I picked this up about a week ago and i've done some work on it. First I stripped er down and hacked off some un needed subframe, then I filled and smothed the damaged tank and chopped up the front guard a bit. Then I modded a Z1 tailpiece to fit and gave the whole lot a coat of ansett 2k black. I also extended the lower legs of the rear shock by welding tabs on, which effectively raised the back of the bike by 60mm and gave some much needed clearance, and steepened up the head angle a bit.
I re shaped the seat a little and retrimmed it red (that was the only vinyl i had) but i'm gonna cut it down some more and trim it black, the red is a little garish for my taste! Got some lights from work and fitted them today. Chopaweeza is sending me some CBR wheels and then I'll do some polishing etc. and we'll be on the road.
Here's some pics:

Awesome work mate - You've brought the bike a long way in a short time. What are you next moves? Polished subframe and exhausts?

Not sold on your head lights tho... Can you mount them closer?

Alright if you cant, I may have a pair of Stu's austreefighter lights comming up cheap soon ;)

Ah yes, the old Z650 duck tail saves the day again. I like the way you painted the back of the subframe to make it disappear. Have you condisered doing the whole frame? Make it go towards the Ratt Bike look. I really like Ratt bikes that are tough and this one would work. I think some flat bars on there and you have the look sorted. Never thought the old GPZ6 would shape up so well!

Hardly looks like the same bike , nice job

you have completely transformed it and that tail looks shit hot, well done

Thanks for the encouraging words fellas. I think I will paint the wjole subframe black, and I'm tring to find a place to hide the ignitor and a smaller brake reserviour. It's funny you mentioned the lights, they look cooler in the flesh then the pics but i do want the closer to the forks, maybe flipping the bracket will be enough?

Top work Nick, you aren't mucking around. Keep it up.

I like the light streets mate but i'd move them closer as has been said
already,comming along well.

I flipped the lights so that they mount from the top, this moved them in about 25-30 mm. I also retrimmed the seat in black vinyl. I did a quit MS paintjob to see how the frame would look black, opinions?

id ditch mounting the lights off the forks and make a mount that comes off the headstock. you will have them closer and will look better.

Go the black frame.

shift1313
02-03-2007, 10:01 PM
id leave the frame silver, too much black will hide the lines of the bike. you do need some 17" rims with decent rubber on them though. I forgot to mention i liked what you did with the mudguard as well. and good job on the seat, much better in black:)

This brings back memories for me....was ridin an Xs650 with an 840 big bore when a mate offers me a ride on his 'latest weapon' (old git me) Open face lid + shades at night...Short shifting for power...check the tacho....10000000rpm redline.....Ok try again....... Faaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk !!!!!!!!

03-03-2007, 10:41 AM
xs650 with 840 kit? how many fillings did you have to re-seat after that mate?

sharky
03-03-2007, 11:03 AM
You'd be suprised mate. The 840 pistons were actually within the Yamaha weight tolerence for stock 650 ones. Pulled like a train off the line....Suprised a few blokes on the then 'Latest' weapons ie Zx10's.......just ran out of chuff once they caught up...like 100 yards down the road....[:o)]

sent you an email damo, you can take the lot, I'd trade for some parts of use or a little cash. I was planning to offer the same deal to the wreckers anyway. Looks like my seat etc. will be up for grabs now too; I was lucky at the superbikes over the weekend...

Bit of an update, I got an acewell 3853 computer for the bike, as well as a fireblade swinger and shock etc. on its way. Some fireblade wheels coming courtesy of damo now (the old cbr wheels were going to be too skinny) and also a yoshi Ti pipe which i'm in the middle of shortening.
If anyone has a fireblade rear spindle or cush drive i'd be interested.

Any opinions on colour for the rims?
I was thinking repsol orange or black/polished.

shift1313
20-03-2007, 12:10 PM
orange might look good with an all black bike, you keepin those forks with the antidive on em? :)

Looking good!

streets
20-03-2007, 12:37 PM
For the time being yeah, until I ride it a few times and decide what sort of forks to put on it.

20-03-2007, 01:07 PM
If you're looking to rebuild the anti-dive units Streets, the GPZ Zone in UK do a kit for it. They're the only ones that can supply them, the factory doesn't do a rebuild kit, replacement units only.
I'm still running the same front end on the 9, would be interested in seeing how your bike looks with the new wheels.

damo1
20-03-2007, 01:18 PM
Piss the anti dive shit off my missus bike has blank off plates
over the holes and the forks work fine with out it.

Im thinkn orang could be the go for the wheels??

Or maybe be black with orange rim stickers that would be a go option
i recon a mate has a FZ6 with wheels like that and it looks trick.

Whats that tail unit off????????

