Just incase you guys thought I'd given up, here's a progress report.
USD frontend is done just awaiting discs.
R1 ducktail is nearly done, needs more paint and undertray made.
Turbo is coming along slowly, manifold is done, plenum nearly done, intercooler is starting to take shape. I have most of the parts I need. All I need now is the time (and knowledge) to put it all together. lol

Intercooler will be mounted at the front above the turbo. As for the tail, it's a fibre glass racing unit so it had no lights, I just bought the coolest looking one I could find and afford at the time.

looks sweet..

What fuel system you running ? is the GS500 injected stock ? coz isnt carbie turbo like,, doesnt work unless you have specific carbies designed for turbo use ? either way, looks great so far..

Is the tail for a 2002 R1 ? looks the same as the back end of mine (which im building up)

27-01-2007, 03:30 PM
:)Should be able to chuck a leg b4 it gets to 4th gear[:0]lotsa hard work[8)]memba when ya used ta build ya own crackers afta they became illegal[:o)]sorry mate:Dmake sure ya get it on video[8D]

The tail is a 99 R1 race glass item modified to take the 02 R1 tail light

hmmmnz
27-01-2007, 07:56 PM
are you sticking larger carbs in there or are you gunna try and rejet??
that bad boy is going to have to have massive jets at 7 psi, i wouldnt go any higher boost than that with stock compression,
you may have to put a small spacer under the head to try and drop the compression slightly,
looks like a good mission :D keep it up ice man

27-01-2007, 09:23 PM
Its all good. I am starting to like this project dude.I honestly didnt think u would get this far....... Can get ya carbs boost referenced with no major drama at all. As for your intercooler... What size is the actual core, it looks stock skyline to me? I have done so much research into turbos on bikes in the last 6 months, I agree with Hmmmnz, anything over 6-7 lb and you are gunna have a hand grenade.Mad Mundy says what everyone is thinking but ya wouldnt learn if ya didnt try. Wait til my turbo blows up... and it will....

If you cant get enough fuel with your carbs you might be able to rig up some cold start injectors from a car to come on with boost. Some auto parts stores here in the states sell switches that are boost activated. You can set them 0-15psi. and once your boost is reached the supply 12v signal to whatever you want. What have you done to the internals? honestly 2psi would give you a good jump up, 14 would probably pop something. You dont want to run lean and grenade all your hard work.

Iceman
28-01-2007, 07:59 AM
Ok, it seems the concensis is that 7psi is too much, I'll start of small and work my way up then. The carbs will be re-jetted and pressurized. I have a peirberg electric fuel pump and a rising rate pressure regulator to deliver the fuel.

I am not planning to lower the compression as the motor has done 90k without a rebuild so it's low enough already.

The intercooler was a stock skyline item which I have cut down from 15 to 10 rows, and am in the process of making new end tanks for.

Seeing as I know fuck all about bike engines, let alone turbo charging, I am just making most of this shit up as I go along. Luckily there is a wealth of knowledge within our little community, so hopefully I'll get by with the help of you guys.

Worst case senario I'll have to ride the RF to Dubbo, cause I've blown the GS into a million pieces. lol.

Have you thought about going full injection? Evad turned me onto the Megasquirt injection systems the other day, and I'm definitely going down this route.

http://www.megamanual.com/
http://www.msefi.com/

Evad's actually done a 650 twin using this system, you should talk to him about it, transferring his setup to your bike would be quite easy.

Reading some of the success stories these things really work.

you have to register to access the threads, but well worth it, he's done a damned nice job on it. He's our new home-brew injection Guru.

Geez, what a worst case scenario, a turbo 500, or a rip snorting RF9, you poor bastard, I feel for you, I really do ....................not.

:D :D

speeddemon
28-01-2007, 10:49 AM
Good luck on the turbo option (stick with reliable boost mate), but I would build up the RF as well - its fricken nice with no fairing (and no huge arse end) and with 1100 barrels plenty of fun to be had. Remember that engine was the best of Suzuki engineering at the time. Fuck - if you dont I will if I can get hold of one for the right price.

Fingers crossed.

Hey Ice, welcom to the dark side :D....
What is the spacing between your carbs?
If you have a look on the msefi.com site under injecctors, fuel and air supply
http://msefi.com/viewtopic.php?t=6627
The specs for a lot of TBS are there including the spacing.
Pity I didnt see those TBs earlier they would have been great for the GPZ900 project, bugger. Did you get them?

