Well guys it arrived today and I chucked on the lights and got them wired so they are all working. I will be making up a bracket to mount the speedo cluster to this weekend and doing something with the front guard. The right rear set it busted arse as is the exhaust hanger so I will just make some billet ones I think and be done with it. Oh yeah I am going to turn the can into a shorty and put an undertray with LED's when it is through rego. I just hope that QLD transport are happy with the fighter look for a econimic write off.

Cheers
Paul

Yeah the can will take all of about 10 min for me to do. I have to take it in for the written of vehicle inspection next week so I will be doing very little to it until then after that it will be on like donkey kong. I have a CBR600RR underseat exhaust that I am thinking about trying to fit up but it doesn't look like there is going to be enough room. I will certainly keep you up to date with Photo's as I go.

Ok well it has cleared the inspection and I got it registered yesterday, I am heading off on holidays today but when I get back I will fit up some Renthals that I have here and make up and under tail unit for it and chop that muffler. I will keep the pics coming in the new year.

Ok well I cut the can today and decided that the arse looked like crap so I cut the old one off and made up an undertail for it. Just need to get some LED's for the tail lights and make up a braket for the plate and I am in business. The last thing for the time being will be to fit the new bars but I still have to decide on how I am going to do it. Let me know what you think.

Yeah I am much happier with it as it sits at the moment. The note is heaps better with the shorty can as well. I will be grabbing some leds this afternoon and fitting them up. I am still not happy with the way that the head lights and the instrument cluster are mounted but I will have a play with that over the coming weeks once I have the new bars fitted up. I will probably make up a belly pan for it as well and then maybe something with the paint. It just seems to be never ending once you get started.

So I painted the undertail and fitted the LED's pretty happy with it I still have the problem of the high speed indicators but I am sure that I different flasher unit will fix that.

Looks great love those leds - ditto Slain - tell us more - where did you get em from?

nelpd96
10-01-2007, 08:15 AM
The LED's are from Jaycar they are 10mm ones. I used the following:

ZD0201 for the tail light these are a 4000 mcd LED 50mA and 2v

ZD0202 for the brake light there are a 10000 mcd LED 150mA and 2.6v

ZD0212 for the idicators these are a 9000 mcd yellow 100mA and 2.6v

ZD0220 for the number plate light these are a 5000 mcd white LED. 30 mA and 3.5v
Because the LEDs use fuck all voltage you need to use a dropping resistor on the positive side before the LEDs ( the long leg on the LED is the positive one) if you go to this website it will tell you what size resisitor to use with them just put in how many you are using with the mA and V numbers that I have put up the top and it will tell you what size resisitor to use you will probably need a 1 watt resisitor to be on the safe side and you will be able to get them from Jaycar as well. I hope that this all helps.

That's a swt tail and shorty can

DaveK5
10-01-2007, 10:30 AM
You can use a high wattage resistor in parallel to slow your indicator relay down...wire a 20W resistor 6.2-10ohm and relay to the indicator circuit to mimic the load that would have been present with a bulb and switch your leds with the relay. but an electronic flasher or OEM led indicator relay might be simpler.

Looks nice paul hope the authorities think so...might do somethin similar on my 14.

Damm look at the specs on those leds 150ma reds...as good as your gonna I suppose.

nelpd96
10-01-2007, 11:07 AM
Dave, I know what you mean about the resisitor I just wanted it all fitted up also I am thinking that in this day and age an OEM LED Flasher relay shouldn't be too hard to find. I am sure that if I get pulled over that I will be in the shit because none of the LED's would be ADR compliant and I don't have a reflector. Having said all that the shorty can is loud enough that I don't think they will be too worried about the lights to start with. The next step is to sort out the headlight setup. I am even looking at using a Luxon LED for headlights depending if I can get one big enough. If you look around Jaycar have some 5mm 30,000mcd reds but I wanted the bigger ones.

cheers
Paul

it looks great!!. what are the leds in the center for? they arent red right or are my eyes going on me. Also is there any problem with the leds facing down like that or do they have a wide field of view? It was just brought to my attention that you can actually get 60degree ones now.

DaveK5
10-01-2007, 11:26 AM
30,000mcd fark poke your eye out...might go an see carl bout some of those for my bike, imagine a cluster of the fuckers.

Luxeons are good thing but never seen em used as headlights not sure they would work over the distance of 200metres,but maybe focused through a lense of some description.
Go for it it'd be a wicked experiment...Jaycar sell em led torches and they look OK.

nelpd96
10-01-2007, 12:05 PM
Yeah Carl is a good bloke is he still driving around in the flash as magna? and they have heaps of stuff in there, I wouldn't mind making one of the digital Fuel Adjusters to see if I can trim the fuel up.

