Hello all, I joined a couple weeks ago, and now I have been to the auctions and bought myself a bike.

Its a 1993 ZXR750L

Damage is fairings broken, dent in tank, broken brake and clutch levers, and missing the headlights. Thats about it.

I picked it up for $1100 plus fees, so out the door for $1204

I will upload some crappy pics once I get them off my phone.

Plans are to strip the fairings, get twin headlight setup, paint, bar end mirrors, new indicators, and then get it on the road before it gets too serious.

PS. bike also came with a Yoshi slip on. :D

well today I have been working on getting it started, it is looking like a dead fuel pump.

Currently draining the tank so I can pull it off and get a better look.

I have taken the PINK AND PURPLE!!!! hugger off and am gonna paint it black soon.

Also got a new conti Sport Attack tyre lined up for Monday.

RED ZX
23-08-2008, 09:54 PM
It started for the first time today!!!

WOO-F*CKIN-HOO!!!

it sounds nice, very loud, very very nice, ooh the scream of a jap i4.

Problem is a dead fuel pump, used a bottle to gravity feed the carbs, off to kawasaki on monday to order a new fuel pump.

Its so exciting!!

Just had to share my proud moment.

TurboKat

STOP!
A genuine Kawasaki fuel pump will cost an arm & a leg, you can use a cheap & easily available low pressure (2-4 psi) electric fuel pump off a car - the worst you'll have to modify is the fuel lines if the new pump doesn't have the inlet/outlet in the same position.
FWIW, take the plastic cap off the existing pump & see if the contact is fused shut, it's a common problem with them, you can free it up & file the contact points clean to get it working again & it'll probly last another 50 thousand.

TurboKat
23-08-2008, 10:23 PM
Also common on that model is the fuel pump doesn't get power to it due to a funky & hard to trace fault in the sidestand, clutch & neutral switches not talking to each other proply.
Unplug the pump & put 2 wires to it direct from the battery & you might find it'll start pumping like crazy!.
Simplest solution? hard wire the fuelpump to an ignition source or put a manual switch on it.

timbo
23-08-2008, 10:25 PM
I have a after market fasit fuel pump on mine mate, bolted strait up to the factory mounts.
You just have to run new lines to the carbs. The pumpcost me about 100 bucks i think from Repco.

RED ZX
23-08-2008, 10:34 PM
hmm, i might try 12V power to the pump, and checking the contact as you suggest, I did use a multi meter and found 8V to the pump while cranking.

Actually now that I think about it, the fused contacts would make sense, as the pump had almost no resistance when I checked that.

So to clarify, you pull the little grommet out where the wires go into the pump? or is there like one end of the pump that I remove.

Thank you very much for the input.

RED ZX

I had considered a car pump, but i thought that even though the pressure would be okay, that maybe the volume would be too much?

This is what i used mate. The volume doesn't seem to be a problem, i've had this setup for two years now,no worries.
Sorry the pic's aren't the best but you get the idea.:D

RED ZX
24-08-2008, 10:05 AM
cool, any idea what the pump was made for?

ATM I am finding it a real bitch to get the stock pump out. (bloody Japanese with thier small hands)

timbo
24-08-2008, 01:09 PM
just a universal fit and you're not the lone ranger there they are a real bitch.
You must need fingers that are 6 inches long with 8 knuckles on each. lol

RED ZX
24-08-2008, 03:02 PM
well I got the pump out, all worked fine when fed 12V, plenty of flow, but the pump is only getting 7V through the stock wiring, so I am going to run a fresh 12V feed through a relay tomorrow when I can get to the shops.

Also tomorrow I get new indicators, and maybe my new brake lever if it has come in?

All the switch gear works which is nice, all headlights etc work. yay.

Have started sanding/stripping the rear plastics and hugger and tank, ready to be painted black.

currently saying f' it.

Just gonna spray matte black over existing paint for now, ride for a couple months, then maybe pull it off the road and give it a proper paint job including the engine etc.

RED ZX

well I am back from a one week holiday in NZ.

Today I fitted my new AUSFR twin headlight setup, which is just wonderful.

Also painted one half of the tail unit matte black to see how it looks, and have decided to do the rest too.

Still unsure as to whether I will paint the engine yet.

Also today I am working on making a new front guard fit that was kindly donated by ZX12argh.

Still to do it wire up indicators, mount dash somehow, fix the fuel pump thats acting funny, as well as fit some mirrors. Then I shall be ready to do the paper work side of things to get her on the road.

RED ZX
06-09-2008, 08:00 PM
Today I made some progress:

Re-routed a lot of the main harness from outside to behind the frame, looks a lot better, hopefully tomorrow I can get some heat shielding to prevent any damage to the wiring from engine heat, but it seems fine.

Also sorted out fuel pump problem, don't know what it was exactly, Gave it a good clean up, ran my own relay and all seems sweet with it.

Also fixed a slight starting problem, and had it running for about an hour today so the battery is nice and charged.

Getting nice and close now. I think my biggest hurdle will be mirrors, as it has solid bar ends, so that option is out. and I do not know if I will be able to find the room on the stock clip ons to fit a bracket. we shall see.

