Ok, been toying with this idea for quite a while now and finally one came up at a reasonable price. I toyed with the idea of a cafe fighter thing but this is such a pretty little thing it should be brought back to it's former glory. Probably gonna be a slow build as I still want to complete the turbo on the B12 first.
If any of you fuckers have any bits laying around that will move this build along, I will be proper chuffed to hear from you. Particularly need side panels. Cheers.

Side panels can be a bit hard to find, especially the correct ones. They do come up on ebay from time to time.
A mate resto-ed one of these about 6 or 7 years ago and had dramas finding them then.

Will certainly be a cool old ride when it's done.

Good score. its amazing how much stuff is out there. I think the GT380 and GT550 shared most parts. New OEM side covers are available for about $65 in the UK.

Cool! Thanks for that. Seems the old 380s & 550s are pretty easy to get bits for but the 185s are a bit harder. Really looking forward to this one.

Cheers Russ. That was already in my watch list even if it was only for the genuine nuts and bolts.
I'll be soaking the old girl in diesel and penetrating oil again today before I even show her a spanner. Want to clean up 30+ years of crap and reduce the risk of shearing or rounding any fasteners. As I said, I'm pretty excited about this but not in any real rush.

I had a bit of she'd time today coz I wanted an idea of what I was up against. The motor was locked up and pistons were the suspects. The pictures speak volumes and its just as well I was planning a FULL rebuild. The motor had been stripped before at some stage as none of the head studs were tight and the gaskets were absent.
Got the seat lock open and took the tank off.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/63D45E7F-BE07-4AB9-92E4-8A1840751793-12716-00001C213A6E016D.jpg
Whipped out the air box and dropped the carbies out.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/9D0C088A-792E-49AF-9B9E-30A94715D52D-12716-00001C2129F0FF0F.jpg
They are locked up pretty tight and well grotty so a candidate for ultra sonic cleaning.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/AB8F89CB-09BD-4F5A-91C3-4F1B7C0A5B34-12716-00001C208020E7D7.jpg
Took the RAM Air off and the head. Something missing here?!?
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/5F730FE8-CA75-4CE9-AFBF-CE0181BD0D6C-12716-00001C20E2B0DF29.jpg
And an inspection of the head proved there had been something banging around in there.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/9D4912E4-F406-4871-BE9A-90B87B33940D-12716-00001C20CB18D2D9.jpg

All in all, it looks like this thing has never seen a service or been cleaned. It's gonna take a while for the degreaser to cut through all the grime. Hope to have the donk on the bench tomorrow ready for more surgery.

that centre pot looks like a plug tips broken off .....the centre pots on air cooled triples run hot [thats the reason for the "ram air " thingy] for that reason they are prone to seizure
check the middle carb i upped the needle a notch on my 550 to make it run a bit cooler these days though better plug design and electronic ign and better 2 stroke oil help a lot

Jinx
13-01-2013, 09:50 PM
I wonder what the differences were between the GT380 and the GT550 motors. It might be only bigger barrels and pistons on the same bottom end. The Japs did a lot of that in the 70s, even Ducati did it with the 250/350/450 Desmo.

Jockney Rebel
13-01-2013, 10:22 PM
im pretty sure the 550 s bottom end is bigger physically plus it had a starter motor mounted under the engine and the 380 has asix speed box 550 has 5 speed
the good thing tho is that all the triple suzys use piston sizes similar to the singles
hence the weird capacitys ie 380 being 3 125s and 550 being 3 185s so the later TS pistons should fit up to the water cooled era GT 250 pistons fit a 380 also

Jockney Rebel
15-01-2013, 09:38 PM
...oh and if you are handy with a mill you can fit reed valve blocks and enjoy much more torque better fuel economy plus a reasonable increase in power ..mated with a decent set of period Allspeed spannies and some mild porting she'll likely see about 40hp+

Sounds good to me Simon old boy. The carbs are propper gopping and will need a full rebuild and new jets etc. Was thinking of soda blasting the barrels. do you think the U/S would be as good or better?

stiffsimon
16-01-2013, 10:58 AM
I've just glass bead blasted my RS flatties and they've come up great. U/S cleaning doesn't necessarily make them beautiful but it does make them clean,IE the U/S cleaning doesn't necessarily remove rust, oxidation or imperfections but the glass bead blasting will do most of that.
I'm going to put my carbs back into the U/S cleaner to make sure any errant glass bead is cleaned out

Most of the small fuel / oil lines are pretty much stuffed, gone brittle over time. Anyone know where I can get some generic tubing to replce them, (Jimmi), without having to track down some OEM stuff from Suzuki?

