

honda 150 is quite popular, big and heavy tho, however, if your boys has expereince riding bikes he'll be fine.

    the juniour rules are 13 y.o 80cc 2 stroke or 160cc 4 stroke.
IIRC theres also a class for under 13's that are on 110cc 4 strokes or 50cc 2 strokes.

morowaki 80's are good things and are cheap as well, tweaked up cr80 honda motors make em go nice.

    cheers.joe.

edit:just got this from the motorcycle sportsmen website, they follow MA rules so this should be right accross the board...

The Motorcycle Sportsmen of Qld encourage Juniors to participate at all of the club's eligible road race events. Club coaches such as Leo Cash, Dave Fuller and Craig Alick provide their expertise and experience to ensure that a Junior competitors step into the world of bitumen racing is safe and fun!

Novice Juniors are offered the opportunity to undertake the Motorcycling Australia Junior "Kick Start" program which provides a formal coaching outline for beginners within our sport. This program is conducted by qualified coaches who donate their time to ensure that the Juniors have the best possible start when finally taking to the bitumen for the first time.

Juniors are required to undertake this program prior to being permitted to compete or obtain a Motorcycling Australia Competition licence.

Safety is of course the first priority in all racing, especially with Junior competition. With this in mind, if you are not considered ready by the coach conducting your Kick Start training, you will not be signed off until they are confident that you can safely handle your motorcycle and have a suitable understanding of the rules involved in our sport. There is no way to short cut this process, it is a mandatory step into road racing.

Classes of Junior competition promoted by the Motorcycle Sportsmen include:
    a) 7 to under 10 up to 50cc automatic,
    b) 9 to under 13 up to 50cc manual,
    c) 9 to under 13 up to 70cc manual,
    d) 13 to under 16 up to 85cc 2-stroke or 160cc 4-stroke manual,
    e) 14 and above 125cc Grand Prix,

If you would like any further information about getting started, would like to attend a practice night and do your Kick Start program or already have an MA licence for another racing discipline and would like to give road racing a go, please give us a call or email and we'll be only too happy to help.

    nothing wrong with pocketbikes

i have nephews who started out on them at age 8, them water cooled ones do up to 100 clicks!!

mike jones who is now kicking arse on the 600's was a former pocketbiker.

my advice is to get him on one of the water cooled ones for the next 2 years. then get him a morawaki 50, change it to a 70/80cc when he eligiable.

either that or keep him to the flat track till he is 13, then let him loose on a suitable roadbike.

    cheers.joe.
