BOHEMION

Yes and it all your fault! I a good look at one today when i was test riding some other bikes. Was soo eager. But.. I need a every day rider and da Kat would be a strict weekender

Rich
25-02-2006, 11:43 PM
Must admit the Kat styling is timeless. Wouldn't mind one in my shed, one day..... The thing is with all the interest they attract they're going to be snapped up in no time.

Cheers Rich

ozkat
25-02-2006, 11:44 PM
I dunno why they cant be a daily ride, 100000+ km without an engine rebuild on lots of GSX engines.

BOHEMION
25-02-2006, 11:45 PM
I have done some research since all the hype on this site, and there a piece of history. Every day rider with 90 plus K's a day. I would want my Kat to retain value

Rich
25-02-2006, 11:47 PM
Don't know about that one Boh, I'd rather one as an every day rider than weekender. Cruising to and from work with a shit eating grin day in day out :D

Cheers Rich

25-02-2006, 11:48 PM
100,000+ km?

More like 2-300,000 km.............. at least, the engines are bullet proof, and most were daily riders.

Rich
25-02-2006, 11:52 PM
You reckon Ozkat has hyped them up here at ASF ?? I reckon Ozkat uses all his hype on the Minister for War and Finance at home....

ok so here is the spec

Braced Chassis (with engineers certificate)
Chino (or something like that) fork brace
K&N Pods plus jetting (because the bracing meant no room for airbox, what a pity :))
Braided lines on the front and a brake master from a later model gixxer
heated hand-grips...
brand new battery a few days ago
sprockets and chain apparently only a few hundred k's old
jet-something aftermarket exhaust (with noise testing certificates)

the negatives,

honda VT-whatever rear blinkers
broken tacho needle but can still sort of see where it is going
paint is looking a bit old
screen is all crappy looking
brakes are still shite

Good news
only out of rego last september
has a noise thingy but goes away when u pull the clutch in
i measured the battery volts (thanks chalky) and all is good. apparently stator rewound recently
fairings are all in very good condition other than the paint
tyres are legal (although i might swap them for something a bit better)
should sail through rego on monday without any worries :D

this will be my new daily-rider/work ute
its actually pretty easy to move around once its rollng

already have a list of stuff i want to do, but this wont be touched til i have other things in order...

so, let the bidding begin
how much did i pay??
first to guess wins a free beer at the fools [B)]

3.5k

26-02-2006, 01:07 AM
That noise'll be the clutch basket, not a problem, but easily fixed if it bothers you. If you leave the bike on it's side stand the clutch basket will come out without even draining the oil.

3k

Rich

geez that was a MISSION!!!

organised blue slip at 10:30
all was good, happy with engineers certificates etc
then he asks
"where is the compliance plate"

shit...
i called the dude i bought it off, he said it never had one!
on the previous rego papers it said "not complied"

i managed to talk my way out of it, got the blue-slip after about an hour of phone calls to the RTA tech department cos the guy didnt have a figure for kilowatts (cos the kat's too damn POwERFooll!)

sorted, off and get insurance from NRMA
turns out cos its "low k's" the market value is 5 GRAND, so i got it insured for that
dont waste time now with no comp insurance...

ok, back across town to the rta that was down the road from the blue-slippers (he said to go there cos he was going to let them know about the kW issue)
after, wait for it... 3 HOURS!!!!! at the RTA im outta there
there tech department didnt want to have a bar of it cos they didnt know the kilowatts, so i had to hang out and wait to hear back from some other wanker department...

who cares though COS SHE's LEGAL!!!
lets ride :D

Looking good fimp. A few questions...

Are the holes there on the headstem from a compliance plate or didn't it ever have one? Is there more frame bracing, maybe around the headstem? How long ago was it engineered?

When I got my blueslip, the RTA wanted us to measure the wheelbase for them. Looks like they're building up a Katana facts file:)

fimpBIKES
27-02-2006, 05:25 PM
they measured the wheelbase,
i cant see any holes where a compliance plate would have been

apparently they needed to know kW as a part of the new "power-2-wieght" thing for L-platers

i tried to tell here it would be about 80kW (guessing) but she needed to hear it from the retarded tech department...
just put the new numberplate on, time to cruise down to the cafe [B)]

lookin good for a 20(ish) year old bike. Now that the hassle of making it legal is over(by the way do you have to do that every year?) are you going to make any mods to it or just keep it clean and standard? Are they easy to find/buy in OZ(maybe a stupid question as a few guys have them on this site), hardly see any over here, maybe they all in England.
Heres a nice site with good pics and further links.

Nice work fimp, looks like you've done well there mate.
Probably like driving a bus compared to the SV( or a jumbo?)
Clutch basket on my GS100s rattles too, not a major prob.
Might be worth checking out an oil cooler if you are riding in a lot of traffic, these old beasties are hard on their oil.
Check out the four pot calipers on suzukifreaks kat, they should do a good job on pullin her up.

would love to put better stoppers on there

thats the one thing im not particularly happy with
it has braided lines and a better master cylinder, but still the front brakes are wooden as!!

i got new pads for it today, so i will give her new pads and a bleed tomorrow and see from there

i have my spare gixxer forks and triples here but i really just need to use this as-is for now while i get the tiller of the ground

i wouldnt say it handles worse than the SV, its just COMPLETELY different

28-02-2006, 07:31 AM
Is that an EF front end on it Fimp?

fimpBIKES
28-02-2006, 07:48 AM

the guy said something about removing the anti-dive??

either way they handle pretty well, better than the shite forks on the SV i think :D

Lucky Bastard!! Nice Kat man im jealous!

And yes Gix a Kat section would be great!