28-01-2007, 06:30 PM
How'd you go Ice?

evad
28-01-2007, 06:37 PM
hey chalkie, how did your research go?
I see you were on the gpz9 site, its a bit of a bitch to find all teh older posts. Did you figure it out? Oh by hteway the 650 is a 4 but I have a mate with a xb1200 buell on ms, any thing can run off of it, lol

28-01-2007, 07:01 PM
Oh, automatically assumed it was a twin being a 650. Even looked at all the piccies without picking up on that ..........Doh

Research is going well, but I'm concentrating on getting my dash finished first. One of the worst things about Canberra is that we really only have Dick Smith and Jaycar for electronics components, ergo lots of waiting for certain bits and pieces. I've got one of the Mikroelectronika Development boards on order which will allow me to develop a full blown graphical LCD interface faster.

Just got back from a family dinner.

Fuck I hate ebay, I was out bid.

28-01-2007, 08:54 PM
apparently there was 19 people watching this item, someone scored a bargain.

28-01-2007, 08:56 PM
Hey Chalky,i think you and Evad may be long lost brothers,...or maybe just lost.

28-01-2007, 09:01 PM
What you mean talented, exceptional electronic/electrical/mechanical skill, rides like a possessed demon, handsome, charming, polite, debonaire, etc etc etc

Well I couldn't be the only one now could I Davo :D

28-01-2007, 09:27 PM
Mate you'd be surprised ,i think the common term is "Poindexter".

28-01-2007, 10:23 PM
Yeah, I been called a lot of things in me life Davo, c@nt of a bloke, ass hole, bastard, prick, loud-mouthed obnoxious git etc etc etc

Never been called Poindexter before, Best you could come up with eh? tsk tsk tsk, you become pussy whipped lately or summat Davo?

:D

Come on tell us the truth, you'd love to have a home brew injection system to show off to all the school kids you hang around with

you can still see it from the rear but fixed cameras can't pick it up,
all i had to do was add some leds to light up the plate,

im looking forward to see a vid with it running, :D
keep it up,
have you thought of getting the oil cooler from the later gs's and using that as your intercooler, (i don't know if you could run water through a oil cooler, but it may be worth looking into)

good luck

Iceman
23-02-2007, 10:57 AM
Fortunatly our number plates are half the size of yours so it won't be too bad. I'm nearly finished securing the undertray and making the mount for the plate. I'll put the pics up in a couple of days.

As for the oil cooler, I have one here off a VFR honda which I might use.

The intercooler got posponed, mainly coz I can't weld alloy and since I'm only gunna run low psi, a intercooler would not give any performance gain. I'll revisit it after everything else is sorted.

latheboy
23-02-2007, 11:34 AM
Iceman ... First off thats cool you've done a good job ... But i gotta ask about the turbo .. Ive got a IHI turbo and its a water cooled one off a peice of shit subaru .. Is yours water cooled ... And if it is how you going about it , ie: arh fuck it she'll be right or hook up a small water bottle ... My plan is to run the oil straight out of the cooler though the water jacket before it gets back to the engine so it'll still be getting some sort of cooling , And an aux oil line for the oil gallery ... I think thats the best bet ..

Iceman
23-02-2007, 11:46 AM
Yeah it is a water cooled one, well should I say was. I've blocked off the water inlet and output, I'm hope'n it gets enough air to keep the temp down. At this stage the oil will feed from the front of the oil filter cover through the turbo and back to the sump. I have an oilcooler in the shed but might not use it. I want to get it going to see what sort of temps I'm getting before I go bolting more bits on.

Try'n to keep it as simple as possible, (just like the owner). lol.

Well, after eleven and a half months of sitting in my shed, the GS got to see the light of day. It sat on about 95kph for an hour with no problems. Then I arrived at Booster's place and unloaded it from the trailer. lol.

Greg worked away feverishly for most of the day, while I paced back and forth like an expecting father, only stopping to pass the ocasional tool or do up the odd bolt or clamp.

The Microtech ECU got the arse in favor of a Haltech one, which Greg has agreed to loan me for the time being. Once all the wiring was done and the fuelling system conected, Greg loaded a progam to the ECU and pushed the go button.......

..........only to discover that the battery is fucked. We packed up and I came home for tea.

Watch this space. I heading over with a new battery tomorrow.