9 years in the making......been put back in moth balls again for the past 12 months whilst house moved and new shed getting built.
Perhaps a little inspiration for you.
2 Strokes are awesome because they are self preserving.
So your going down the VJMC route of nut and bolt? Why not go a little modern with maybe an RGV front end, a set of micron or similar expansion pipes a flat track seat etc etc. Doing them all original is harder than modifying.

A bit more time in the shed. Finally got to a point where the block is clean and safe to start cracking it open.

Got the points cover off and removed said points. Won't be needing them, going a bit more modern and reliable.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/B5D5A8DC-A8E8-4329-A977-6634C149DE8C-980-000001AAA8A16769_zps7f9ebbdb.jpg

After that I whipped off the cover to discover a stuffed nylon gear. NOT what I wanted to find but such is life.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/4E38718D-020C-4855-ACEA-CCC4541B426C-980-000001AB0F3E936A_zps1f59ef05.jpg

Then removed the clutch cover and clutch aasy. Looks pretty good.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/0B8E49AC-E3B6-46DE-B941-A70474D0F792-980-000001AAFCDC25A0_zpse3ae20aa.jpg

You see the smallest gear here?

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/2E1F580B-E8EE-4EB8-936A-7F2AFACFF911-980-000001AAE7927C82_zps196fed9a.jpg

Well there's a tiny pin that acts the same as a woodruff key. Dropped mine and took ages to find.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/E1653044-0F43-44D1-9C94-70996DBD34FE-980-000001AABEC805E0_zps4206aa89.jpg

Spun the block and set to work on the alt.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/8E66C89F-6592-4739-B5F2-87E9E033B376-980-000001AA9462EB6B_zpsa8662c03.jpg

After taking the top off I noticed some uneven wear. Is this normal or is there a balance or bearing issue on the crank shaft?

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/C3004FF3-C599-4A89-B49B-EE36AC43A926-980-000001AA6590E2A0_zps7adbc993.jpg

Gonna order all new bearings and seals for a full bottom end rebuild. With a bit of luck gears and selectors will be fine. Any tips from 2smoke officianados while at this stage greatly appreciated.

08-02-2013, 05:46 PM
Check the wear on the inside of the Alt housing , if the wear mark is only in one spot its more likely the housing was out of alignment. If its all around the housing its a bearing. Good news is your slip rings are in good shape measure the size of your brushes and I'll see if I have replacement newbies here , if so I'll post em to you .

Been a while between posts on this project but I'm happy to say there's been a breakthrough. Got myself a genuine bargain this week. Picked up a complete GT380 in kit form for a paltry $600 ! Everything is there including the original tool roll. Last registered 1983 with 18,000 on the clock. Proper chuffed with this.

Enough bits and pieces arrived this week to allow me to put one engine back together ;). Waiting on big end bearing, ignition timing gear and seals for the other. Better get a frame cleaned, new bearings in and painted so I have a safe place to keep the newly assembled motor.

Pictures to follow.

More progress albeit slow. Stripped down GT #2 as I will be using this frame & engine for the resto. Cleaned the frame and removed 30+ years of gunk! I'll take it for soda blasting & painting later this week.

The frame is painted and ready for reassembly of sorts. The shocks were too far gone and TBH I couldn't be fucked trying to restore them so I picked up some of Chinas finest from Fleabay for just over $100 delivered. TUV approved to boot.

Don't forget to slap on a little anti seize compound on the stainless bolts with nuts and ones going into Ali bloke , makes life so much easyer years later when you need to pull something down to not have it corroded together.

Had a little shed time. Thought polishing casings might be a good move so made a start.
Began with this:
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i369/got_buckleys/6A54E783-4114-470B-9904-64D7745F7BF4-35880-00003990A36A7123_zps6802ccb5.jpg

Bit of a blast and wheel work, ended up like this:

But there is a bit of crank damage. Pretty sure rust is not meant to be there.

Had some more time in the shed. After getting hold of another crank, (cheaper than rebuilding one, thanks Simon), I managed to throw a motor together.

Replaced pistons, rings, bearings etc into cleaned & honed pots.

Ran new cci tubes with new filters from crank to barrels.
