After many a day with my finger in my @rse, I finally sourced a suitable candidate to join the esteemed ranks of ASF nakedness. Some unlucky style monkey thought it wise to point nose due north with no exit strategy.. oohh sad. So now the plan is to give her a new and some what more exposed existence.. Any pearls of wisdom are most welcome..

Excellent mate!!! :D[8D] So I know what we're doing this week end. I'll bring the grinder. ;)

Bring it around to my place once you've got the bits in mind and we'll sort out a wicked paint job. :D

Shorten the rear, unless you want keep pillion.
I can help sort out some stylish radiator covers too, once I've done mine.
Fuggit, I'd like to create a nose/headlight piece too if you're willing? May take some time but could save you some money.

Get the frame checked. wheel touching the fairing and odd tank gaps are a bad sign.
otherwise going to be a fun naked bike

Chase

Hey Bear sounds great.. there's no rushin this one and am pretty keen to make it something different! Should get it late this week or early next., then prob take at least 2 slabs of thinking time to get get the ball rolling ;)

Chase
16-07-2008, 08:28 AM
Had a few concerns about the frame too, but after getn it checked it is only front wheel (fkd) and the forks are bent - head stock etc is all cool.. and if not it goes to track![8D]

Booster
16-07-2008, 11:31 AM
There no big problem :) ebay time ;)

Chase

Well it has arrived and the frame is in one piece![8D] I have taken the forks off which need straightening - any suggestions on who to use?

Might be worth getting your frame checked out for being straight. With bent USD forks it would've had a pretty big hit and my guess would be the frame being out of alignment.

Nice project starters those R1's ;)

Chase
28-07-2008, 09:14 AM
I've done some quick measurements and square sets over the frame and seems to be ok, although getting someone who is qualified is prob not a bad idea. You have to look pretty hard to find the bend in the forks - it's actually more that you can feel a slight rub when compressed than a visual thing.
Any suggestions on who I can get to check the frame who knows their shite?

Thanks for the link Bear. I'm keen to catch up and have a chat about the mask for the bike when you've got time.

I had my ZX9 done by Dave Kellett in BNE, but I don't know of anyone reputable down your way. Cost me about $400 to straighten my frame, sub-frame and true the front discs.

I'm with Hooli - Laurie Alderton knows his stuff when it comes to frame straightening. Does a good job on alloy rims too, within reason. ;):D
I'm speaking from experience with the rims.

Hey Steve, check these out, I think something like these, would be perfect for the R1, I spotted it on Des' TL1000 and he was kind enough to pass on the link,

Thanks to Bens' keen eye and great work the forks have been sorted and frame is all good. The original front wheel has been sacrificed to the road gods - managed to pick up another in pretty good nick. As most of the hardliners can see there's not a whole lot of mods being done in stage 1 - it's just to get it over the pits, stage 2 will include some yet to be decided tasty bits..

Yeah ran the wires (along with choke cable) over the radiator and up under the clamp - used some of the heat shield from the belly pan to case the wires in. The brake cable mounts on the bottom clamp make a good spot to run the wires thru and lock in.

Mate thats trick how tight it fits in I just wonder though how will the silicon hold up with the pressure of a running bike[8D]
Oh and BTW how about just an inspection guage and the rest blacked out[?]

Chase
17-08-2008, 08:03 PM
Yeah, def looks better blacked out. I think the bottom should be ok - I used a cap that actually screwed into the bottom of the bottle (had to drill out the opening a tad to get it to fit), the silicon is really just to secure it in place. and if it falls to pieces no doubt there'll be something else lying round I can chuck on.

Do the risers still clamp down hard on the bars? If you've bolted the bracket for your speedo to your risers it would be reducing the hold of the bars. Wouldn't want the bars spinning forward after a big mono!

Chase
21-08-2008, 09:48 AM
All seems good. The risers had a bit of bar exposed when tightened down prior - now with the plate there's prob about a mm of bar visable from the front of the risers. Think it should be cool - will have some sad pics to put up later if not [B)]

SatinFS

how thick is the ally on the headlight mounts?

unless its a light MX headlight i wouldnt be going under 5mm or it'll crack after about 6months

yeah good call. The ally is only 3mm and it's a gen headlight off a SV I think, so prob need to take it to exben to get the prof version done.