28-02-2006, 12:04 PM
Need a better picture, but that looks like the posidive unit from the EF's, preferable to antidive. The top of the sliders though does look like the Kat ones.
If they are EF forks take care if ordering springs, the internal Diameter is smaller than the Kat forks (ie thicker walls, stronger) and the standard Kat springs won't fit. Outer diameter is the same.

i put some flushmounts on the front instead of the shovels that were on there before
i might see about replacing these ones for smoked items when i get the chance (i think stu seels similar ones in smoke finish)

they are pretty bright though, should get me out of trouble for now
i took that screen off too, looks like the pressure on the screen has tried to pull the bolts through the fibreglass on the fairing, so i guess i will fix that if i ever get to respraying it....

then i was shooting off down the road this morning and a few k's into it the speedo stops working
turns out the young mechanic dude put the cable at too sharp an angle yesterday
and it broke

so now i get a new one FREEEEE ;)
only trouble is it wont be in til late next week and i go past 2 stationary speed cameras on the way to work every morning **gulp**

i might have found some better rear blinkers to now thanks to veetwo
so thats about it for this baby til the tiller is finished (im sure i'll eat those words...)

It`s awesome to see so many people still find the kat a machine to admire.and as for the km`s the bottom ends last forever as they are roller bearing vs shell bearings.GS,GSX,KAT`s all have these bearings and Suzuki stopped using them as they were deemed to be overkill and expensive.Over engineered and understressed, how many manufacturers make things too good these days? And I didn`t answer your question about how much you paid for it fimp as I already knew from the bloke you bought it off!I couldn`t spoil it for ya.

It's no big deal Fimp, the rivets just get loose in the hub, there are heaps of mobs who rebuild them & some (like 10/10ths) who do them on a changeover basis - not sure of price.
It won't hurt to leave it like that for a while though, I've done 20K kms on a rattly basket in the past & it didn't get noticeably worse, just avoid hard launches & keep clean oil up to it.
I've only ever heard of them letting go on High Performance (read - big horsepower) engines in racing situations.

fimpBIKES
24-05-2006, 11:40 PM
shit shit SHIT

the sv sold on the weekend, so i need the kat to get to work
only trouble is that it seems to be having a fuel issue

the way i see it the fuel lever has 3 positions
forward = reserve
down = on
rear = "pri", prime?

i had the tank off the other day (pulled off to the LHS and upside down so i could play with some wiring) and now i think that the petcock (is that what its called, the thing with the lever on it) is blocked up on anything but the prime position

just to be sure, if i have the hose to the carbis off and i flick the switch down or forward
shouldnt fuel piss out everwhere? at the moment fuel is only pissing out when its on prime

can ANYONE help? i need to get to work in the morning and at the moment it'll do about one lap up and down teh street then just splutter and die
that is by using the "prime" to start it, then flicking it into the "reserve" position (i figure that the prime isnt meant to be used all the time)

anyhoo, what the fucks going on?

wishing i had a manual for it....

HELP!!!

fimpBIKES
24-05-2006, 11:59 PM
mmm, ok so i checked some more shit out
the fuel hose to the carbis was "slightly" wedged in between some stuff
but not enough to restrict flow my too much

so i figured that i may as well try riding it around on "pri" since thats the one that flows freely

it runs ok, went good for about 5mins of laps up and down the street
MY NEIGHBOURS LOVE ME :D

so i flick the switch to the res position after 5mins of trouble free "pri"
and after a bit it coughs and splutters
then flick back to "pri" and all is good again

so i think i will just ride to work on "pri"
will that hurt it?? cant see how it would

oh, and i should explain why i was doing shit in the first place
i was looking for the flasher relay, plus trying to work out why the headlight isnt working

the plug to the back of the bulb isnt getting any volts at all
so i dunno what thats about
but just then on the test, i gave her a fistfull of revs and the hi-beams works now??!?!?!

anyone got a wiring diagram?
the sun sets at 5pm lately and i wanna stay back at work and do foreign order :(

Gix11
25-05-2006, 12:04 AM
Borrowed information....... Is yours the two line set up?

"There is a vacuum petcock on your bike. If so you will have 3 positions: on, res and pri (will be engraved on the petcock) and there will be 2 hoses on your petcock, one is the fuel line, the other is the vacuum hose.

The on and res positions will only allow gas to flow when the diaphragm inside your petcock is opened by supplying vacuum from the running engine via a vacuum hose from the intake manifold to the petcock. When the engine is not running there´s no vacuum and the diaphragm closes, stopping the gas flow. Since the diaphragm closes when vacuum is not supplied, there´s no off position on a vacuum petcock, just leave it on all the time (switching to res when you´re low on gas of course).

The pri position however bypasses the diaphragm and allows gas to flow freely to your carbs (or on the ground if the fuel line is disconnected). This is meant for priming the carbs if they are dry after overhaul or storage. Leaving the petcock in the pri position will eventually flood your carbs and spill gas all over. It can also cause gas to leak into cylinders and into the motor oil, which should be avoided."

ok good shit, so where does this vacuum line go?

i saw it there, but didnt notice anything else within reach to put it to

Yeah Fimp, Gix is onto it, you've accidently disconnected or crimped the vacuum line that's all. It should be running at a slightly fast idle now coz there'll be a vac fitting open.
Vac source for the tap is usually t'd off the underside of the two outer inlet manifolds.
If you ride it to work on prime, make sure you turn the tap off when you get there coz if your needles & seats are worn, they'll let fuel past & into the motor & if that happens & your rings are worn it'll explode when you hit the starter which would serve you right for taking the screen off :D

I found this in one of my old mags. It's a concept Kat that i tried to build some years ago using only the pic to go on. It's based on the L model Gixer. Just thought you might be interested.