The ones in the middle are the brake lights the outer the tail lights and then the idicators as I have put on the picture. They aren't too bad point down light that because the ones that I got have got a bit of punch but they are not as good as they would be if they were facing rearward. It was one of those things where it just seemed too hard at the time. It was very cheap to do so I might make up another one down the track as this one isn't an exact fit.

Hi guys, I have been OS for a while and haven't had a chance to play with the bike until this week. This is the latest on it. I still need to try and get the bars done this week and it has a bolt on sub frame so it looks like the tail will get a bit of a lift later next week.

Not much of an update I know but I had a chance to get a couple of photos with the F-111's at RAAF Townsville before I moved. I have been waiting for my brother to send the photos through. I still have to try and clean them up a bit because there were taken with a dodgey camera but they are not too bad. There was a plan to try and get some with the F-18's but we didn't have time. Haven't done anything else to the bike really because I have been flat out with work and stuff like that but I will let you know as soon as I get organised.

Yeah I had to change the tail light because I was having too many problems with the LED's breaking off from the vibration. This doesn't look as cool but is a little more robust. I still want to get some decent bars on it but because of what it is everything has to be custom made which cost money I don't have at the moment. I will get there eventually.

Well seeing as it is offically cold as fuck here in Canberra I have decided to do some work to the bike. I am lucky enough to hae a bolt on sub frame so I am making a new shorter version. Not too sure how I am going to finish the tail once I have got it built but I will sort that out later. I also pick up from 20mm ally plate to use for a set of bar mounts. I have got that in at the moment getting some large holes drilled and I get that back on friday so hopefully I will have the bars mounted by the weekend. I will take some photos of the progress tomorrow as it was too dark when I finished tonight.

Yeah, that is going to be the challange with the new tail is keeping it angular like the tank. I have to change it though because at the moment the tail is too big for the rest of the bike and it doesn't look quite right. I have an idea about and integrated bellypan/muffler but I am not too sure how I will go about it yet. I will probably see if I can get some 1.3mm plate on the weekend and start bending it up. Although it is a little bigger that I would like I am lucky because the battery and all the other shit that sits under the seat is in a nice little box with a couple only 2 bolts to hold it in so that should fit in well. Anyway I will chuck up some photos this afternoon.

Ok so I managed to get a bit done the subframe is pretty much finished now I just have to work out how I am going to attach the old pillion seat cover thing and from there it will be a heap of space foam and fibre glass to finish it off. I probably wont get it finished this weekend but it is good to be playing around with the bike again.

Ok some more photos of the sub frame, I figured that I would just cover it in foam, shape it and then fibreglass over the top and give it a coat of paint. It isn't too bad because if i stuff it up I just spray on some more foam. Hope to have the first layer of glass on before the weekend as I will be heading away wit work for about 6 weeks.

Hopefully I will finish getting it shaped this arvo. Unfortunatly I am running against the clock as I am heading up to the Goldy for 6 weeks with work. I wanted to get a layer of glass on it before I left but I guess I will just have to see how I go. I have made up a plate to go over the top yoke so that I can fit some risers because the top yoke wasn't flat. It looks a little home made at the moment but it should be ok with a bit of black paint.

Did you fiberglass straight on to the foam matey? or did you put a protective layer to stop the chemicals eating the foam?

Can the foam be sanded into shape, or do you have to knife it?

I'm gonna be doing a small change to my tank and I think your method will get the result I'm looking for.

Cracking bike build mate.

nelpd96
24-11-2008, 08:07 AM
Jockney, I still have the old bits but I think that I will keep them hanging in the shed for those long trips when I don't feel like squashing my nuts against the tank. It is suprisingly comfy though because of the size of the tank it supports you quite well.

nelpd96
24-11-2008, 08:11 AM
CBRRRT,
I taped the foam to start with but you don't really need to. I would just put a coat of resin down on the foam first so that you have a non porus surface when you do the glassing. You can cut the rough shape and then sand it if you want. The problem that I found was that depending on the temperature there were sometimes big holes in the foam when you cut the top off. Easy fix was to just squirt more foam in there. I like it because if you cut to much off you just squirt more foam on. The blue high density foam would probably give a better finish if you we able to get it right first time though.

I am keeping an eye out for the front end from a Daytona 675 to put on it and I should just about be done I think. That and I want to put the exhaust under the engine. I think what will have to happen is that I am going to have to do another mould of the tail once I get it how I want it to that it is just a glass shell as there is alot of bog and glass in there at the moment. Also I will have to see about dropping the tail by about an inch just to take the kink out of the seat. It is getting there though which is good. It is all going to be 100% engineered and legal so that I can use it as an example for my business.