Oh by the way dont listen to Chalky hes stuck in the dark ages[:0]:D;)and hes having a mid life crisis arnt you mate;)

20-03-2007, 01:32 PM
Dark ages, fuggen young whipper snapper.[}:)] I'm stuck in the 80's, the greatest era of Japanese motorcycling. Also since Aussie men live to 87 years these days I'm not yet mid-life, got 6 moths to go [:I]

And yeah you want to tell us about your 'rim stickers' mate? the wife's name isn't Fred is it? :D

PS did you get proper blanking plates, or just some plates to blank off the anti-dive? if they're just plain plates then the front end won't be working properly as the damping mechanism routes through the anti-dive system. If they feel like they're ok then it's probably a case of worn-out oil, low levels, and shagged springs. (That's assumiong Fred(?) actually rides it like it's supposed to be ridden)

20-03-2007, 01:48 PM
Actually streets here some rim stickers I got in from UK last year. Cost 13 pounds delivered, and were in my mail box 5 days after I ordered them. They look a bit blurry due to the backing paper still being on them, they're actally quite sharp and bright without it. These ones are red, but many colors available.
The guys name is Jason Williams, and he has a shop on Ebay.

streets
20-03-2007, 03:27 PM
interesting. I like the stickers. The tail came off a factory 2006 ZX10 superbike
And yeah the anti dive has to go, the forks work ok though unless you get on the anchors hard!

20-03-2007, 03:32 PM
If you remove the anti-dive then you'll need to get stronger springs, or they'll dive badly under brakes. Progressive springs are about $150 a set.

damo1
20-03-2007, 03:41 PM
The anti dive shit has been removed totally Chalky and it has blank off plates
on the fork legs as for "dive badly under brakes" mate its a fuckn near 20yr old
bike and the missus(fred as you like to call her) is only 51kgs so im guessing that
your GPZ "dives under braking" to because last time i saw you old mate you werent looking
like 51kgs.HAHAHAHAHA

Mabe thats why you had your little woopsie an let me past at last years ASF ride ah.; )

20-03-2007, 04:03 PM
Nah that was the rear end playing up Damo, it knew you were behind me and kept puckering up :D. I've still got working antidive so I don't get too many front end problems.

And yeah I was more like 95-100 kgs back then. Plus the 9 is bigger and heavier than a 600r, but I'd imagine that Streets is potentially heavier than your wife, and maybe rides a bit harder too, no insult intended but that is generally the way of the world.

The information that I'm quoting (I've never seen the benefit of removing anti-dive so never have) is from sites like OSS and GPz900r.org where members have removed anti-dive. They also reckon that it gives the front end a wooden feeling.

damo1
20-03-2007, 05:56 PM
No insult taken you are right she just cruises around and im just enjoying the shit stir.

Im just getting in first because you told me your going back to being an arsehole thats all.

20-03-2007, 06:02 PM
C'est moi? an arsehole? [:0]

Too fuggen right mate [}:)] :D

and keep it up, wouldn't want this place to become boring now would we :D

Did a little bit today, the linkage is sorted and the swingarm is all done. Painted the wheels as well but the front rim turned out crap due to a faulty spray can (wrong colour and way too thin), oh well i'll just have to do it again.

shift1313
23-03-2007, 09:55 AM
that rim looks great.

a side note on the anti-dive. On my version gpz, when you block it off you need to run a bypass line between the two fork legs. also you can use a spacer shim at the top of the fork leg to "preload" the spring a bit. just blocking them wont work in anything ive seen

Ah streets i notice after looking back through the thread that your
going to run a 4into1 can?;)

In the early shots its got the orig twin system.
Did you reroute the system to join up under the bike or did you run a complete 4into1 set of headers.[?]

And if you did, did you retain the centre stand or ditch it?[?]

And if you took off the orig cans why wherent they in the box of gear i got off you??????your not using them are you????:(

Fucking hell mate! How can anyone make a GPZ600 look like that, or even have the bollox to try? You are on fire mate. Do you have the front wheel as well? Are you adding straight bars? Get it finished up as I know a magazine that would be interested in that one.

Hillsy
27-03-2007, 09:53 AM
Yeah - that's an amazing transformation! Needs a USD front to bring the whole lot into balance - maybe RGV with an NSR wheel to match the rear?? Unreal.

streets
27-03-2007, 10:01 AM
I'm drawing up some custom rotors ATM, the forks will stay purely for budget reasons (the bike has cost significantly less than 1k to date) but you can see the front fireblade wheel in the background of the 3rd pic.

