Whats the best model gixxer (1980s or 1990s) to use as a base for a streetfighter in regards to easiest to modify and also performance wise?

Without including the 7/11 mod, which model is best for:
- adapting USD forks
- modding the swingarm to accommodate 17 x 5.5 (or bigger) rims.
- body mods
- exhaust
- general parts interchangability with other models.
- aftermarket parts

I'd have to say the '90 L model mate. Always classed as the original Streetfighter base. Same as the '89 model except it already has the USD and is popular in the SF world for aftermarket bits (especially the German designed gear). Engine is the same as the Bandit basically so parts are still being produced for it also. It is a welded subframe though so you'll have to do some welding to get that new rear end on. The bolt on Subframes didn't start until the water cooled as far as I remember, and although Deano's pulled it off nicely, the oil cooled is the way to go for looks.

Hey Pop-see,

If you haven't already check out bikesales.com.au. There a few Gixer-elevens advertised at the moment at (what seems to me) pretty cheap prices.

the reason one builds one is that they HANDLE!88/750 has a wheelbase of 1405mm& can be made to track very well

Just the opposite mate. You'll do it twice as fast. A 7/11 is a GSXR750 bike with a GSXR1100 engine grafted into it. The shorter wheel base of the 750 and slightly smaller overall size give you a bike that handles faster, what's to paw the air more and do all those things Streetfighters are all about.

My Katana is a 7/11 - although I think the frames are the same between the 750/1100 except for the pop-up model which has a different frame.

whats wrong ladies, afraid of the water?? :P

i would get the one without USD, then put the whole front end off a late model gixxer on it so u get the better brakes etc

i keep seeing all these single sided arms off duc's on fighters
how hard is that to do??
if your re-doing the front anyways i would look for a wreck

Popcorn...

Your're right about the pop-ups. They have a square tube frame similar to the EFE and other Aircooled bikes. My 750 Pop-up has a 1100 (1052cc) squeezed in there.:) Plus my '90 GSXR is a 7/11 as well. So I think that's the best model naturally...[8D] Just before the Gixxer bloated in 1991 and worst of all got wet the next year (750WP).

Katana 750 & 1100 frames ARE different, the bottom engine mount is around 20 - 25 mm further back/forward than each other.
Both engines bolt up to both frames but you have to fabricate the bottom mounting plate. (easy 1 hr job)

so whats the differences between stock 1100 and stock 750s so far as riding, handling and power, use of rubber and petrol
should i go all out and get a big one?

just found out that i'm going to get over 60 grand when i turn 18 (8 months) because of a insurance payout.(mum was killed by a drink driver) so i can finaly seriously start to consider buying and building my dream bike.

Mate, do your apprenticeship on a 750 first up, they're (slightly) less likely to kill you when you've just come off a 250.
Then, when you need more grunt - which won't take long if you've got a pair - stick an 1100/1340/1500 in it & you'll have a REAL Streetfighter [8D]
I'm happy to do all the work for you for the once only, never to be repeated price of $59K (incl. GST)

Yea Pottsy. You really need to get a bit of experience first mate. The GSXR1100 adverts in the late '80s came out with a foot note that said "WARNING - For experienced riders only". They weren't joking mate....
If I were you and I had that sort of money to play with I would be rocketing into the future mate. Get a modern bike to do it too. They can make great Streetfighters also. The main advantage you have is nearly 2 decades of technology advancement. The bikes will handle faster, be lighter, be fuel injected, and brake on a 10 cent piece. These factors alone will save your life in a twitchy situation, which you will have mate, everyone does. Once you've had that experience then you could move back to the more crazy bikes of olden days! My 89 GSXR is a move back from the two bikes I had before it and you definitely appreciate what experience has taught you when you're riding it.
Just looking out for you mate - lost too many mates at your age to inexperience. Not trying to put you off at all but definitely head forward first then go back if you want the classic. I would say something like a ZX6R which can look pretty cheeky when stripped (Check http://www.streetfighters.com.au/kawa.asp) would be a great start. They will go just as hard as the older bikes. What do the rest of you guys recommend for our guy here?

most of us will be biased to suzuki
but if i had my time over again then it would be a 02/03 GSXR750/1000 - stripped
I dont think they look quite as good completely nude. unlike like the earlier gixxers that look great.

good luck with it all

Don't blow it all, mate. I'd go for any late 90's early 00's 600 or 750 (i met a guy at the island who'd fightered a vfr 750 (honda, iknow, but with a set of pipes, all the touring shit ripped off & a 600rr seat...). They're cheap- especially kwakas- and the newer it is, the easier the conversion is, all the things you update on an older bike (forks, brakes, engine etc.)you won't need to do.
Mine's an 88 750 frame(i'm with mundy) and an 87 1100 engine. O'course when i got a shitload of cash, i blew it on a 996 and an overseas trip. now i'm broke, but my gixxer looks great!

a 750L or a 750M would be my choice if i was going to 7/11 in the future. best lookin GSXRs made i reckon. however i would never not consider the 750G or the 750H if your looking for light weight. 750L/M has 17in wheels and usd forks and handles well but is heavy. 750G/H is very light lots of bits around for them going cheap but frame is a bit flexy skinny rubber and standard suspension is a bit iffy. both types of bikes would be a good choice i suppose it depends on which one you prefer. personaly id go the 750M and later put a 1127 or 1200 bandit engine in.

Hey Pottsy,

Don't forget the Mighty Hornet if you are lazy but still want a fighter look. Yeah I know, but err yuk - it's a honda.

All up cost should be below $10K to buy/customise. Std you're lookin at around 110 rear wheel horsepower and weight around 190kg.

Ignoring the ugly rack/touring bag I think it looks pretty cool for what it is - don't know about that guy in the background in the mumu though...