Here is the new headlights and front guard on, still need to mount the dash somehow and tidy the wiring (partly done now).

http://a32.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/19/l_41097e7c22279d9faae8a948be2d8847.jpg

This is a general shot, with half the tail unit painted. almost finished painting all the bodywork now, should be done by then end of the week. then I just have the radiator and back wheel to paint.
http://a969.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/24/l_067fb17675097663319d9a3ca71d8c48.jpg

This is figuring out the fuel pump problem. You can see the coolant bottle zip tied to the frame is holding the fuel, and the pump is zip tied to the frame also. But it runs, so thats the important part.

getting there mate. Maybe chuck the guages out and fit a small digi dash? I know they are pricey but it would clean the front end right up, or if funds don't allow it (as most of ours don't :) ) use a pushy speedo?

RED ZX
07-09-2008, 05:51 PM
nah I am quite happy to use the original dash for a while until funds allow a new unit. Looking at getting one of these down the track:

At the moment the main focus is paint and getting it all back together so I can take it for its first ride.

Also must sort out my mirrors....

I have had enough of being without a bike. so the paintwork is going to suffer majorly.

I am just gonna give it a quick coat of matte black from a spray pack.

Eventually it will be redone professionally with some brush work, but for now, I am just in "I NEED TO RIDE IT" mode.

Stock decals on the tank are being a bitch so are just getting painted over. shall look dodgy as all hell, but hopefully I won't be sitting still long enough for anyone to notice.

Main thing is I will be happy enough with it, and I will be on the road.

Also the guys at my work have offered to help out with my mirrors problem for free, so good news on that front.

Painting will be done tomorrow, then time for re-assembly, wire up indicators, mount mirrors, and do paperwork.

Fingers crossed, 2 weeks.

Just a quick update:

Ordered new top yoke, risers, street bar, brake lines and bar end mirrors yesterday.

Now that I know it will be a while until I get all that, it will give me time to pull the back wheels off and paint it, drain the coolant, pull the radiator and paint it, and pull off the exhaust and paint it if I get motivated enough.

Here is a progress pic:

I rode it around the yard a bit today, 10-20km/h, on grass, too much front brake, DOWN SHE GOES!!!!

hehehe. quite funny really.

Bike seems fine, just still running rough, will look into it more soon.

On the bright side, my new battery that I got today works a treat, starts first go every go now.

13-09-2008, 03:35 PM
Maybe all it needs is to be taken out and have the absolute living daylights flogged out of it to solve your running problem?

Take it out somewhere nice and quiet in the coppers dept and treat it with the contempt it deserves! Go on you know you wanna valve bounce it all the way. Probably all it needs. Especially since you don't know how it's been ridden or dawdled around prior to your owning it..

yeah yeah I know.

That will be part of phase 2. which will also come along with some performance mods, and besides, there is a chance I might need to take the MRS on the back sometimes, and that pillion seat is comfy.

Yes, your arse does look big :D
A digi dash will clean the front up, and clean up all those wires.

Are you keeping the pink rear wheel??

RED ZX
14-09-2008, 01:05 PM
hehe NO.

waiting on rear stand so I can take the rear wheel off and paint it.

Arse will stay how it is for a while until I can afford some plastic surgery.

I am waiting on my new handlebar setup to come in, so I can mount my stock dash and then I will be cleaning up the wires a bit.

4 weeks to get it done before my holidays start. most of that will be spent waiting for handlebar setup. But in the mean time I can drop the oil and coolant, paint the rad, change oil filter etc, maybe paint the exhaust.

Mate, for the mirrors just order a set of ordinary bar-end mirrors. If yuou stock bar ends are solid, just give them to someone who can use a lathe to trim them down for you, and slap the mirros on your modifies bar-ends

Sorted!!! :)

RED ZX
19-09-2008, 07:30 AM
I was going to do something like that, but I have already ordered from Stu at AUSFR. Quite glad I did too as it was something I wanted for the bike, this just gave me the excuse to do it now.

25-09-2008, 01:23 PM
Well today the rear wheel came off. A lot easier than I expected.

It shall soon be painted black, getting rid of that lovely pink.

Hoping my bars and mirrors are not too far away now.... then I can put them on, tidy up and trim my wiring.

Then I just have to wait to change the plugs, then go do my paperwork to get her on the road!

Woo hoo, c'mon holidays.

RED ZX
26-09-2008, 04:54 PM
rear wheel painted, just gotta get some black nail polish to do the little tricky bits just on the rim.

Having a real hard time getting the sprocket off though, as I need to paint the part it mounts on.

I have soaked the nuts in WD40 for over a day now, giving it a fresh coat every so often, and even given them a light tap to break the seal a bit, but no luck.

Tomorrow I shall hopefully get it off and paint it, then the same with the radiator.

RED ZX

Wheel is all back on after being painted.

Chain cleaned and lubed up.

The bike was missing on one cyl:
While changing the spark plugs (now using 1 step hotter plugs with twin electrodes to help prevent fouling) I found that one of my plug leads was fooked. I am no longer someone who does things by halves, so I am ordering Dyna 2000 coils and wires, thinking about getting a Dyna digital ignition later on to go with them.

Even though its taking me a long time to get on the road, at least it will be a good bike and run well.
