View Full Version : My 'ZXR 750 H1' Project bike fighter !

Ok, after picking up this '89 ZXR 750 - I've decided to do a bit of a 'street fighter' on her.. and get it all looking nice in the process...

Before:

Scrubbed the wheels, regreased the chain.. scrubbed some more... scrubbed some more.. took off the front cowl..
Replaced the battery...

Just replaced the brake fluid too, was dark brown and funky looking.. like a cup of black milky tea.. pulls up much
harder too now !

Gotta be atleast 15 kilo's of metal there... add that to the front cowl - that's about 20 kilo's.. that front wheel's gonna be hard to keep down..

phase 2 begins, removing the exhaust.. but to do that.. you gotta remove the radiator, oil cooler and associated pipes... fittings and stuff..

Now, on to the R/H ( brake side ) radiator bolts...

Here's the wires to the thermo for the radiator.. on the L/H ( clutch side ) coloured blue.. ( photo for reference )

Ok, didn't get any pics of removal of the actual radiator ( takes both hands to pull it out - but it involves removing the horn - and pulling it forwards and out..

leaves a big hole, like this..

a little superficial what would appear to be corrosion.. but it was like a powder, and just rubbed right off with the touch of a finger..

Now, to the removal of the engine.. this will be phase 3..

I've located the main bolts.. Front R/H Top ( Brake side )

Here's the oil cooler, which sits seperate from the bike on a metal frame..
Also attached is the oil filter - never seen an oil filter that wasnt on a sump before - this threw me for a couple minutes looking at all the piping..

Ok, haven't undone the chain yet.. but I'm working top down..
Unplugged the wiring from the cluster to the rest of the bike..
Removed the coils from above cylinders 1 and 4

Ok, so i realised that 'supercheap' tools, live up to their name.. super cheap, super shit...

So i went out and bought these puppies..

The engine is removed easily, by removing 2 bolts from the following locations ( as seen in the 2 pics below ) 1 on the top, 1 on the bottom..

As you can see, the motor requires support to lift and hold in the frame - to remove the 2 retaining bolts.

I used my hydraulic car jack for this.. which made the bike unstable on the rear stand.. but i kept an eye on it..

I had to remove the front sprocket cover, to remove the retaining nut from the frame.. having never done this one the kawasaki, i can safely say that I'll never allow it to look like this ( filthy ) once it's back together again...

The bike obviously has only be used as a work horse for the last 20 years. Sounds so wrong saying 20 years! I remember the day they came out my mate brought one over and we thought it was the maddest looking race rep bike we'd ever seen - how can that be 20 years ago? That was yesterday ....wasn't it?

hey its like a haynes manuel great stuff just a bit fof advice [uve probably done this anyhow ] i owned one of these fine machines ..make sur u check
.1 the gearbox sproket nut retaining ring ..my nut came off and wrecked my crankcases at 85 mph[ask my bro colin he was on the back lol][thers 2 diferent types the later one feels like its done up and it aint] ,,and
.2 change the little o rings on the water gallery behind the head under the carbs ..there a bugger to do when its all back together
good bikes those one of the best front ends for its time

Hillsy, I'd love to keep it all stock bro but the simple is, that it was dropped quite hard.. the plastics are pretty much U/S, the mounting brackets are all munted.. replacements will cost more than i spent on the bike.. and it's just not economically viable to 'restore' to original per se.. but my plans are..

1) polish the frame ( professionally done )
2) soda blast the block to remove the paint
3) carby rebuild, pull the head off.. check the rings etc..
4) shorten that tail.. but keep it looking like it did in the first couple of pics..
I reckon it looks awesome in that 'green' even though i'm a honda fan.. the green just screams ' check this shit out ! '

Scotty mac, yeah - I'm interested mate.. I'm thinking something short, sharp.. like the new 1098 ducati tail, or something distinct.. I've got a 97 900rr blade, and it's got a nice tail.. but not really as agressive as i'd like..
But I'm definitely interested - What have you got there matey ? ( if it saves me a week on the glassing.. it's time saved that I can spend on getting things polished etc )

Well, aparently the carbs are passed their use by date - and the monoshock is going to be pricey - which leads me to either a hagen from the UK or something similar for around $600 aud..

I have little choice at this point other than to either locate a set of low k' carbies - or put a cheap ( if i can find one ) motor from a zx9 into it.. or from another zxr750..

I'm really starting to get a bit blue about the whole thing, I had no idea it would be this difficult.. *sighs*

If any of you guys can point me in the right direction - I'd appreciate it..

( I think i'm not all that far from standing right back and start throwing matches at it ! :P )

size 6 allen key.. to release the top of the yolk..

Ok, I've got it all apart - frame is barren..

it's in 2 pieces..

It's gonna be too hard to keep this clean if it's polished - can anyone recommend a good painter than can strip it and make it look purdy for me ?

Do something about reducing the size of that fuckin orible chopper picture though mate, its fucking up the screen. Oh and you might get a rear fender something like that from a place that makes small domestic trailers, Bwaaaaarrrr sorry mate a little bit of sick just came up [xx(]

If you're going to outsource the job, may as well get it powdercoated - just make sure you tape up the bits you don't want coated (inside headstem, etc)
