Howdy folks,I've finally extracted the digit and started to get this thing on the road after 17 years of idleness.A brief history,I bought it in 1982,got it rewired shortly after then a few years later got it resprayed ,the wheels respoked and the engine rebuilt and rode it around for a few years then parked her up. My main concern will be getting it started after sitting still for so long.A few months back I took the cam cover off and turned the motor over by hand and everything seemed to be ok,but any advice on how to do this would be appreciated. This wont be a full on resto or rebuild just a bit of a tidy up.Cheers lads.

I would like to get rid of these clocks and replace them with a smaller acewell type one. Also get a smaller headlight.

i hada cafe raced CB900 and i used the clock off a CT110 on a home fabbed bracket. The wiring spapped straight over... ok sure it aint nothing on some after market thing but at $50 who could complain and it worked a treat.

also with engines that have been sitting for ages im a fan of a squirt of diesel down the cylinders before turning them over under compression.

the paint job was done in about 1988 and was at the time the best paint job I had seen ,until I fucked it with brake fluid,so I think it needs something ,I thought of some sort of olde worlde english gothic style lettering with maybe gold GT type stripes, anyway you photo shop pros feel free to have a play or piss take.

Those gauges are worth a small fortune, I know a couple of blokes who'd probably sacrifice their lefty for them.
Are you gonna sell? If so how much?
Wind the motor over with the plugs out,[a little diesel in the bores is not a bad idea] make sure there is oil pressure at the crank, and oil flowing to the head before giving it ignition. They are tough old buggers, it will probably be fine. There is an oil chamber access plug beneath the timing cover, remove this and install a gauge there, or at least make sure there is oil flow.
Some calipers might help...........I bet they are seized solid!

Forgot to mention, great lookin Zed sickboy. My first real "scare" was on the back of a rickman900 with a 'big bore', and 33mm smoothbore carbs.
The owner was a fuggen lunatic, who had to prove himself at every opportunity. I was an absolute moron to get on the back, but about a dozen "green cans" had slurred my judgement!

sickboy
09-10-2007, 08:38 AM
Benz ,the gauges where rebuilt with new covers years ago ,in the top pic you can see a small dent ,this happened when my junkie house mate decided to have a piss up while I was at work and the bike got knocked over by some fucken looser, anyway I think I'll hang onto em.Calipers will have new seals and so will the forks, still having trouble getting hold of a kit for the front master cylinder. All Lockheed stuff. When I bought this bike the owner told me it had a 1015 kit in it and when it was getting rebuilt the mechanic said MTC dont make rings for that kit anymore but he had a kit that would take it out to 1045 or 1055 I cant remember,so who knows? But I do know it has hollow cams, not sure what brand and a sump gate. There was suspicions at the time that the motor may have been in a speedway outfit. Thanks for you info Benz.

Love it.
I reckon stick with the black, but maybe add a single gold stripe with trace stripes for nostalgia.
That thing must a real thriller with all the ponies and not so many brakes or tyres.

Perhaps instead of gold you could alter it and go for a very dark metallic?

sickboy
11-10-2007, 12:24 AM
Cheers for that gunnie, and Weaselman when you say dark metalic do you mean keep the black as is and add dark metalic stripes and lettering?

Weaselman
11-10-2007, 09:58 AM
Yup...
But with the lettering keep it almost black its self so you can see it but it looks like its part of the paintwork instead of just a decal.
Kind of hard to explain without a picture but i hope you catch my meaning.
A very dark grey metallic, or if you wanted to go slightly 80's even a dark metallic purple

sickboy
11-10-2007, 10:26 AM
Thats not a bad idea, not sure about the purple though.

Hey M8 are you just cleaning these things up or are you getting them polished , chromed , nickled? what ever it is ,its all good from here , top looking set up coming me thinks;)

sickboy
19-10-2007, 06:22 PM
Its all the original nickel plate just polished up,I think some of the nickel had'nt seen the light of day in 30 years, Gix I know what you mean by the black snot, but the frame and swing arm was all done by hand with lashings of Autosol and shit loads of elbow grease.Just finished rebuilding the forks and polishing them up and about to put them in with new clip-ons,headlight and brackets.Still waiting on a brake caliper seal kit from the postie.

sickboy
10-02-2008, 12:22 PM
Well slack attack over I've fitted the rebuilt forks with new headlight and brakets and fitted new seals to the calipers, bit of a drama with some dodgy helicoils that hold the calipers on but all sorted now, even gave the wheels a bit of a polish. Not sure what to do with the disc centers, maybe polish and clear coat, someone suggested gold.

The guy that does my engine work is the mtc agent in Australia, and he specializes in z motors, has done for 30years, he can helpwith rings if need be. MTC used readily available rings on their early z kits, for example my z1000 1075 kit used honda goldwing rings so when I re-ringed last year they were easily sourced.
early z900 cams were hollow and popular for use as re-ground performance cams. These motors are very hard to kill. We bought one from a farmer that left it in the middle of a paddock under an old tarp for years and years, bit of petrol down the bores, oil change and carb clean out and she fired up and idled. so with yours I would give it some fresh fluids fire it up and see how it runs before digging in to deep( assuming the cam or ignition timing hasnt been messed with since it ran last) I have a 3/4 rickman fairing spare, and a few spare sets of 29 smoothbores, plus a heap of other bits and pieces, so give me a yell if you need anything, If I havnt got it, theres a good chance I will know were to get it.
Zedsled
P.S. I too, would be interested in those gauges

12-02-2008, 12:05 PM
Thanks zed, much appreciated,I hope to get the thing started in the next week or so,I'm just waiting on a mate to finnish of a bit of wiring ,I've got a brand new battery ready to go,theres still some Leaded petrol in the tank I'll have to ditch,I think I'll take the cam cover off and lube the cams up before starting and hopefully Kaboom, well maybe not kaboom but vroom vroom at least.

sickboy
13-02-2008, 02:33 PM
Ta Benz,I havnt fired her up yet, still working out a couple of wiring issues at the moment, mainly just tidying up a few cables here and there, next lot of days off I,ll drain the oil and fit a new oil filter etc.I;ve also dropped the discs of to a bloke who does powder coating from his backyard to get the centres done in silver chrome type finish, also waiting on a bloke to make up a couple of dome swing arm nuts, BSF stuff's a pain in the arse to get hold of and the local industrial suppliers want to sell me a minimum of 50-100 so they can get stuffed.Cheers.