I machined down the sprocket carrier today, took 6mm off it and my chain line is perfect, no need for an offset sprocket!
The front wheel is on now too, just waiting on my rotors to come back from the lasercutter and then off to the exhaust shop.

right streets spill the beans mate how much of a drama was it getting the blade arm in there?
And what did you have to do to get the front wheel in there?
Are you running Blade rotors?or are they the gpz ones re drilled?
:):)[^][^]:D:D;);)

its realy coming together mate im lovn the build of this thing awsome ;)

shift1313
31-03-2007, 01:49 PM
damo, somewhere in there he said he drew up custom rotors and is having them lasered out. dont see them in the pic yet. Hope you dont make them too specific as im sure they will be small to fit the stock caliper location.

streets
31-03-2007, 04:10 PM
i stuck with the 275mm standard diameter, the increase from that to say 300 wouldn't offer significant braking advantages, just extra unsprung weight. I think people get hung up on rotor diameter, you can still stand my bike on it's nose with two fingers on the standard brakes so I don't see a real reason to go bigger. The surface area would be wasted unless I was doing regular track time and pulling down from 250+ km/h necessatating that kind of heat dissapation.

shift1313
01-04-2007, 07:35 AM
while the gains might be minimal id hate to see you find another front end down the road where the caliper brackets were for a 300mm rotor or 320mm rotor.

streets
01-04-2007, 12:19 PM
The discs are costing me nothing, if i need different ones they'll be free too so I'm not too worried. The bike now has the chain and gaurds/guides on now.
Whats going on with your GPZ matt, that thing was pretty close last update?

damo1

02-04-2007, 08:49 AM
streets, its close, made the rearsets today, got my seat cover material and sorted a few more small problems, ill put some pics up today. still needs exhaust, and my homemade speedo/tach unit

streets
02-04-2007, 10:11 AM
damo,
I milled down the arm as far as I could on both sides, then took 3mm off the lh frame lug and 4.5mm off the rh one. I used the kawasaki shock and rocker with some dogbones I found at the wrecker and some different spacers/bearings. I still had to swap the wheel spacers from left to right to get the wheel spot-on centred.
The front wheel has the kawasaki bearings pressed in and some different seals. I made up some new axle spacers to get the wheel centred and the bearing spacing. With no speedo drive (other than a magnet) the wheel just bolted in.

streets
04-04-2007, 04:50 PM
The bike now has drive via an EK race chain. Wiring is finished and most of the bike is together. I made a little heel guard on the chain side and mounted the brake cylinder and chock valve.
I've decided not to use the yoshi shorty can (it cost me a 6 pack so if anyone wants it I'd swap for some beer or some mx bars) and I'm going to fit two 1.5" by 9" car resonators underneath the bike with some 3 inch downpipe tips, Buell style.
Things to do:
fit brake rotors when they arrive from lasercutter
fit brake pedal when it arrives from the same place
make seat pad and support
make undertray
fit chrome kawasaki decals when they arrive
little bit of finishing up on the subframe
weld mufflers on when they arrive

Oh yeah, damo, the rotors are getting cut by a mate who owed me a favour after I replaced the head gasket on his car for him.

one suggestion i would make would be to the rotors mate, you need to eliminate the sharp points, a they will become a heated spot, and cause cracking on the rotors, other then that, fucking awesome job mate, very well done.

cheers.joe.

streets
07-04-2007, 05:44 PM
i actually mentioned that but they were just the autocad sketches, auotocad (at least my version) refuses to fillet curves so I just sketch at home and do all the filleting and rendering on solidworks at work. So yeah, the sharp edges were never intended to stay.

Any ideas on the tail light set up your going to run on it[?]

Next up, what's the go with the z650 tail piece photoshopped above the lights?

It ain't photochopped Si - check out page 1.

streets
18-04-2007, 04:21 PM
yeah, no photochop on the front.
I have a little tiny led tail light im using, with some hotrod intdicators.
Damo, the colour is called ansett black but it sort of flips from black to a purpley pearly brown in certain lights. It's kinda weird but I had a whole 4 litres of the goo sitting here and it's tough and sprays a nice gloss so i figure what the hell, suits my budget of roughly $1.50.[:o)]

they look pretty cool!! only think is on the fronts it looks like your "spokes" have some hard edges on them. Do they or is it just the picture? also are the centers powdercoated?

Iceman, the rotors cost $0.
Matt, there aren't any edges with less than a 1.5mm radius, most are 2mm. The centres are just sprayed with 650 degree celsius flame proof paint.

I tested the braks out, sans mufflers (loud as!) and you cant feel any undulation in the lever, even at low speed. They grab really strong too. I finished my undertail as well, but when I swithch the indicators on they just light up and hold with all four lit up. It did this with only two hooked up and I figure it was a blown globe function in the flasher unit. With all the blinkers on it still does it though...?
My exhaust is done too, I ended up using some harley style baffles and a piece of welded up perforated core in each pipe to quieten it down. I'm picking he bike up tomorrow.
P.S. Sorry about the crap pics, I'll take some good ones when the bike is back at home.
