Turbokat, the hugger started life looking like this, think it was made by pyramid(i thnk). Looked fu*&in dreadful when i put it on. It just covered too much of the wheel to be cool, so..........of for a crap and used that time to think out a redesign (was one of them time consuming craps) and did some cut and shutting until i had something i liked.
I must add that the extension below the swingarm really helps to keep the shitty Scottish weather of the shock and uni-trak.

Thats a pic of Inverary.
yes Greenock is only about 15-20 mins away down the motorway. I worked there for a few years. When you consider that it is winter, the weather has not been too bad last few days it's been 8-10 degrees cel; which is good for us. Although yesterday it rained all day and was windy.
Well ,as for Oban, it is a fantastic run on the bike, i usually go through the 'rest and be thankful' (just a road name) and head towards Inverary all the way round the coast and into Oban. Then it is up to Fort William and then back south passed Loch Lomond and back into Glasgow and the way home. Great run well over 200 miles, even better in summer [8D]

A castle on the east shore of Loch Fyne 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Inverary, Castle Lachlan was the home of the Maclachlan chiefs. It was built c.1790 near the site of a 15th-century tower which was abandoned in favour of the new house. The old castle had been attacked by a Government warship in 1746 followng the Maclachlan's support for the Jacobites, although it did little damage.
This is on the other side of Loch Fyne opposite Inverary. Another good run but the roads are small (little room for error [xx(])

Nah we have some pretty nice DRY coastal roads and Moutains here and some awesome country roads which lead into these strange towns, constantly, but the beer is always cold. Though if your touring around Aus then some highways are very boring and the roos like to play frogga with the traffic, Just dont ride at night and you'll be fine. Any plans on heading this way?

Well here is a pic of the 9r engine, i painted it this weekend. The true colour is a bit darker. The lighting in the shed is good but the pics were either too dark or too bright(with flash). but will edit them with photoshop .

Cam cover and cases to get done today but not decided on the colour for them. I blended the paint so it got darker towards the frame which is satin black. I'm sure it will look good with the kandy red bodywork [^]

yeah, i've heard some horror stories told about the 9r frames. the bike has been down HARD twice and the frame suffered only minor scratches(ok a couple were kinda deep and i lost the s/damper nipple on the other side) other than that the frame has survived well :)
It was well checked before i started the build [^].

I bought some new gaskets for the engine covers and a thermostat, all oe parts and came to a butt clentching £110.....$262 AUD, for little bits of paper and rubber!!!??? Fekkin ripaff Kwak ba$tard$:(

Well managed to get it in the frame today although i did drop a bracket and chipped the bottom of the frame :(. But a little touch up and nobody will know ;). It was kind of tricky lining up the mounts with only 2 hands. Now that i think about it i should have waited until i had prepared the forks/yoke and painted the rear shock. So now i have this lump in the middle of the shed and it's a c*nt to move, nevermind it looks good though :D.

cammy9r
29-01-2006, 08:02 PM
have been planning for a while to do it black with a silver marble then a couple of coats of kandy red. Was hoping to try to create a very light skin effect with the marble maybe snake /croc but nothing in yer face, failing that (or if it looks shite) i will just do the marble normally. I might put some gold highlighted areas under the marble along the more prominent edges.
Lets just say i know the colours i want to use but not decided on the overall effect :D

Kind of slow progress just now as I had some minor problems to solve.
First was the coolant expansion bottle. The OE one was bolted to the left hand side of the bike and was nicely hidden by the fairing. With out the fairing it looked like a big tumor growing on the side; so it had to go. I still needed an expansion bottle. So measuring the capacity I found that nominal volume was 450ml and over flow at 600ml.
There was a gap below the carbs just behind the fuel pump which would be big enough for something when the cables were re-routed. Of to the local car breakers (called scrappy's here). After some hunting I found a power steering reservoir from a RENUALT that was perfect for the task. Took it home and gave it a good clean to remove all oils. Blocked of one of the feed pipes and made a simple bracket to hold it in place and connected it to the coolant system. Works great and all I need to do is fit an over flow tube. :D
With the coolant system filled and no leaks I cranked the engine. Soon as fuel reached the carbs it started for the first time since the beginning of the build.
Now I could fully check the zx10r speedo clocks/gauges that I fitted. Every thing worked fine but the temp reading was not there [:0]. So I checked the temp gauge using the instructions from the zx10r manual; it was ok. The problem lay with the temp sensor - its resistance didn't match the gauge :(. With research I found the zx10r sensor was not the same as the zx9r (which is only 1 wire).
Some thinking then leads me back to the scrappy. There I took about 15 different sensors from various cars (sensors have colour coded bands and connections). They cost me £2 about 4 dollars AUS- bargain!

According to the zx10r manual i needed a sensor that would have a resistance of about 30-40 ohms at 100 deg cel. This would give the correct reading when the cooling fan kicked in. With the misses out for a while it was in to the kitchen and boil up some water in a pot and test the sensors one by one. The second last sensor i tested had a good enough reading so i cleaned it up and stuck on the bike. Got the engine hot and checked the reading on the gauge when the fan came on, between 100-102 deg cel. RESULT [8D]. Bought a test meter today that has a temp probe in it so will use it tomorrow and see how acurate the gauges/sensor really are during warm up.
Worst of all i can't remember which car i got the sensor from so if it ever goes faulty ?? will need to do it all again.
Well thats it for now.

Nice one Cammy. Using your head to sort problems that some people just say fuck it and leave (the expansion bottle). Cheers for sharing the solution, although finding a renault anything out here would be quite a challenge, but I'm sure there's an equivalent.

