Finally Im starting a new build.

Bought a pos/parts only NSR150 a year ago, kept the front and rear ends, and threw the rest away.
Finally found a cheap, still registered XR600 two weeks ago,and been tinkering since.

Here's what i started off with:

Strip down and fit SSSA.
It was a piece of piss, just needed afew washers to make up the difference.

Chopper anyone???
http://i.imgur.com/aW3ym.jpg

The front end was simple enough.......press both stems out of the triple clamps, and weld in the XR600 one into the NSR150 clamps.

I'll be offloading most of the XR600 parts, and heaps of other bike related stuff on eGay shortly, and im gonna use those $$$$s to fund most of the build.
If there's anyone here interested in the parts taken off the XR,pm me!!

Yeah I looked at the nsr150 into xr600 and ended up going zzr250 instead. Mostly as I didnt have the nsr front end, looks like a nice easy swap.

It WAS a bloody easy swap over.
Surprisingly,i did so many hours using Google Images, and haven't found anyone that's done it yet!!!
The closest i've found is KLX650 with RGV250 banana swingarm.

My ultimate build would be a CR500E with RVF400 USD Frond end,4.5in SSSA rear, but with the prices people are asking for the CRE's.....my best hope would be one thats been busted up bad,and still rego'd......so a pretty impossible find.....

The NSR's front end is pretty basic......I'm keeping my eye's open for a complete NSR250 front end,but they're pretty rare nowadays...

If memory serves me correct ben put a SSSA into a TT600 a while ago.
Remember reading about it in a magazine and the biggest problem was the swingarm getting chewed up due to the slack that is run through a squirter chain. It used a nylon roller as a tensioner of sorts to still give the flex for the chain but not rip more chunks out of the slider and arm.

I have found a couple of SSSA dirt bikes, one is in the galleries here,an XR600 with a triumph SSSA,but it looks big and heavy, and there's also that CR250 with a RVF400 arm,but they were still motards, i just haven't found a Street/Dirt Tracker Styled bike with a SSSA.
The slack in the chain may be a problem if you're running long travel enduro suspension,as it needs the slack,im planning on running a road shock,so hopefully the chain wont need to much slack, and not chew out my swingarm.

Here's my latest acquisitions....a Hypermotard Bar risers and Bar.

Anyone know if the VHT engine paint is ok with air cooled engines??
Does petrol stuff it up easy,or is it pretty tough once heated up,and cooked on??

The weather is awesome to go for a ride, but with the amount of coppers around,i think its safer for my licence to stay home and tinker in the garage.
So.....i got abit done this long weekend. Hopefully parts im waiting on get to me this week,so i can make a start on the subframe/tank/exhaust side of things.

Hey Nick, have you sought-ed out which rear shock would fit ,looks like a lot of fun to ride when completed

nick76
09-04-2012, 02:19 PM
Yeah, got a KTM Superduke shock coming in the mail.
I figure the NSR150 arm doesn't run any linkages,it's KTM PDS style, and same with the SD Swingarm,so it should work well.
I think the front end will be fairly soft, compared to the rear,so i'll have to see what i can do about that...when it comes to it.

Pity i lack any real skills on the tools....but i'll give it a go.

The front forks are that basic/low spec....thats pretty much all i can do to them.

hey did you have any bits of the nsr left over?, i have two one in tupperware and one cafe/fighter trim im doing up. Also with the front forks the piston has two giant holes in it and does not really work it just allows the oil to squirt thru a wee bit slower, in mine i pulled it out welded the two holes and drilled 4 much smaller holes and now the forks actually work pretty good.

by the way awesome build

You could also look at machining up a set of spacers to go on top of the springs if the front end is too soft.

I was originally just thinking of doing this/preloading the springs.
I might have to do this and what rgv4play suggested,as im no lightweight!!

A couple of headlights to choose from and brackets,LED numberplate light, brake light, some resistors, and grips.

http://i.imgur.com/LF3hX.jpg
I also got a handmade alloy fuel tank from the states. It was a pain in the arse trying to figure out how to fit it,but got some brackets welded to the bottom....

http://i.imgur.com/njtBY.jpg
Also got some new rubber......tho there isn't much of a range of sticky ones for the little NSR rims...

I've also had the frond end firmed up alot.......nothing special, just much heavier oil and preloaded the springs for now.
I've made brackets for the ignition which is going under the seat, and the speedo.....whick i bought a Stealth Trail Tech one.
Numberplate mounted indicators also arrived.
The bike is with my mate now,and he'll re-wire the whole bike for me,and set up the FCR carb.
The only thing missing now is just fuel taps and all the associated fittings that go with it....which has been a royal pain in the arse trying to find things that will fit/work!!!
But its 90% done......hopefully i'll be riding the old girl in a couple of weeks......

so cool, is it a bit lower now after the sssa switch?

how is the tri-light? seen some on ebay and they look kinda cool

nick76
21-08-2012, 10:02 PM
I don't think it's much lower in the seat height.
I might have to measure how far off the ground a standard XRs footpegs are? This shouldn't squat as much as a chook chaser tho..
I don't really want it to get much lower....im hoping the pegs don't touch the ground too easily.....??
I haven't seen the tri light in action yet........im hoping it's not tooooo bad.....not real sure what LED headlights are like?

Looking forward to seeing it up and running! Why did you go for the alloy tank over the remanufactured Honda one? And where did you get the Honda one from? Looks like it'd be an ideal cafe racer / street tracker / retro tank.

The honda one looked alittle small.....coz in my head i really wanted a Harley Sportster tank,to get the American street tracker lookbut couldnt find one at a resonable cost that i could butcher up,as the tunnel on them is too narrow for the XR frame rail.
I got the CB copy tank off ebay Australia. The aussie seller has listed afew of them now....not sure if he has any left. I think they were around $150AUD with a keyed cap and fuel tap.

Circumference wise, the muffler is spot on for the tracker seat.....the length is hypermotard'ish, just a single and not double like on a Ducati

I sorted out a velocity stack for my carby today, and cut up and stuck on a seat pad.
Not much to choose from in little old Nowra......it's easier to get a gun here than some high density foam in Black!!
So i resorted to a camp floor tile, and its come up not too bad...

Nice at idle, with a bit of a bark when you give it a good blip.
Engine sounds spot on aswell, not rattly or anything.