Thanks guys. The above link is to my msn space, just found out about it the other day. Plz check it out. I have posted loads of pics of the build as it has progressed. They can be viewed in a slide show if you click on the 'photos' tab.
I am still writing up some descriptions to go with the pics to let people know what it is i have done.
Still to do the calipers. Went to kawasaki to get seal kits for the calipers and they wanted just under £130 ($260 AUS) FOR RUBBER SEALS!!!!!!!!!! fook that. So been searching the net to find seals that are of reasonable price. In the end they will have to be done. I aslo still need front wheel bearings, mirrors, end can/link pipe new tyres and paint, it is getting there though.

Again, thanks for the kind words.
2 more things done for the bike this weekend.
1. Got micron beta race can s/s oval, brand new £80 delivered to door (ebay is wonderful[^])
2. Got brake seals and caliper paint £50 for seals £20 for Folia tec caliper lacquer (red).
So calipers cleaned , stripped and re-painted and now drying out/curing. Once cured i will pop in the seals and pistons.
There was lots of hard white crystaline stuff under the dust seals which would be the cause of the binding but what is it? Brake fluid? Salt? or just oxide from the alu?
Over all i suppose it's not bad for 30000 Scottish miles.
A few more pics of brakes added to my homepage slideshow thingy.

Nearly there. :D:D:D:D

Can is on and sounds sooooooooo good. Used an 'e' stamped rear cap i had on the back so it's sort of legal [:I]. Now i need to bend the link pipe to suit the angle of the tail section and re-shape my lower bracket i made. After that i will put some black base coat on the bodywork and see how it looks [8D].

Cammy. The multiple picture idea is something I might have to do when I get some time. For now, if you are pretty good with computers, post an image up so that the code appears in the message box, copy it and paste it into notepad, then add another image and do the same. You'll end up with the list of all the ones you uploaded in notepad, then just copy them all back into your message and you'll have them all in one post. Pain in the arse I know. But it works for now.

Here is a few pics of the exhaust bracket i made. It holds the link pipe very securely and the shorty can is held tightly by the clamp and springs. The bracket is bolted to the lower bolt of the rearset. It makes the rear look cleaner with no hanger or strap around the can.
In case you are wondering the design works very well and the setup has been speed tested to over 100mph, the bike also slid over 30 feet on the exhaust side in my last spill [B)] and it didn't come apart [^]

cammy9r
26-02-2006, 09:48 AM
I used alu flat bar 30mm wide 6 mm thick for the bracket and alu flat bar 50mm wide and 3mm thick for the clamp

I used some radio bracket ( a metal strip with a series of holes in it available at car audio retailers) to get the size and shape of the bracket going to the pipe. I spent some time doing this to get it right.

Then of to the vice and cut the alu to a rough length. then i used a blowtorch to heat the alu until it was soft enough to bend but there is a fine line between this and the alu just melting away. There is no real colour change in alloy unlike steal( gets red then orange). However just as it is at the right temp the alu will get shiny, this is the actual aluminium rising to the surface of the alloy. At this point I started to shape the bar taking the heat on and off until it looks like the shape of the radio bracket.
Once cooled naturally NOT quenched the holes were drilled and a longer bolt put in the lower footrest hanger, bracket then offered up and any adjustments made.

The clamp was easier to make. I put the bit of baffle i cut from the exhaust (57mm Dia) into the vice and clamped it dowm. Then I put the 50mm flatbar on it and heated the alu until i could shape it round the pipe, cooled and holes drilled.

All the edges were filed and surfaces sanded until smooth(ish. couple of deep marks I left.). Afterwards there was about a hour of polishing.
There we have it. [:p]

took bike to work today for a test run, engine ran a bit rough, hopefully it only needs a good run :(.
Bought some bar end mirrors today as well. Kinda look silly but work very well i thought.

But for now it just looks [}:)]

Got this speedohealer to sort out the zx10r / zx9r speedo calibration problem. It came with the box of tricks and a kawasaki loom to plug into the speed sensor but there are many other looms available. It also had a really good straight forward set of instructions. There is lots of info in the main website and will even generate instructions for your % error.
It cost me £55 ($110 Aussie D)

Here you can see it is quite small. The dip switches and button are used to set up the % fix. It is very easy to do. After set up and running you can use the push button to recall your top speed (so hide so the plod can't get to it :))

These are the plugs for connecting the SH to the factory wiring. The kwaks have 2 set ups so the pins are left out so you can set it up the way you need to, again the instructions are very clear on this.

The plugs set up and connected, very neat. The cable was run up to the rear seat unit.

This is the route for my bike wiring and i have put it into convoluted tubing to make it neat and tidy. I have drawn in the red line to show you the route

This is the brain, stuck up out the way from plod and water but easily accessable for set up and top speed recall (what are the chances of a local copper reading this ;)).

I used their online calculator to find the % diff and it was about -16.3%. Done using gear ratio diff and factory inaccuracy and tyre wear. It now reads pretty close but if i can get hold of a sat nav GPS for a 1/2 hour i can get a better reading.

Some pics of the kandy red I painted the bike last week. Started on last sunday and worked at it after work. Last of the clear coat went on friday night. Will need to let this clear cure before i flatten back and re clear coat. This will give me a good thickness of clear to wet sand and polish to mirror finish (also helps to get rid of the orange peel and dust ;) maybe do it at the start of july, will have some time of work then.)

More pics of the stages are on my web link slideshow thingy
